Man City star ‘plans the ultimate betrayal’ of ‘disappointed’ Guardiola as Man Utd, Chelsea eye ‘cold shower’

Man City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne is attracting interest from four Premier League clubs, including the Citizens’ arch-rivals Man Utd, according to reports.

The Belgium international revealed earlier this month that he will be leaving the Etihad Stadium on a free transfer at the end of the season.

In an emotional letter to fans, De Bruyne said: ‘Dear Manchester, Seeing this you probably realise where this is heading. So I’ll get straight to it and let you all know that these will be my final months as a Manchester City player.

‘Nothing about this is easy to write, but as football players, we all know this day eventually comes. That day is here, and you deserve to hear it from me first.

‘Football led me to all of you – and to this city. Chasing this dream, not knowing this period would change my life. This city. This club. These people… gave me EVERYTHING. I had no choice but to give EVERYTHING back! And guess what – we won EVERYTHING.

‘Whether we like it or not, it’s time to say goodbye. Suri, Rome, Mason, Michele, and I are all grateful for what this place has meant to our family. “Manchester” will forever be on our kids’ passports – and more importantly, in each of our hearts.

‘This will always be our HOME.

‘We cannot thank the city, club, staff, teammates, friends, and family enough for this 10-year ride.

‘Every story comes to an end, but this has definitely been the best chapter.

‘Let’s enjoy these last moments together!’

‘Much love, KDB.’

His new destination is not yet known for sure and now reports in Spain are claiming that he could now choose to move to another Premier League side.

It is claimed that the Belgian ‘plans the ultimate betrayal of Pep Guardiola and Man City’ and ‘what seemed like a friendly goodbye could turn into a bitter farewell’.

His most likely next club seemed to be a side in Major League Soccer or Saudi Arabia, considering he is now 34, but ‘the player himself has opened the door to continuing at the elite level , and that has completely changed the outlook’.

The report, which credits Chelsea, Man Utd, Arsenal and Newcastle with interest, adds:

‘Returning to Stamford Bridge would be an unexpected and almost poetic turn in the Belgian’s career, but it could also be considered a betrayal by the City fans, who have idolised him for almost a decade. Signing for a direct rival isn’t just a sporting decision: it’s a message. And that could feel like a cold shower at the Etihad.

‘In addition to Chelsea, other top English teams are also on the prowl. Arsenal, Manchester United, and even Newcastle are closely monitoring his contract situation. They all value his experience, talent, and ability to make the difference in big matches. A player like De Bruyne, although older than he is, remains a treasure for any title contender.

‘According to sources close to Manchester City, Pep Guardiola did not expect this outcome. The Catalan manager has always maintained a very special relationship with De Bruyne, whom he considers an extension of himself on the pitch. Although the club already has young alternatives for the midfield, the Belgian’s departure represents the end of an era .

‘Guardiola was confident that if De Bruyne left the club, he would do so for a lower league, keeping his image intact with the fans. But the fact that he’s considering staying in the Premier League, and even strengthening a direct competitor, changes things. The manager has yet to speak publicly on the subject, but the discomfort is already palpable in the corridors of the Etihad.’

Amorim regretting taking on “unacceptable” Manchester United job, Keown claims

Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United tenure has been underwhelming since his arrival at the back end of 2023 with his players struggling to adapt to his playing style at Old Trafford.

United are slumped in the bottom half of the Premier League and their latest loss to Newcastle this weekend did little to suggest they will move up the table before the season reaches its conclusion.

It was widely reported Amorim’s preference was to take the United job at the end of the current campaign but INEOS were adamant he started his reign after the sacking of Erik ten Hag.

Amorim has since been left in no doubt of the size of the task ahead of him but it has been suggested he might now be regretting his high profile move to Manchester.

As reported by Football Insider, former Premier League defender Martin Keown believes the United head coach looks disillusioned with what he seeing from his side and could be pondering an early exit.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Keown said he isn’t seeing the required progression from Amorim either personally or in his team’s performances.

“He looks like he’d rather be anywhere else but there. I’m not seeing that he’s really in this,” Keown said.

