Three clubs ready to do “everything possible” to sign Mason Greenwood, €90m offer already made – report

Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has attracted interest from Saudi Arabia, as per reports.

On paper, the Olympique de Marseille star is enjoying a prolific campaign in the south of France.

After being pushed out of his boyhood club due to off-field issues, Greenwood has rediscovered his goalscoring touch in Ligue 1, having scored 16 goals and registered four assists in 28 league appearances.

However, the 23-year-old has still attracted negative headlines, owing to his tricky relationship with Roberto De Zerbi.

The ex-Brighton & Hove Albion boss has revealed his concerns over the Englishman’s work ethic and was even understood to have been involved in a heated exchange with his prolific forward in training. The situation has led to suggestions of an early exit.

Saudi Arabian clubs want Mason Greenwood

According to Fichajes, Greenwood is the subject of an offer in the region of €90 million from Saudi Arabia.

It is claimed that several Arab clubs are interested in signing him and are willing to “pay a considerable sum” to secure his services.

Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad, and Al-Nassr are all reportedly prepared to “do everything possible to sign him.”

However, the Spanish outlet suggest that Marseille are not too keen on parting ways with the player, who only joined them from United last summer in a deal worth over £26 million.

Any movement would alert United, as the Red Devils have a 50 per cent sell-on clause.

It is thought that the Premier League giants would “receive half of the sum, approximately €45 million” if he moves to the Gulf Kingdom.

Despite being left out of De Zerbi’s starting lineup before the March international break, Greenwood is reported to be happy with the Phocéens and intends to continue playing in Europe, further complicating Saudi’s pursuit.

United set to raid European league leaders after scouts tell Amorim 21-yo starlet has “immense potential” – report

Manchester United have reportedly “initiated a move” for Jonas Adjetey as the Ghanaian defender has “completely won over” the club’s recruitment team.

Adjetey, 21, plays for FC Basel and has emerged as a vital part of the Swiss side this season at the heart of defence. RotBlau are currently first in the Swiss Super League and have conceded the fewest goals in the division.

Adjetey is a centre-back by trade but retains the versatility to play in either fullback position – a flexibility likely to be attractive to Ruben Amorim and his coaching staff given the three-man defensive structure they employ.

Africa Foot (as relayed by Sports Witness) reveals United’s recruitment team have been blown away by the 21-year-old’s performances, considering him to be “one of Europe’s most promising defenders”.

The Red Devils have dispatched scouts to watch Adjetey on “several occasions” this season with their feedback to executives commending the defender’s “aerial ability, anticipation and immense potential.”

The report contends Adjetey has “completely won them over” and negotiations between FC Basel and their Mancunian counterparts are “currently underway”.

An exact transfer fee is not revealed by Africa Foot but Ligue 1 RC Lens are said to have “made an offer of €6 million for the defender last summer.” This approach was rebuffed by FC Basel, however, with the Swiss league leaders reportedly holding out for a “much higher amount”.

INEOS have initiated a shift in focus of recruitment since taking over the football operation at Old Trafford last year.

There is far greater emphasis on young talent, who can be signed for much cheaper fees on low wages.

The recent signing of 18-year-old centre-back Ayden Heaven – captured from Arsenal for around £1.5 million and who has already impressed Amorim since making his debut – demonstrates the utility of this approach.

And with the prospect of Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof both departing United when their contracts expire at the end of the season, a slot in Amorim’s defence may open up for another young defender to join the ranks.

If the scouts at Old Trafford get their way, that player will seemingly be Adjetey.

100% long balls, 3/4 ground duels won, 3 key passes: United loanee bounces back brilliantly after midweek nightmare

Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford delivered a far more encouraging performance as Aston Villa cruised to a 3-0 victory over Southampton on Saturday.

Rashford endured a tough outing in Villa’s 3-1 Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain, but Unai Emery kept faith in him, handing him a place in the starting lineup against Southampton.

