United launch ambitious raid for €60m goalkeeping sensation on everyone’s lips in Europe – report

Manchester United are reportedly keeping close tabs on Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Kaua Santos ahead of the summer transfer window.

The goalkeeper position is increasingly becoming a huge concern for Ruben Amorim and the recruitment department, amidst uncertainty over Andre Onana and his deputy, Altay Bayindir. Both shot-stoppers have proven to be extremely error-prone and therefore unreliable.

Onana was culpable for both goals United conceded in the 2-2 Europa League draw with Lyon last week. The Cameroonian was dropped from United’s matchday squad for the subsequent Premier League meeting with Newcastle as a result. Bayindir was given the nod to start between the sticks but failed to justify his selection, conceding four goals from six shots on target and gifting the Magpies their fourth goal of the evening.

There has been increased chatter that Onana and Bayindir’s days at Old Trafford are numbered, with the club now gearing to dip into the market for their replacements. United have been linked to a number of goalkeepers including Lucas Chevalier (Lille), James Trafford (Newcastle), Senne Lamments (Royal Antwerp) and Bart Verbruggen (Brighton and Hove Albion).

Last month, a report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United attempted to sign Santos last year but they failed in their bid to land him as Frankfurt reacted quickly and tied him down to fresh terms.

Santos has been tipped to be the successor to Ederson (Manchester City) and Allison (Liverpool) in the Brazil national team.

Now, Sport Bild claim that United have renewed their interest in Santos and have even made an enquiry for him, potentially with a view to getting a deal over the line.

According to the German news outlet, “all of Europe’s top clubs” have the 23-year-old on their list. It’s understood that after his fine performance for Frankfurt against Tottenham Hotspur last week, the North London club’s technical director, Johan Lange, asked about his availability.

Lange was not alone as United’s director of recruitment Christopher Vivell, also spoke to Frankfurt chief Markus Krösche about Santos. Vivell is believed to have asked about Santos’ “future plans.”

Sport Bild note that anyone who wants Santos will have to fork out in excess of €60m to secure his services. Frankfurt have no desire to offload him unless a huge bid arrives.

Those close to the Vassouras-born footballer are of the opinion that he would benefit from staying at Frankfurt in the meantime to refine his trade and then seek a bigger move later in his career. They liken his situation to Bayern Munich legend Manuel Neuer, who made his name at Schalke before completing a switch to Bavaria.

Santos has made 13 appearances this season across the Bundesliga and Europa League. He has conceded 18 goals and kept three clean sheets in that period.

He made an immediate impact on his debut, coming off the bench at half-time to replace the injured Kevin Trapp during Frankfurt’s win over Wolfsburg. Standing at 6’4″, he’s a physically imposing goalkeeper with a strong, commanding presence between the posts.

After his performance in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham, German football legend Lothar Matthäus branded his saves “world-class.”

It remains to be seen whether United will intensify their pursuit of Santos or be deterred by his hefty price tag.

3-4-3: Amorim has chosen these 11 gladiators to see United safely to the Europa League semi-final – prediction

Ruben Amorim has said Andre Onana will be the starting goalkeeper against Olympique Lyonnais in the Europa League quarter final second leg tonight.

Amorim has also confirmed that Joshua Zirkzee is out for the season after picking up a hamstring injury against Newcastle.

Harry Maguire will almost certainly return to the starting lineup, having been rested against the Geordies. Casemiro and Patrick Dorgu, too, should return.

We expect Victor Lindelof to make way for Maguire, with Noussair Mazraoui and Leny Yoro keeping their places in the back three.

Diogo Dalot, an almost ever-present this season, will be right wing back with Dorgu on the left.

Other defensive options are Luke Shaw, who got a few minutes on Sunday, and Harry Amass, who made his first Premier League start in the 4-1 defeat.

Matthijs de Ligt is still out but expected back soon. Ayden Heaven is also out again, having had a “small setback”. Jonny Evans is back in training but not ready for selection, while Lisandro Martinez is out for several months.

Casemiro and Manu Ugarte will likely be the midfield pair.

Kobbie Mainoo is also available for selection in midfield but he has not had much football lately so is likely to be ring rusty. Christian Eriksen played on Sunday, so it is unlikely he’ll start this one. Toby Collyer is still injured.

Up front, in Zirkzee’s absence, Rasmus Hojlund will almost certainly return, with Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho the twin 10’s.

