Harry Amass starts for United today as Amorim makes big shake-up of his starting XI – report

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is reportedly set to hand youngster Harry Amass his first Premier League start later this afternoon against Newcastle.

Amass only made his senior United debut last month when he came on as a substitute in the 3-0 win over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

He was introduced after 69 minutes on what was his 18th birthday, and more than held his own on the pitch as he slotted into the left-wing-back position.

In doing so, the teenager became United’s 253rd graduate to line up for the first team.

Amass joined United from Watford’s academy in June 2023 and has predominantly lined up for the U18s and U21s.

Under Erik ten Hag, Amass regularly trained with the first team and even featured prominently during he club’s pre-season tour in the United States.

However, Ten Hag bizarrely kept him waiting for first-team opportunities once the season started.

It appears Amass has impressed Amorim in training, with the Daily Mail revealing that the England youth international will make his first Premier League start for United’s trip to Newcastle today.

Amass is poised to start in defence in what will be his full top-flight debut.

Ahead of the meeting, Amorim suggested he might rotate his squad, with one eye on the upcoming Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon on Thursday.

It has already been noted that Andre Onana, who made two huge mistakes at the Groupama Stadium to cost his side a victory, will not be part of the matchday squad to face Newcastle.

There have also been rumours that skipper Bruno Fernandes could be given a rest.

Newcastle vs. United kicks off at 16:30 BST.

Skinner ‘proud’ of Toone and Clinton

Marc Skinner says he couldn’t be more proud of the developing relationship between Ella Toone and Grace Clinton.

The United pair, who both featured for England in their recent internationals, are starting to fine tune their performances at the heart of our midfield.

With Grace having returned from a fruitful loan spell with Tottenham Hotspur, her place in midfield has been well justified over the course of the season.

Toone, who has often been deployed a little further forward, played large parts of the Lionesses recent 5-0 win over Belgium.

Whilst it remains to be seen how Marc sets up his side in Sunday’s huge Adobe Women’s FA Cup semi-final clash with City, his pride for both Ella and Grace remains the same.

“I obviously love it when they kind of have that relationship and and you feel proud,” responded Skinner when asked about the United duo.

“I’m sure Manchester United fans feel proud when you see your players playing alongside each other in the national team, which creates that kind of chemistry.

“[It then] continues when they’re not with us on international duty. So yeah, it’s obviously an honour and I’m sure they feel the same.

“I felt that two new ones coming to the second game had a real massive impact. I felt that they were very good at what they do within the first game as well.

“So obviously Grace, before she come off, it’s a difficult game because I think they got hit by three counterattacks and [through] set pieces.

“So it was that part of the game as to why they lost it. But actually I thought they they gave a really good account of ourselves as they always do.

“And when they come in this morning, I’m really looking forward to seeing them because when they all come back in on that day one, the energy is fantastic.”

The Reds are bidding to book a third-successive FA Cup final visit this weekend, and with a sold-out allocation set to back United, we can’t wait.

A reminder the game will not be shown live on MUTV on Sunday, but you can listen to live radio commentary on ManUtd.com.

Cesc Fabregas warns Manchester United over £35m transfer move for Liverpool-linked wonderkid

Como manager Cesc Fabregas has insisted that prising 19-year-old prospect Assane Diao away from the Serie A club may not be as straightforward as they like.

Winger Diao has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for some time now after making a big impression since his January move from Real Betis, with Liverpool and Newcastle also claimed to be interested in the Senegal international.

The teenager has racked up six goals and an assist in just 13 games for his new club, prompting a round of speculation last month that led Como president Mirwan Suwarso to explain that selling players on for a quick profit is not part of the club’s business plan.

Instead, the newly-promoted side – currently 13th in Serie A – are more focused on getting their recent signings to keep pushing them up the table as they aim to become a force in Italian football under the ownership of Indonesian tobacco giants Djarum.

Suwarso said then: “Maybe in three or four years, because it would be naive to say that player sales aren’t part of the business. And we’re not short on money – we are well-backed.”

Fabregas has now moved to echo that sentiment, intriguingly namechecking United in the process – though of course it’s entirely possible that he was simply responding directly to the rumours connecting Diao with the Red Devils to make his point.