Rashford led the line once more for Villa and was on the pitch for 66 minutes before he was taken off and replaced by Ollie Watkins.

Watkins scored the opener in the 73rd minute, directing a header in at the near post moments after he had won a penalty for Villa that Marco Asensio saw saved by Aaron Ramsdale.

Fellow substitute Donyell Malen doubled Villa’s lead six minutes later with a superb finish into the bottom corner. John McGinn – another substitute – secured the victory for the visitors as he won a second penalty, which Rasmdale again kept out, only for the Scotland midfielder to tap in on the rebound.

Although Rashford’s performance at St Mary’s marked an improvement from his showing in the French capital, he remained largely ineffective in front of goal – a contrast made clear by the immediate impact of Watkins.

The 27-year-old fired two shots, one of which was on target while the other didn’t require Ramsdale to swing into action.

He completed one of the dribbles he embarked on. Rashford touched the ball 33 times and successfully found his teammates with 15 of the 16 passes he attempted (94% pass accuracy).

Three of his passes were key passes.

Rashford connected with two of the six crosses he aimed and the one long ball he pinged. The Carrington academy graduate lost both aerial duels that he contested, although he came out on top in three of the four challenges he vied for on the ground.

He also put in one tackle.

(Stats obtained from Sofascore)

Villa have moved up to fifth in the Premier League and are now just one point behind Manchester City and three behind Nottingham Forest.

INEOS rejoice as European club enters “advanced negotiations” to sign Antony this summer – report

Real Betis have “advanced negotiations” with Manchester United to sign Antony permanently when the Brazilian winger’s loan deal comes to an end this summer.

Antony, 25, swapped Manchester for Seville to join the Liga side in the January window after falling down the pecking order at Old Trafford under Ruben Amorim.

It brought an end, if only temporarily, to a miserable time for the former Ajax man who failed to replicate the form for the Dutch giant which led the Red Devils to sign him in the first place.

But where Antony saw the Theatre of Dreams morph into the House of Nightmares, the Brazilian has found a sanctuary with Real Betis.

The winger has been of the best performers in Spain since arriving on loan, scoring four goals and providing four assists in 14 appearances for his adopted side. His general play has also been strong, continuing to demonstrate the excellent work-rate and defensive output which remained a positive during his time at Old Trafford.

Real Betis are keen for Antony’s stay at the Villamarin Stadium to extend beyond this season with chief executive Ramon Alarcon revealing the club is “cautiously optimistic” a new deal can be agreed.

United are willing to sanction a permanent exit for their winger with widespread acceptance at Old Trafford that the winger’s improved form in Spain is unlikely to be replicated within the more physically demanding Premier League.

However, the Red Devils would need to sell Antony for a minimum of around £32.3 million this summer in order to avoid incurring a negative FFP hit, due to the outstanding amount from his initial £80.75 million signing from Ajax three years ago.

United agreed an a deal worth £80.75 million with a further £4.25 million in add-ons. It’s undisclosed what was required for this additional instalment to be activated but, given it was likely performance based, Antony’s woeful form since arriving in Manchester is unlikely to have triggered it.

As such, with two years remaining on the Brazilian’s five-year deal, his remaining book value should be around the £32.3 million mark. If United were to sell this summer for a figure less than this fee, it would actually produce a negative effect on the club’s finances.

Whether Real Betis would be willing to agree a deal at this price point remains to be seen, though it feels unlikely given Los Verderones‘ usual transfer budget.

However, this has not deterred the Liga side with Spanish journalist Uriel Lugt revealing Betis have entered “advanced negotiations” with their English counterparts over a permanent move for Antony.

— Uriel Iugt (@urieliugt) April 12, 2025

Translated Tweet: “Real Betis has advanced negotiations to buy Antony. His loan from Manchester United ends at the end of the season and the Spanish club wants to acquire him permanently.”

While the nature of the deal Real Betis are exploring is not confirmed, a loan move with an obligation to buy clause could represent the best compromise for both teams.