“He looks like the team – passive, everything going on around him, and he’s not getting his messages across. The defence is error-ridden, there’s no pace in-behind. It must be a joy to play Man United because you can just roll over them.”

Keown slammed United’s league record this year, labelling the 14 defeats as “unacceptable”, with 10 of the 14 coming under the guidance of Amorim.

Despite its heavy nature, Sunday’s defeat would not have taught Amorim anything new about his players, with the majority fighting for their careers at Old Trafford after a wretched campaign.

The lack of quality in key areas is clear to see and a massive summer lies ahead for both Amorim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS consortium who will be charged with providing their new head coach with the tools to bridge the ever growing gap between United and the top sides in the country.

United are now relying on success in the Europa League to save their season and in doing so, help their summer plans by providing a boost to the transfer kitty through Champions League qualification.

It’s expected Amorim’s United will be a different animal going into his first full season in charge, with a full pre-season with players suited to his style providing the key to a successful reign in Manchester.

Picture: under-fire United star adds fuels to raging speculation over his future as he arrives to training with his agent

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana was pictured arriving at Carrington on Monday morning in the company of his agent, after he was dropped from the matchday squad that faced Newcastle on Sunday.

United fell to a heavy 4-1 defeat at St James’ Park, with Altay Bayindir in goal, in what was his first Premier League appearance.

Hours before kick-off, it emerged that Onana had been omitted from the matchday squad following his errors in last week’s Europa League meeting with Lyon at the Groupama Stadium.

The Cameroonian was at fault for both goals the Red Devils conceded, first misjudging Thiago Almada’s free-kick before then parrying a shot into the path of Rayan Cherki, who drew his side level in stoppage time.

Onana’s howlers came off the back of a bitter war of words between himself and former United midfielder Nemanja Matic.

Ruben Amorim insisted that his decision to axe Onana was to help him “disconnect” and clear his head after a difficult few weeks. In addition to enduring a shambolic game vs. Lyon, the 29-year-old’s wife, Melanie, was the victim of a street robbery in Alderley Edge.

In his post-match presser after the loss to Newcastle, Amorim refused to confirm whether or not Onana would be recalled for the return leg with Lyon on Thursday.

Now, The Sun have published images of Onana arriving in Carrington with his agent.

The newspaper confirms that the person who was in the car with Onana was a representative of his agency, Fali Ramadani’s Lian Sports.

The purpose of his agent’s presence remains unclear, though it is presumed to be related to Onana’s future at Old Trafford amid ongoing transfer speculation.

A report covered by The Peoples Person over the weekend claimed that United are prepared to part ways with the shot-stopper for just £20 million – a significant loss from the £47 million they paid to land him from Inter Milan two years ago.

Realiable journalist David Ornstein noted that Onana recently changed representation, initially with the aim of negotiating an improved contract. However, with mounting pressure at United, a move to a new club could now be under consideration.

“If it can inspire some better play, absolutely:” Rory McIlroy reckons he knows how to bring United better luck on the pitch

Top golfer Rory McIlroy has voiced his desire to help motivate Manchester United to improve their results on the pitch.

Having made golfing history by completing a career Grand Slam, McIlroy is now looking to inspire the football club that he has supported his entire life.

Following his historic win, McIlroy was asked whether he would be willing to don his new Masters green jacket at Old Trafford the next time he visits to support his club.

“If it can inspire some better play, absolutely,” McIlroy stated as per ESPN, showing his unwavering support for his team.

While it was a happy day for McIlroy at the Augusta National Golf Course, Man United suffered through a painful afternoon just a few hours earlier, losing 4-1 to Newcastle United.

Although there were some players, such as Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu, who delivered a promising performance, the majority suffered an afternoon to forget.

Victor Lindelof suffered through an abysmal display, while goalkeeper Altay Bayindir would have been disappointed that he was unable to outshine Andre Onana in what was a rare appearance.

Given their shocking run of results throughout the season, United find themselves trapped in 14th place in the Premier League with just 38 points.

Still, there is some hope that the team could salvage their season, given that they are still in contention for the UEFA Europa League title.

Currently in the quarter-finals of the competition, United have impressed so far in the European tournament, yet were unable to get the better of Olympique Lyonnais in a frustrating 2-2 draw.