The former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder responded to questions about Diao’s future to SportItalia, as relayed by Sport Witness: “There is no mentality of speculating and selling, [players] come here to grow and improve the team.

“Then obviously, Manchester [United] can come and ask for Diao by offering €40m (£34.7m), but it is not a given that he will leave.

“The objective is to create a path, with players who are functional to the characteristics, working with them. Obviously the value increases, but the important thing is that they are the right players for us.”

Chelsea told they are losing battle to sign PL star with Man Utd ‘nailed on’ to complete transfer

Troy Deeney reckons Chelsea are losing their battle to sign Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap in the summer amid interest from Man Utd.

Delap left Man City in the summer transfer window and signed for the Tractor Boys in a deal worth around £20m.

The 22-year-old has hit the ground running in the Premier League with 12 goals and two assists in 30 appearances, while the centre-forward is now attracting interest from a number of English clubs.

A report earlier this month insisted that Chelsea are ‘firm favourites’ to land Delap from Ipswich, who are very likely to be relegated, in the summer transfer window.

It was claimed that Delap has ‘held talks’ with ‘nearly half of the Premier League’ this year as he’s likely to have his pick of clubs ahead of the summer.

But former Watford striker Deeney reckons it’s “nailed on” that the England Under-21 international will swap Ipswich for Man Utd in the summer.

Deeney said on talkSPORT: “He has to play [to get into England squad] right?

“So his next step, if I was advising him, would be to go where you would play.

“Man United, it’s nailed on. If he went to Man United, he’d start every week. He’d instantly make them better.”

When asked about Delap’s progression this season, Deeney added: “He can be whatever he wants – he has everything. I think, at the moment, my biggest concern is his temperament, he gets caught up in trying to prove his physicality.

“I remember watching him up against Everton earlier on in the season and (James) Tarkowski gave him a little bit and the rest of the game he was out of it because he just wanted to give it back. That’s a bit of immaturity but that will change as he grows.”

Man Utd are desperate to sign a new striker in the summer after both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have flopped in the Premier League this term.

Delap said last month that he is trying to ignore the “noise” surrounding his future as he looks to finish the season on a high.

The Ipswich striker said: “I’m so happy here, I’m enjoying it so much here. I just look forward to playing football. I take every game as it comes and focus on the next.

“It [media speculation] is something that I try and stay away from. People around me have told me to stay away from it, it’s something that I’m very good at in focusing on what I want to do. That’s playing football here.

“I’m really enjoying my time here and I enjoy playing every week. That’s the most important thing. We know, as players and people, that there is noise. If we have a bad game and people are slating us for not performing or getting the right results, we stay focused on ourselves and what we have to achieve.”

Andre Onana dropped from United squad to face Newcastle – David Ornstein

Andre Onana has been left out of the Manchester United who travel to Tyneside to face an in-form Newcastle side today.

The news was confirmed by The Athletic’s David Ornstein this morning.

Writing in The Athletic, the tier one journalist stated that:

“Onana has played every minute of United’s 69 Premier League matches since joining from Inter in the summer of 2023, but will be rested by head coach Ruben Amorim for the trip to St. James’ Park.

“The 29-year-old was at fault for both of Lyon’s goals in Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final first leg in France, which United drew 2-2.”

— David Ornstein (@David_Ornstein) April 13, 2025

It is a strong move by head coach Ruben Amorim, who is putting his faith in reserve ‘keeper Altay Bayindir, who will make his Premier League debut for the club.

Bayindir has played seven cup games for the Red Devils, including a man-of-the-match outing against Arsenal in the FA Cup. He subsequently got injured, which may have cost him the opportunity to stake a claim earlier.

Ornstein says that “Onana is likely to return to selection for Thursday’s return leg against Lyon at Old Trafford.”

When asked about the Cameroonian’s display after the Lyon match, Amorim said:

“That can happen with any player. We all try to help. There’s nothing I can say to Andre in this moment that will help him.

“The most important thing is to be natural and when the time comes, I will choose the best XI to play but I’m really confident in Andre.”

The issue is that these costly mistakes were not the first made by the keeper, who arrived at Old Trafford with the reputation of being one of the world’s best and with a Ballon d’Or nomination from his time at Inter Milan.

Among the catalogue of errors he has committed since joining United, last season’s Champions League performances stand out as being among the worst.