It would enable United to avoid a negative FFP hit this summer while getting Antony’s salary off the wage bill for another season. And from next summer, the Reds would only have to sell the winger for £16.2 million to produce a positive financial boost – a far more palatable figure for Real Betis to match.

A loan fee could even be included to sweeten the deal from United’s perspective with the price for an obligation to buy reflecting this. A £5 million loan fee with a £20 million purchase clause, as an example, would represent fair market value for Antony while helping to balance the books at Old Trafford and the Villamarin Stadium in the complicated world of FFP.

Drop Dorgu, sell Onana, switch Bruno: the insane starting XI which will win United the Europa League – opinion

Bilbao or bust.

Manchester United’s last chance of salvaging success in an otherwise abysmal season for the club lies in the Europa League with the competition’s final set to take place at Athletic Club’s Estadio de San Mamés in Bilbao.

Victory in Spain would add another trophy to Old Trafford’s glittering cabinet but, more importantly, it would grant first-seed qualification into next season’s Champions League and the array of financial benefits Europe’s elite tournament provides.

United are braced for a comprehensive overhaul of Ruben Amorim’s first-team squad this summer as the club’s executive branch seeks to help the Portuguese coach mould his new team into his trademark 3-4-2-1 system.

At a minimum, reinforcements are needed in the number nine and ten positions with the Red Devils on track, by a considerable margin, to register their lowest scoring season in Premier League history. Neither of these roles will be cheap to provide upgrades in.

Additional recruits are also likely to be wanted by Amorim in central midfield and the wing-back positions, while the long-term injury to Lisandro Martinez may make another left-side centre-back an unexpected priority.

But with the club’s finances severely constrained by the acute pressure of Premier League’s profits and sustainability rules (PSR), United’s ability to provide the funds for this array of signings will be limited. This would be significantly altered by qualification for the Champions League next season, however.

The huge economic boost victory in Bilbao would provide off the pitch is almost, therefore, invaluable to the club’s fortunes on it next season.

The Road to the Final

Before the Europa League final can be considered, however, United must still progress through the quarter-final and semi-final stages.

The first-leg of the quarter-final took place on Thursday at the Groupama Stadium against Lyon. A tense match finished 2-2 with a last-minute equaliser for the French side, courtesy of an Andre Onana mistake.

Earlier in the game, the Cameroonian goalkeeper had made an even bigger howler to put Lyon 1-0 up, mirroring his dreadful performances in Europe last season.

United had clawed their way back into the game with subsitute Joshua Zirkzee scoring in the 88th minute to put the Reds 2-1 up, only for the inept hand of Onana to intervene at the death.

The reverse fixture will take place next week in Manchester with the teams on level terms. Should United emerge victorious at Old Trafford, it would set up a semi-final clash with either Athletic Club or Rangers, who drew their quarter-final first-leg 0-0 at Ibrox.

The other side of the draw contains Lazio and Bodo/Glimt – the Norwegian side being 2-0 up going into the second-leg – and Tottenham Hotspur and Eintracht Frankfurt, who also drew their first-leg.

Spurs feel the most likely side to make the final in Bilbao from this selection but the London club’s innate propensity for self-sabotage means nothing can be ruled out.

United should feel confident facing off against any of these sides in the final, however, if Amorim settles on his best starting eleven now that his squad is now (or soon to be) largely free of injury.

The Best XI to Win in Bilbao

Injuries have meant United’s head coach has largely been unable to rely on the full breadth of his dressing room since arriving from Sporting CP in November.

Injured Returnees:

Long-term absentees Mason Mount and Luke Shaw, who have now both returned, are likely to feature prominently in Amorim’s mind given their suitability to his system, having both previously thrived in a three-at-the-back system for Chelsea and England respectively.

Shaw would provide a significant improvement at left wing-back over Patrick Dorgu, who is still finding his feet since arriving from Lecce in January.