This was a disappointing result given that United were in touching distance of victory, only to allow the home side to equalise in the final few seconds of the match.

With everything to play for when they host Lyon at Old Trafford for the second leg on Thursday, United will be hoping that some of McIlroy’s magic will rub off on them as they hunt for European silverware.

The build-up is starting to Manchester United’s crunch Europa League tie with Lyon on Thursday.

The quarter-final second leg at Old Trafford (20:00 BST) is all square at 2-2, following Rayan Cherki’s equaliser with virtually the last kick of the game in France, after goals by Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee had overturned Thiago Almada’s free-kick opener.

With the need for a raucous atmosphere at the Theatre of Dreams to back Ruben Amorim’s side, anticipation is already increasing for a competition that represents our last chance of winning a trophy despite the well-documented difficulties in the Premier League.

Not only would glory in Bilbao on 21 May mean silverware for the third successive season but also a coveted spot in next term’s Champions League.

Athletic Club and Rangers await the victors in the semi-finals before then.

Amorim’s squad will be preparing for the encounter after recovering from the defeat at Newcastle United, with the work on the grass and in the gym under way at Carrington.

However, our cameras will be in place to film the first part of Wednesday’s session live for MUTV subscribers (also available to view on the United App and ManUtd.com), allowing an inside view in advance of the game, as is customary for European fixtures.

Please check in from around 11:00 BST, on the day, to see training as it happens.

Keep an eye out for a photo gallery as well, as we focus on those participating in the group.

Amorim and a player, yet to be confirmed, will be speaking at a press conference, which is to be held at the Jimmy Murphy Centre.

This will start at 13:30 BST on Wednesday and, again, will be covered live and in full across our official club channels, as we get an update on the latest team news for the big game.

Of course, Lyon’s squad and plans for the encounter are also going to be important, as we supply the best build-up in advance of a match that means so much in the context of our season.

You can get involved with our polls in the United App and also enter our United Predictions game as we count down to what will hopefully be a special occasion in M16.

United players in awe of club’s latest wonderkid after impressing Ruben Amorim in training – report

There was “little surprise” amongst the Manchester United senior squad when Ruben Amorim named the starting XI to face Newcastle and Harry Amass’ name was pencilled in at left wing-back, according to a report by Daily Mail.

Nathan Salt (MailSport) reveals the 18-year-old defender’s successful ascension into the United first-team now means the rest of the team see the starlet as “part of the furniture” at Old Trafford.

And there was widespread expectation amongst the Red Devil squad that Amass’ debut would come sooner rather than later, after a series of impressive performances in training.

Earlier in the week, both Diogo Dalot and Harry Maguire pulled Amass aside to hold one-on-one conversations with the 18-year-old fullback, according to the report.

“Mail Sport understands that Diogo Dalot held a long debrief with Amass after one training session last week to talk through his game and share tidbits of information given he plays the same wing-back role.

“Harry Maguire too, a former captain and a key figure in the United dressing room, pulled Amass aside for a chat a few days ago to tell him the squad felt he was closing in on his first start. His hard work was not going under the radar.”

Similarly, Mason Mount has formed a “particularly good relationship” with Amass this season, with both players hailing from London originally.

One dressing room source reveals the three senior stars have been “invaluable” in helping their younger teammate establish himself in the first-team squad.

And set against the backdrop of an intimidating St James’ Park, Amass rewarded their efforts, becoming the fourth youngster to make his for the Red Devils, behind Mason Greenwood, Federico Macheda and Phil Neville.

It would be hard to find a more difficult match for an undersized defender to make his first Premier League start than an away clash with Newcastle, notorious for their physical power and aggression under Eddie Howe.

But this is what Amorim and his coaching staff felt the 5’9 Amass was capable of; and the youngster matched their expectations, even while enduring some expected moments of difficulty along the way.

Amass initially appeared like the match may have come too early for him with Newcastle’s pace and power giving the defender issues early on. But the 18-year-old did not let the occasion cause him to wilt, and grew into the game as the first-half progressed.

The wing-back made two particularly nice run downs the left, demonstrating his excellent technical ability, which has impressed youth coaches at both club and international level.