The vast majority of United fans will almost certainly back Amorim’s call and all eyes are now on Bayindir. If the Turkish giant puts in a good performance against Newcastle today, he will almost certainly keep his place for Thursday’s showdown. However, if he too shows frailty, then Amorim will have a big decision to make that could define United’s entire season.

Man Utd ‘step up interest’ in £40m star after Amorim drops Onana for Newcastle clash

Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim has dropped Andre Onana for their Premier League clash against Newcastle on Sunday, according to reports.

ESPN broke the news on Sunday morning that the Cameroon international will be dropped by Amorim after he came in for heavy criticism of his performance against Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final in midweek.

The report claims:

‘Onana did not travel to Tyneside with Ruben Amorim’s squad on Saturday and is set to be replaced at St James’ Park by No.2 Altay Bayindir.

‘A source close to Onana has told ESPN that the decision has been taken to allow Onana to “rest and disconnect.”

‘The 29-year-old, according to the source, has been assured that he has not been permanently replaced as Amorim’s first-choice goalkeeper and that he could return to the team for the Europa League quarterfinal second leg against Lyon at Old Trafford on Thursday.’

It comes after Onana became embroiled in a war of words with former Man Utd midfielder Nemanja Matic, who labelled him “one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history”.

Responding to claims from Onana that Man Utd were “way better” than Thursday’s opponents Lyon, Matic said: “You know, I respect everyone but to say that then you need to give the answer.

“If you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history, you need to take care what you’re talking about.

“If it was [Edwin] Van der Sar, [Peter] Schmeichel or [David] De Gea saying that, then I would question myself. But you need to have cover to say something like that.”

Former Ajax and Inter Milan goalkeeper Onana hit back on social media by denying he was being “disrespectful” and aiming a dig at Matic.

The Man Utd goalkeeper wrote: “I would never be disrespectful to another club. We know that tomorrow will be a difficult game against a strong opponent.

“We focus on preparing a performance to make our fans proud. At least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can’t say the same.”

Former Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon was very critical of Onana after his performance “cost” Man Utd against Lyon.

Lennon said on BBC Radio 5 Live: “He was in the headlines before the game and now he is going to be all over the headlines again.

“You’re fuming [if you’re Onana’s team-mate]. They’re two massive mistakes. He has got to save both of them in my opinion and he has cost United today.”

And now talkSPORT claim that Man Utd are now looking to sign Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki in the summer, the report claims: ‘talkSPORT understands United have stepped up their scouting of Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, who is rated at around £40m.’

3-4-3: Onana, Hojlund, Garnacho dropped, Chido Obi to feature as Amorim mixes things up for United’s trip to Newcastle – predicted XI

Manchester United travel to Tyneside to face an in-form Newcastle side today hoping to get a morale-boosting victory ahead of their crucial Europa League quarter final second leg tie against Lyon on Thursday.

Head coach Ruben Amorim has said he will rest players who need to recuperate so we expect to see a few changes from the side that drew 2-2 at the Groupama Stadium three days ago.

We expect one of those rested to be goalkeeper Andre Onana, who was responsible for both Lyon goals and who has been suffering an extended run of bad form.

Various reports have claimed that United’s coaching staff have had enough of the unpredictable Cameroonian and that his deputy, Altay Bayindir, will be given a chance against the Magpies.

With Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez, Jonny Evans and Ayden Heaven all still injured, the back three is likely to remain unchanged, with Harry Maguire flanked by Noussair Mazraoui and Leny Yoro.

Victor Lindelof and Godwill Kukonki are available should Amorim wish to rest any of those three.

Diogo Dalot and Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu will probably also keep their places as wing backs. Luke Shaw might finally start his comeback with some game time if one of those two is rested for the final 30 minutes.

Harry Amass is another option.

Although all eyes are on the Europa League because of its potential to provide an entry route into next season’s Champions League, Amorim knows that every position United can climb in the Premier League will provide more prize money and therefore a bigger transfer kitty for the summer.

He will therefore want to win this game and surely must be looking to bench the ineffective Rasmus Hojlund, regardless of who is set to start on Thursday.

Amorim is a huge admirer of Mason Mount and we have been predicting he will start in the last two games. Third time lucky?