Mason Mount is another option but Amorim seems reluctant to start him. If he were to be in the initial XI, it might mean Ugarte dropping to the bench and Bruno Fernandes playing alongside Casemiro in midfield.

Chido Obi is not registered to play in the competition but there may be a spot on the bench for the impressive Gabriele Biancheri, who has been called up to first team training.

Amad is back training on the grass but not yet in team training.

It is clearly United’s biggest game of the season so far and so the re-introduction of Onana and Hojlund, players struggling desperately for form, is a big gamble by the head coach. But it is also the perfect opportunity for both to silence their critics and turn themselves from zeroes to heroes in the space of 90 short minutes.

Here then is our predicted line-up for tonight’s 8pm kick-off:

Robbie Savage on hitting 100 points and the managers who influenced him most…

Robbie Savage’s Diary: 100 points and the managers who influenced me most…

In association with Planet Sport Bet, Robbie Savage is taking us behind the scenes each week at NPL champions Macclesfield FC.

Robbie has played one of the leading roles in the rebirth of a now-thriving football club, first as director of football, now as first-team manager as the Silkmen climb their way from the ninth tier back to the Football League.

This week, the gaffer gives us an insight into his management style and the influences that shaped him as a boss… …

Another weekend, another win, and another milestone. But it’s not enough yet…

Victory at Guiseley took us to 100 points for the season. Our hosts were unbeaten in their last eight, targeting the NPL runners-up spot with eyes on a home semi-final in the play-offs. But we were just too strong, running out 3-0 winners, leaving us one goal off our target of 100 goals and a win short of the 103 points that would, statistically, make us the NPL Premier Division’s best-ever team in a 42-game season.

I don’t need that validation – I already know this is the best side to play at this level. But a record points total would make it undeniable and kill dead any claims to the contrary from the doubters that remain.

From a personal perspective, every record we break and every new benchmark we set is a satisfying way of silencing the critics who expected me to fail as Macclesfield manager.

Out and about recently, I bumped into the former owner and chairman of one of the very biggest football clubs. Even he referenced the narrative that I was managing from the backseat while I worked as director of football – that’s how far the myth had spread. That’s why I felt I had no choice but to take the role when it was offered to me last summer. If I was being judged on the job, I might as well actually do it!

So 100 points , 99 goals , and 2,56 is best ppg at any level I believe 🏆💙
Since 1968 since NPL started records are
42 game season 103 points
44 game season 104 points
46 game season 104 points @thesilkmen 100 points 3 games to go 💙

— Robbie Savage (@RobbieSavage8) April 13, 2025

As I’ve alluded to, I previously had little ambition of being a manager. But, in hindsight, maybe it was inevitable given the experience I’ve had in the game and the influences that have rubbed off on me.

I’ve been lucky to work under some fantastic managers. I started at Manchester United, where Sir Alex Ferguson ruled over everything, but it was Eric Harrison who bossed the Class of ’92’s dressing room. David Beckham, Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes… they have all spoken of the influence Eric had on them as footballers and young men. He made me consider for the first time what drove me and the other players around me. He was a hard man to please, firm but fair, and a simple ‘well done’ from him made you feel a million dollars.

From there, I went to Crewe, where I learned more about the tactical side of the game. I didn’t particularly enjoy it at the time, all the standing around working on team shape and strategy. I just wanted to play, have the ball at my feet and thunder into tackles. But it was a valuable grounding that stood me in good stead for organising and captaining four Premier League teams.

Then I went to Leicester to play under Martin O’Neill. I’d say of all the managers I played for, it’s Martin’s style that most resembles my own.

He was a brilliant man-manager and that, I believe, is a biggest attribute for any boss. There are so many facets to management, but what’s the point in being the greatest tactician if you can’t connect with people or motivate individuals and groups?

All the successful managers I played for had that ability to communicate with players, to inspire and empathise with them. I don’t think it is a coincidence that they all had stellar playing careers of their own.

When it comes to motivation, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Some players react positively to a rocket; others need the arm around their shoulder.

I remember playing for Leicester when we got hammered at Southampton. Martin came in, steamrollered a few of us, then started telling Steve Guppy how brilliant he had been. Now, Gups was fantastic for us, but that day he was as rotten as the rest of the team. We hammered him on the coach back to Leicester. But Martin knew he had to tread more carefully with some individuals and he knew what made Steve – and all of us – tick.