Amass was eventually withdrawn at the 55th minute mark for Danish international Patrick Dorgu with the game poised at 2-1 in Newcastle’s advantage.

The implosion United experienced after this point is best left as a distant memory but the positive performance of the team’s latest academy product should offer optimism for the future.

Video: Amad provides incredibly positive injury update as he closes in on sensational return to action

Manchester United have been handed a huge Amad injury boost this afternoon, after Sunday’s humiliating loss at the hands of Newcastle.

United were beaten 4-1 at St James’ Park – a result that saw Ruben Amorim’s men drop down to 14th place in the Premier League standings.

Following their latest disappointing result, United can no longer match their previous lowest-ever points tally of 58.

But, it’s not all doom and gloom as some good news has now come out of Carrington and it involves Amad.

Last week, the club revealed that the Ivorian was training in the gym and stepping up his recovery after being sidelined for several weeks with an ankle injury.

Now, the player himself has confirmed that he is back in training on the grass, as he closes in on a sensational return to action.

Amad posted a video on his Instagram account of him running across the turf at United’s training complex.

Back on the grass.😍🇨🇮 pic.twitter.com/wTRpO3XO70

— (fan) 𝗔𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗺’𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘀 ✍🏼🇵🇹 (@AmorimBalll_) April 14, 2025

The 22-year-old hasn’t lined up for the Red Devils since February. It was initially thought that he would be out for the remainder of the season but a more positive medical update was issued by Ruben Amorim, who relayed that he expected the forward to be back for the final fixtures.

While he is now training on the grass, it may still take some time before Amad is able to take part in full contact training.

Although United’s Premier League season is a write-off, Amad could return to have an impact on the club’s Europa League journey.

United welcome Lyon at Old Trafford on Thursday for the return leg of their quarter-final tie. The score currently stands at 2-2 from the first leg at the Groupama Stadium.

The contest will kick off at 20:00 BST.

Ornstein reveals hopes of selling Man Utd flop are ‘almost non-existent’ in Amorim dilemma

Man Utd could have to keep Andre Onana as their number one goalkeeper for another season as hopes of “a profit are almost non-existent”.

The Red Devils have had a season to forget with their 4-1 defeat to Newcastle on Sunday meaning Man Utd are now 14th in the Premier League table, below David Moyes’ Everton.

One player who has been particularly poor in recent weeks is Onana with Ruben Amorim dropping the Cameroon international from the squad to face the Magpies over the weekend.

That came after Onana was at fault for both Lyon goals as Man Utd drew 2-2 against the French side in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final.

Explaining his decision to drop Onana, Amorim told Sky Sports on Sunday: “Of course, you have to see the context. It is a normal thing. Sometimes, you have to push the player to play again, sometimes you have to let him disconnect a little bit.

“Tomorrow, he will be in training to prepare for the next one [Lyon] so I felt that it was a good time for Andre to disconnect.

“I think he was okay [about it] because I explained and then, you don’t need to like [it], but you understand because I explain every situation.”

Amorim added: “It’s a normal situation. You have to manage everything, sometimes people just look at the physical aspect but the mental aspect is really, really important.

“It’s for just one game and we give Altay an opportunity, he deserves it also and then, again, tomorrow is a new life and we will prepare for the next one.”

There have been reports recently that Amorim ‘wants’ Onana ‘out’ of Old Trafford in the summer with Espanyol’s Joan Garcia and Real Sociedad’s Alex Remiro among the players linked to replace him.

But The Athletic‘s David Ornstein insists that a sale is unlikely as the possibility of making a profit on the £47.2m they paid in 2023 for Onana is “almost non-existent”.

Ornstein told NBC Sports: “It does raise questions about the future of Onana. He joined for £47.2 million in the summer of 2023, signing a five-year contract with the option of a further 12 months.

“Unless somebody came in with huge money for him, the hopes of United selling him for a profit are almost non-existent, and that would mean a PSR profitability and sustainability loss, which could rule out the possibility of selling him.

“He has switched agents in recent months. That was meant for a new contract or improved terms. He may now have to look at trying to shift his player, and this would not have been expected for Manchester United.”