Meanwhile Casemiro has played two straight games in four days and will surely need to put his feet up. Alejandro Garnacho has also had a lot of football in the last couple of weeks.

Putting all this together, we think Bruno Fernandes will partner Manuel Ugarte in midfield, with Christian Eriksen, Josh Zirkzee and Mount up front.

Kobbie Mainoo is another option in midfield, if needed. Toby Collyer and Amad remain absent through injury.

Finally, Chido Obi’s omission from the Under 21s squad on Friday suggests he will be taking part in this one, potentially even coming on ahead of Hojlund, as Amorim takes another look to see if the younger of the two Danes is ready to lead the line.

With all that said, here is our predicted line-up for today’s 4.30pm kick-off:

From Italy: Serie A giants planning loan offensive for United’s €74m star, INEOS are open to it

Rasmus Hojlund’s second season stats at Manchester United make for grim reading with the 22-year-old managing only three Premier League goals all season.

Only two of them have come under Ruben Amorim who has been far from impressed with the Dane, who endured another miserable night on Thursday against Olympique Lyonnais.

Apart from the lack of goals, the 22-year-old’s overall gameplay has also left a lot to be desired with the former Atalanta ace always more eager to back into defenders that use his smarts to deal with pressure from defenders.

While the Denmark international is still young, the head coach does not have the luxury of time and he wants to move him on and replace him with a ruthless goalscorer in the summer.

Rasmus out

However, INEOS are aware that not too many teams will pay the initial fee of £64 million the Red Devils had splurged on Hojlund in 2023 given his woeful form, and are hence open to the idea of a loan exit.

Juventus and Napoli are among the teams interested in the out-of-form striker with TuttoSport claiming that the Turin-based club are ready to move ahead with a loan offer.

The Bianconeri are eyeing a loan deal with an option to make the move permanent but the deal has to be done before the Club World Cup which begins in two months time.

“Rasmus Hojlund needs to be revitalized. But it would also be a low-cost deal for this reason, with Juve sniffing out the possibility of a loan, perhaps at a cost, with a view to purchasing in the future.

Juventus eyeing him on loan

“Nothing has been agreed at the moment. However, there have been exploratory contacts from the Juventus management towards the player’s entourage.

“The English club’s idea for next season is to seriously restructure the forward department and they would prefer to say goodbye to the Dane, also for the prospect of a better deal.

“From Juventus’ perspective the prospect of having him right away for the Club World Cup is quite tempting, since he would numerically replace Milik, destined for an early separation.”

The Peoples Person had written about the 20-time English league champions slapping a €60 million price tag on Hojlund’s head and it will be intriguing to see how this saga unfolds.

Christian Eriksen tells Rasmus Hojlund exactly what he must do as he aims to “score 100 goals tomorrow”

Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen has attributed the club’s struggles this season to the challenges of adapting to a new style of play — a view that was also shared by his teammate Rasmus Hojlund.

United have endured a wretched campaign, most of which has been spent in the bottom half of the table.

Currently, the Red Devils find themselves in 13th place with just 38 points and only seven matches remaining in the season. United have suffered 13 defeats and managed to score just 37 goals so far. Only Everton, West Ham, Ipswich Town, Leicester City, and Southampton have found the back of the net fewer times.

The Europa League stands as United’s sole remaining opportunity to secure silverware this season—and with it, a potential route back into the Champions League.

Eriksen and Hojlund spoke candidly about the team’s struggles during an interview with Sky Sports. Eriksen highlighted the transition from Erik ten Hag’s football philosophy to Ruben Amorim’s tactical approach as a major factor behind United’s difficulties this season.

Eriksen said, “There’s been a lot of talk in this season, but at the same time, we’re at United, so you know there’s going to be a lot of focus on the club and on the players and everything. There have been lots of ups and downs and a few more downs than what we wanted. But we’re still in the Europa League, and then at the same time we will continue pushing in the league until the end.”

“When I arrived with Ten Hag, obviously it was a bit of a different playing style, a bit of a different philosophy of playing. Now, it’s a bit of a different system and you have to adapt to that. Often, when you’re in a season, it’s tougher to turn things around because everyone is already in the rhythm of the manager before, but I think you’re seeing a progression.”

“People are getting more used to the system, the positions they are playing in. It’s more about getting that proper transformation in a good way.”