The 29-year-old defender’s body would undoubtedly be able to handle the rigours of the physically demanding position across an entire season but, given United’s sole focus is Europe with the Premier League campaign a write off, Shaw would only have to play four games at LWB to help his side to victory in Bilbao.

Similarly, Mount would offer a much better option in the attacking midfield position than the current options Amorim has been forced to rely upon, with the Englishman’s best season in a Chelsea shirt coming in the exact same system under Thomas Tuchel.

On the right-hand side, Ivorian winger Amad has been a rare bright spot for United fans with his potent pairing of industry and skill standing him in direct contrast to many of his teammates this season (looking at you Marcus).

But a serious ankle injury in early February had looked to have ruled Amad out for the remainder of the campaign after the 22-year-old required surgery for the issue. However, an unexpectedly fast recovery has put the winger on course for a return to action by the beginning of May – around the exact date of the first-leg of the Europa League semi-final.

Amad would offer a massive improvement to United at right wing-back where neither Diogo Dalot or Noussair Mazraoui have been able to provide the attacking threat of their younger teammate. With Shaw and Mount stationed on the left, and Amad backing up a player like Garnacho on the right, United’s attack would radically improve without sacrificing much defensive stability.

All three players, if they can stay/get fit, walk straight into United’s starting XI, given the obvious technical upgrades they offer. But Amorim must not simply rely on obvious decisions; the Portuguese coach will also have to employ a ruthless streak and remove certain players who are hindering the team, even if they are popular in the dressing room.

Dropping Underperforming Stars:

Onana single-handedly (with the help of his foot) snatched a draw from the jaws of victory against Lyon. It’s not the first time the erratic shot stopper has done this and it will not be the last. His goalkeeping fundamentals are poor and lend themselves to the type of mistakes he made on Thursday evening.

A sense of nervousness spreads through a defence like an infection when the unit cannot rely on the player behind them. Onana is patient zero for this defensive fragility and quarantine is the only antidote. Objectively, the 29-year-old should be sold in the summer, but the financial realities at Old Trafford make this difficult.

Sir Alex Ferguson once remarked about a goalkeeper when deciding whether to drop his underperforming number one, Jim Leighton, for a cup final: “When there’s doubt, there’s no doubt.”

There is serious doubt over Onana’s performances in goal meaning the legendary Scot would be in no doubt he needs to be replaced. Amorim must recognise this and opt for Turkish international Altay Bayindir in his stead.

Similarly, the performances of Rasmus Hojlund have reached such a painful nadir that his coach must simply remove him from the firing line, for his own good as well as the team. The 22-year-old Dane’s profile as a striker is closer to what Amorim wants up front than teammate Joshua Zirkzee – a direct number nine who looks to constantly get in behind the defence – but the Dutch international has to start in place of Hojlund.

Zirkzee’s strengths lend themself more to a number ten than a number nine, as recognised by Amorim earlier in the season, but the 23-year-old still offers a dramatic improvement over Hojlund in terms of link-up play and presence up front. The effect on United’s performance against Lyon when the two strikers swapped in the second-half was stark.

Amorim must compromise on his ideal profile of striker to reach the final in Bilbao in order to secure the financial means to then target that new forward in the summer. Zirkzee is the only means to achieve this, not Hojlund.

Elsewhere, the only other alteration the Portuguese coach must make is to revert to deploying Bruno Fernandes as a central midfielder, with Mount taking his place in the front three.

United’s captain has been talismanic since Amorim arrived at Old Trafford but he is best positioned at the heart of the 3-4-2-1 system, rather than further forward where his lack of speed and agility hinders his performances, and the team suffers without his progressive abilities from deep.

This would mean dropping either Casemiro or Manuel Ugarte – the starting pivot against Lyon – despite the improved performances of the former Real Madrid man in recent months.

Ugarte, 23, offers a much higher level of work-rate and physicality than his Brazilian elder, despite being more limited on the ball. But the inclusion of Fernandes in the midfield would balance this out and enable Ugarte to solely focus on the defensive side, harassing the opposition midfield like a heat-seeking missile for the ball.

