Top golfer Rory McIlroy has voiced his desire to help motivate Manchester United to improve their results on the pitch.
Having made golfing history by completing a career Grand Slam, McIlroy is now looking to inspire the football club that he has supported his entire life.
Following his historic win, McIlroy was asked whether he would be willing to don his new Masters green jacket at Old Trafford the next time he visits to support his club.
“If it can inspire some better play, absolutely,” McIlroy stated as per ESPN, showing his unwavering support for his team.
While it was a happy day for McIlroy at the Augusta National Golf Course, Man United suffered through a painful afternoon just a few hours earlier, losing 4-1 to Newcastle United.
Although there were some players, such as Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu, who delivered a promising performance, the majority suffered an afternoon to forget.
Victor Lindelof suffered through an abysmal display, while goalkeeper Altay Bayindir would have been disappointed that he was unable to outshine Andre Onana in what was a rare appearance.
Given their shocking run of results throughout the season, United find themselves trapped in 14th place in the Premier League with just 38 points.
Still, there is some hope that the team could salvage their season, given that they are still in contention for the UEFA Europa League title.
Currently in the quarter-finals of the competition, United have impressed so far in the European tournament, yet were unable to get the better of Olympique Lyonnais in a frustrating 2-2 draw.
This was a disappointing result given that United were in touching distance of victory, only to allow the home side to equalise in the final few seconds of the match.
With everything to play for when they host Lyon at Old Trafford for the second leg on Thursday, United will be hoping that some of McIlroy’s magic will rub off on them as they hunt for European silverware.