Gary Neville rips into the quality of United’s squad, names just two players he feels are up to the task

The fallout from Manchester United’s latest Premier League defeat has been damning, with fans pundits and laying into Ruben Amorim’s side after the 4-1 loss at St. James Park.

Newcastle United outfought and outplayed a United side that is now guaranteed to finish with their lowest ever points tally in the history of the Premier League.

Furthermore, the hosts completed their first league double over United for almost 100 years as the ugly, unwanted stats continue to pile up on Amorim and his underperforming stars.

As reported by Sky Sports, Gary Neville was one of the high profile names quizzed on the performance and the former club captain didn’t hold back in his assessment of where he feels this United side are currently at.

Speaking in his role on NBC Sports, Neville believes the players at Amorim’s disposal are just not up to the level and despite their best efforts, major surgery is needed in the upcoming transfer window.

“They are not a very good team, it’s as simple as that. I said at the start of the game that if Newcastle play well, Man Utd will get beat.

“The problem with this group of players they are giving it their all. There isn’t a lack of effort. They are so below the standard and quality you need at that football club, all over the pitch,” he said.

Neville named Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo as the only players he would “hang his hat on” before continuing to pick apart the “massive issues” at Old Trafford, starting with the system currently being deployed.

“The system is a problem. I’ve asked this question for about two months, who are the natural wing backs? Players that are good going forward, that have great energy and that are good enough going back. Who are those players?

“Who are these two players he plays in behind the striker? They need a centre-forward who is going to carry the line,” he added.

Neville admits United are way off the standard required at the moment and concluded by saying Amorim is going to need time and relevant support from INEOS if he is to turn the tide.

“Honestly, you don’t know where to start, you don’t know where to build the first step from, and that’s the problem at the moment.

There’s a serious amount of time required and good recruitment for that club to get right,” he said.

Whilst Neville makes valid points regarding the quality of the squad, United could be forgiven for having one eye on the huge upcoming European League quarter final second leg against Lyon on Thursday which was reflected in Amorim’s starting XI at Newcastle and the timing of his substitutions.

Getting minutes into important returning players such as Mason Mount, Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw would have been pre-planned before the Newcastle game with the trio hoping to play a part in midweek.

Amorim will be hoping he finds the formula to see of the French outfit and progress to the semi final, which would keep the season alive for another few weeks at least.

David Ornstein reveals Onana’s reaction to being dropped for Newcastle defeat

Journalist David Ornstein has revealed how goalkeeper Andre Onana reacted to being dropped for Manchester United’s match against Newcastle United yesterday.

Onana’s status as the club’s number one shot-stopper appeared to be in jeopardy after his disastrous performance in the 2-2 draw with Olympique Lyonnais earlier in the week.

It therefore came as little surprise that manager Ruben Amorim decided to drop Onana for the Newcastle game, replacing him with Altay Bayindir.

Despite the change in goalkeepers, United’s fortunes on the pitch remained woeful, with Amorim’s team being hammered 4-1 by Newcastle.

Given that Bayindir’s performance made little difference to his team’s fortunes, it would have been fascinating to know how Onana would have responded to his axing.

This morning, Ornstein came back with an answer.

“He [Onana] didn’t travel with the squad to the northeast of England. This was a decision made by Ruben Amorim, the Manchester United head coach. It was accepted professionally by Onana,” Ornstein told NBC Sports as quoted by GIVEMESPORT.

“Amorim wanted to take him out of the firing line, his performances, his comments before the Lyon tie, the very distressing mugging suffered by his wife recently in the local area,” Ornstein explained, adding more context to the situation.

“And this is something he was informed about on Saturday yesterday, so he would have known it before the stories broke.”

Given Ornstein’s update, it appears that Amorim has not necessarily lost patience with Onana but rather decided to give the Cameroonian a break from the limelight given his challenging situation.

Still, even as it appears that Onana and Amorim’s relationship might still be healthy, transfer rumours regarding Onana continue to swirl around.

Yesterday, it was reported that United could part ways with him for just £20 million, given their supposed desperation to offload him.

Although Amorim may be sensitive to Onana’s struggles, the goalkeeper will need to improve his form in order to convince his manager that he is indeed the type of talented goalkeeper that United need going forward.