In conclusion, the combination of welcoming back injured players and dropping underperforming ones, means United’s best starting eleven – the one most likely to win the Europa League – is as followed:

Bayindir

Mazraoui     De Ligt      Yoro

Amad       Ugarte      Fernandes       Shaw

Garnacho         Mount

 Zirkzee

With Amad still a few weeks away from a return to the first-team, Diogo Dalot can take the Ivorian’s place at RWB on Thursday in the second-leg against Lyon.

But should United emerge victorious from the quarter-final decider, this starting eleven must be the one Amorim aims for in the semi-final first-leg on May 1. The path to Bilbao, and Champions League football, relies upon it.

United Women basked in the Carrington sunshine ahead of our huge FA Cup semi-final clash with Manchester City.

17 year old super-starlet makes his long awaited return in big win for u18s

Manchester United u18s travelled to the Nottingham Forest training ground for a lunch time kick-off on Saturday.

Coming off the back of an extraordinary 13-1 win over Leeds United last week, Adam Lawrence’s side would have had a lot to live up to match the standards.

In fact, the opening 45 minutes were the complete opposite this time out, with little threat on either goal.

United controlled much of the possession in the first half but a late header from Victor Musa was the only time Nottingham Forest keeper Alastair Graham was called into question.

Lawrence fired the young Reds up at half time though as they came out firing in the second half.

Early attempts fell for Zach Baumann and Musa, the latter of which forced another save from Graham.

The deadlock was eventually broken in the 61st minute when Amir Ibragimov slotted his effort into the bottom left corner from inside the area.

The floodgates then opened as James Overy doubled the lead shortly after, finding the same corner as Ibragimov, to score his first goal the club after signing in the summer.

Perhaps the most exciting part of the match wasn’t a goal, but rather the return of Shea Lacey who came off the bench for the final 16 minutes.

Considered one of the top talents at the club, Lacey has been limited to just two starts so far this season and today featured for the first time since February.

The silky trickster put his skills to use right away to seal the win by setting up James Bailey in stoppage time to make it 0-3.

It was also a special occasion for u16s Noah Ajayi, who also came off the bench to make his u18s debut less than 24 hours after also making his u21s debut on Friday night.

The win leaves United in second place, trailing rivals Manchester City by two points with four matches remaining.

Next up for the young Reds is a home tie with the tricky Derby County, who are currently in fourth place.

United to play 4,000th game in top flight

Saturday 12 April 2025 15:00

Manchester United will play our 4,000th men’s top-flight fixture on Sunday, when we take on Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.

As the record 20-time English champions, we become only the fifth club to reach this landmark in the history of English football—joining Everton, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Aston Villa.

Fittingly, our opponents are one of our most familiar foes, with this set to be our 156th top-flight encounter. The first was almost exactly 130 years ago, when United were 5-1 winners at our old Bank Street ground.

Here’s everything you need to know about this historic 4,000-game milestone…

St James’ Park has been one of our most visited grounds in our 3999 games to date.

THE VERY FIRST

Our very first game in England’s top tier was on 3 September 1892, a full decade before the club was named Manchester United.

At that stage, we were still known as Newton Heath, the team having been formed by railway workers at the Newton Heath Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Company.

The Football League was founded in 1888, but while Newton Heath — nicknamed the ‘Heathens’, ‘Railwaymen’ or ‘Coachbuilders’ — were a very strong side on the Manchester football scene, we weren’t one of the 12 best across the nation. So, it was four years later when the league was expanded that the Heathens proved themselves good enough to join.

Our first test came against Blackburn Rovers, one of the most successful teams of the era, who had already won the FA Cup — then the most significant trophy — on five occasions when we faced off. The Rovers were 4-3 winners on our first trip there.