Hojlund added, “I think if you ask the manager, he wants it to be done by tomorrow. But it’s the same for us as well. We want to do it as best as possible and we want to change it as fast as possible. There’s no recipe to these sort of things. It comes with time.”

The forward told Sky Sports about his goalscoring troubles, “I want to score 100 goals tomorrow if I can, but it’s about progression and keep focusing about what you can do, and how you can get to that level. That’s what we’re trying to do every day, being interested about learning new things, wanting to become better.”

“I think we’re trying to build an environment now where we can grow and where we can develop ourselves. I think it’s a very young group as well. There’s a lot of young people and young players coming through now, which is sort of we’re helping each other. The competition getting sharper, and it helps each other to make us better.”

“Obviously, it’s important to have players like Christian and a little bit older players who can get through with that experience that they have.”

On Hojlund, Eriksen explained that the 22-year-old is unfortunate that he’s under intense pressure courtesy of being at United but he must learn to deal with it.

Eriksen continued, “I’m sure Rasmus has found his way in some way, and, like he said, you always have to learn and develop. But I think, especially here with all the focus from the outside, the spotlight is on you. In a bad time at the club, then obviously it’s going to be a lot harder mentally.”

“It’s very hard for a lot of the young guys where it’s the first time going through this kind of pressure. But I can only imagine, if you go through it, how happy and how easy you will feel afterwards. It’s just about really pushing through and finding your way.”

Hojlund insisted that his Danish counterpart has been a great help to him since he arrived at Old Trafford from Atalanta in 2023.

The forward noted how easy it is to “get into a hole emotionally” but he knew that public criticism was part of the package when he signed for United.

Asked what is the most important piece of advice Eriksen would give his younger self or a player like Hojlund right now, the veteran midfielder answered, “I think in general, not just for Rasmus, but for everyone, it’s finding your own way, because every club is different, any manager, whoever comes through, it’s going to be a different perspective, a different view from the outside, from the inside.”

“So it’s really about finding your own way as a player, finding out why you perform, why you don’t perform, and then from there, just trying to build on it. That was my aim from early on, and that would probably be my advice looking back.”

United are back in action on Sunday when they go away to St James’ Park to face Newcastle. Kick-off is at 16:30 BST.

United set to pounce for Ajax midfield wonderkid dubbed “the next Jude Bellingham” – report

Manchester United’s youth recruitment has been on overdrive since INEOS took control of the sporting affairs of the club.

Last summer, the Red Devils completed deals for Leny Yoro and Chido Obi while in January, Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu and Ayden Heaven joined. All four were below 21.

And with INEOS’ transfer budget expected to be tight once again in the summer, a lot more deals for young players with potential is expected to take place.

As per The Daily Mail, one such player who has captured the attention of United scouts is Ajax’s 16-year-old genius Abdellah Ouazane.

Ajax wonderkid

The teenage midfielder stole the show at the recent U17 Africa Cup of Nations Championships in Morocco as the hosts qualified for semi-finals.

Despite being younger than most of the participants in the competition, Ouazane was a standout. His remarkable athletic style and eye for a goal have earned him comparisons with Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham.

“Manchester United are showing interest in Ajax teenager Abdellah Ouazane. Club scouts watched the 16-year old steal the show at the U17 Africa Cup of Nations Championships in Morocco last week.

“Athletic, excellent on the ball, Ouazane is a versatile midfielder with strong dribbling ability and an eye for both a goal and a pass. He joined Ajax from Zeeburgia in 2016 and has been likened in style to Jude Bellingham.”

Morocco’s coach Nabil Baha was effusive in his praise for the teenage sensation.

Early deal

“He’s a player we count on a lot. He can make the difference. He was born in 2009 — people forget that. He’s a year younger than the others. But he plays at Ajax, and he’s full of talent.

“These days, 100 per cent isn’t enough. Everyone gives 100 per cent. What we need is 120 per cent. And he’s capable of that.”

As expected, the Ajax wonderkid is starting to attract interest from a lot of big clubs and United are looking to pounce early so as to stave off competition.

He has made 11 appearances for Ajax’s U17 side, scoring once while registering an assist. He can play all across the midfield.

English clubs can only sign foreign talents when they turn 18 so it will be interesting to see how the Red Devils go about this potential transfer.