REGULAR RIVALS

Blackburn, however, are not one of our most-faced opponents. We’ve played 14 teams on 100 occasions or more, and the Reds have come up against Arsenal and Everton on 192 occasions. Liverpool are next on 180, followed by Aston Villa (173), Tottenham Hotspur (168), Chelsea (161), Manchester City (160), Newcastle United (155), Sunderland (126), West Ham (125), West Brom (118), Bolton Wanderers (106), with both Sheffield Wednesday and Leicester City on exactly a century.

‘Dear Bruno Fernandes…’ Video

‘Dear Bruno Fernandes…’

A young boy from Belfast wrote a letter to Bruno Fernandes. What happened next will bring a tear to your eye…

OUR FAVOURITE OPPONENTS

Sunday’s visitors are up there. We’ve beaten Newcastle 76 times in English top-flight fixtures, out of our 155 meetings. We’ve only beaten four teams more regularly. They are Aston Villa (89), Everton (86), Tottenham Hotspur (84) and Arsenal (77).

HOW MANY SEASONS?

Well, that’s something of a landmark, too. This is our 100th season in England’s highest division and our 50th consecutively, having immediately bounced back from our shock relegation in 1973/74 to return in the 1975/76 season.

Our recent draw with Arsenal was our 192nd top-flight meeting with the Gunners, making them our joint-most regular opponents, alongside Everton.

OUR LANDMARK GAMES

The first was in September 1892, but what about the other milestones along the way to 4,000?

500th: 12 November 1921 — Middlesbrough 2 UNITED 0
1,000th: 1 October 1949 — UNITED 1 Sunderland 3
2,000th: 29 August 1973 — UNITED 1 Stoke City
2,500th: 19 April 1986 — Tottenham 0 UNITED 0
3,000th: 29 December 1998 — Chelsea 0 UNITED 0
4,000th:
13 April 2025 — Newcastle ?? UNITED ??

Between each landmark, a huge amount of special United history unfolded. From a middling side in 1892, we faced financial strife, reformation and then our first era of golden success — two league titles and an FA Cup — before a global war forced a pause to the professional game, all before our 500th game in 1921!

The gap between our 1000th and 2000th game encompasses nearly the entirety of the Sir Matt Busby era, defined by tragedy and triumph, while the jump from 2500 to 3000 is roughly the time it took Sir Alex Ferguson to transform United from under-performers into soon-to-be Treble winners.

So, what special memories will this club create for us before game 5000 comes around?

U18s: Forest 0 United 3

0

Skip to Main NavigationSkip to content

Saturday 12 April 2025 14:24

Manchester United’s strong end-of-season form in the U18 Premier League North continued with an away victory over Nottingham Forest.

Full-back James Overy scored his first goal at this level after Amir Ibragimov’s 61st-minute strike had handed United a crucial lead. Substitute James Bailey then netted in a second consecutive game to extend the advantage in added time.

James Overy netted his first United goal at Forest.

Three points maintains positive momentum for Adam Lawrence’s young Reds, who have responded excellently to FA Youth Cup semi-final defeat a fortnight ago and are hot on the tails of rivals Manchester City in the title race.

City now lead by two points, with the teams level on games played and United ahead by one on goal difference, meaning we require results elsewhere to go our way if we’re to taste ultimate success, as we did last season.

Either way, the experience of being in another title race will be a highly valuable one for our young players.

“It was a good, tough win,” reflected lead coach Adam Lawrence.

“In the first half, we had a lot of possession and a lot of territory and we got better as we went on in terms of creating chances, but we knew we needed to do more in the second half. Forest were 5-4-1 out of possession, narrow, compact, in a low block and trying to play on the counter, so for us it was about showing the right patience on the ball but penetrating at the right moments and finding that balance between the two.”

United came close on a couple of occasions, with Forest’s goalkeeper Ally Graham coming up equal to a strong Victor Musa header and a well-worked pull-back from Sam Lusale evading his team-mates.

After the break, the Reds kicked into gear, although were thankful for an excellent one-on-one save from Will Murdock to keep the scores level.

United steadily built pressure, showing good patience in our play, to tire Forest out and force gaps to open up.

“After half-time, the goal was coming,” said Lawrence.

“We put more pressure on their defensive line, managed to get them squeezed right down, got more extreme in the second half, forcing them to camp in on the edge of the box. Then we just had to find a way in.”

The route in required intensity, focus and a bit of a gamble. After a clever ball towards Zach Baumann was headed clear, Amir Ibragimov pounced on the edge of the box, got contact on the shot and watched it deflect away from Graham and into the Forest net.

If the opener required some fortune — even if it came from good reactions and intent — United’s next goals were of real quality.

Overy’s was a fine finish, as he shifted the ball onto his left foot inside the box and bent it into the far left corner.

In added time, Musa fed substitute Shea Lacey in neatly and the winger capped off a smart run with a well-weighted pull-back for the on-running Bailey. Having scored with a thunderous effort against Leeds last week, Bailey this time offered accuracy, tucking it in just inside the post with his right boot.

“Those are two really good goals,” enthused Lawrence.

“They are really good individual finishes. But this wasn’t about individual performances. The biggest thing we were pleased with was the lack of panic in the team. We kept probing, didn’t get frustrated, moved it well, believed in our style, kept playing properly and eventually found a way in. It’s a good lesson for the boys, to have that patience and then manage the game well. A team job, well done.

“The bigger picture stuff is that we’ve improved our goal difference again, there are four games to go, City are two points ahead and we are where we need to be. We’ll take each game as it comes. We’ve got a really tough opponent on Friday in Derby, so we’ll start preparing and be ready for that.”

Man Utd ‘step up’ interest in £40m Onana replacement as Serie A star added to five-man shortlist

Manchester United have reportedly ‘stepped up their scouting’ of Serie A star Zion Suzuki as their five-man shortlist to replace Andre Onana becomes six.

Onana cost United in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday, with the Cameroon international certainly at fault for the first and arguably the second as the game finished 2-2 in Lyon.

READ MORE: Onana blunders cost ‘progressing’ Man Utd as Zirkzee highlights second star in ‘worst in history’ running

They were poorly timed clangers after Nemanja Matic claimed Onana was “the worst goalkeeper in Manchester United history” in response to the Red Devils stopper’s claim that his side are “way better” than their Ligue 1 opponents.

Ruben Amorim, who was appointed United manager in November, insisted after the game that he retains confidence in his No.1

He said: “If you look at the season I’ve made more mistakes than them during these last games and during these last months.

“There’s nothing I can say to Andre in this moment that will help him, so the most important thing is to be natural and then when the time comes I will choose the best XI to play. But I’m really confident in Andre.”

Despite that vote of confidence, the Daily Mail reported that the Portuguese boss is ‘considering taking Onana out of the firing line for Manchester United’s trip to Newcastle on Sunday with Altay Bayindir on stand-by to play at St James’ Park’.

The report adds that ‘Amorim is set to make a number of changes for the visit to Tyneside and could play his No. 2 keeper Bayindir in goal’.

It’s claimed the United bosses are now scouring the market for a new No.1 goalkeeper and while reports suggesting they could make a shock bid to re-sign David de Gea have since been dismissed, it’s been claimed a five-man shortlist including Burnley’s James Trafford and Leicester’s Mads Hermansen has been drawn up by the club.

And now talkSPORT claim Suzuki is also being looked at as a possible future No.1 at Old Trafford, with the report claiming United have ‘stepped up their scouting’ of the Parma goalkeeper, who’s valued by the Serie A club at £40m.

United were strongly linked with the Japanese stopper in 2023 when he moved on loan to Belgian side Sint-Truiden from Urawa Red Diamonds and have reigned that interest following his £6.5m move to Parma in the summer.

The 22-year-old has kept five clean sheets in 30 Serie A appearances this term and is yet to make a single error leading to a goal in the league, while Onana has made three in the Premier League this term and eight in all competitions since the start of last season, the most of any keeper playing for a Premier League club.