It was similar at Birmingham under Steve Bruce. We were just above the relegation zone when we signed Christophe Dugarry mid-season in 2003. It was a major coup, though eyebrows were raised over how this talismanic World Cup winner, ex AC Milan and Barcelona, with 75 France caps might adapt to a relegation battle with Blues. He was brilliant. Not quite good enough to take the Player of the Season Award off me, but what a player!

The following pre-season, it was time to sweat. We were all packed off to the edge of the training ground, with the instruction to run as hard as we could for 5km. Off we went, but Christophe quickly dropped off the pace, not remotely concerned at the prospect of being lapped by a passing snail. Brucey made a token effort to speed him up, but it fell on deaf ears.

‘No. Give me a ball. I play with a ball.’ Was it worth picking a fight? No. Brucey saw how Sir Alex had managed Eric Cantona and took a similar approach. And when you see his pedigree and his performances in matches, how can the other players argue? It was all part of getting the very best out of Christophe when Saturday comes.

Nigel Clough was great too, recognising that players at different stages of their lives and careers need managing in different ways. Playing with, and then for, my hero Mark Hughes helped me navigate the change of role at Macclesfield, where the players were already familiar with me.

There are countless textbooks written on man-management, but the very best have an instinct and a feel for it. In that respect, I’ve learned from some of the best.

For example, I watched Martin O’Neill, like Sir Alex at United, be a brilliant delegator. He surrounded himself with good people, great coaches who collectively covered all the bases. But leading it all, tying it all together, was the gaffer.

That’s the model I have built around me here at Macclesfield. I have John McMahon, a vastly-experienced pro-licence coach who will expertly deliver a session on any topic we feel is necessary. Nigel Keogh is great with some of the more technical detail, while Peter Band looks after other aspects, like set-pieces. I really feel that we dovetail each other wonderfully and my responsibility is to bring it all together, to prompt the kind of performances that have led to a 100-point haul with three games to go.

Our management team 💙 pic.twitter.com/Ehi4z2IEyu

— Macclesfield FC (C) (@thesilkmen) April 5, 2025

Like with any great XI, a coaching team wins or loses by the chemistry within it. This is why I see myself as a manager, not a head coach. If, one day in the future, I was to manage elsewhere, I would not want to be dropped into a club to lead a coaching staff I was unfamiliar with. Again, similar to the bond between players and a manager, it takes time to build that trust. Players aren’t daft. They will pick up on any fracture in a relationship between coaches.

When we leave the NPL in a few weeks, I’ll be leaving behind some great contemporaries, managers I really respect. To name a few: Steve Daley (Prescott Cables), Michael Dunwell (Stockton Town), Craig Lynch (Morpeth), Neil Reynolds (Warrington Rylands), and Josh Brehaut (Leek Town) could manage at a higher level. Some of the others… let’s just say I’ve been staggered at how some teams have been set up to take us on.

We have three games to go, two over the Easter weekend. We face Ilkeston Town at home on Saturday and Leek Town away on Easter Monday. We haven’t beaten either side yet this season and though we will have to utilise the whole squad, all the lads are eager to put that right on the way, hopefully, to 109 points.

Picture: Even without Zirkzee, Amorim has an “unstoppable” Academy ace up his sleeve for Europa League decider – opinion

Manchester United’s season rides on Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final second leg tie and Joshua Zirkzee’s injury could not have come at a worse time.

The Dutchman was starting to shine under Ruben Amorim but as The Peoples Person relayed, he will be missing the rest of the season due to a hamstring injury.

That effectively means the head coach only has Rasmus Hojlund as his sole striking option and the Dane’s form does not inspire confidence.

On top of that Amad remains sidelined while Alejandro Garnacho’s form has also fallen off a cliff. The Portuguese tactician could do with more attacking help.

Limp Attack

Unfortunately, one player who could have turned the tide is Academy wonderkid Chido Obi but he is ineligible to represent the Red Devils in Europe this season.

However, another Carrington graduate has the chance to step up on Thursday and he has already shown how capable he is for the academy.

The 18-year-old Gabriele Biancheri has been on fire for the youth team, netting 20 goals while also registering five assists from only 19 starts across all competitions.

Gabriele Biancheri has 20 goals in 30 appearances for #MUAcademy this season.

— UtdDistrict (@UtdDistrict) April 16, 2025

This includes eight goals for the reserves and 12 for the U18s. The Welsh U19 international can not only play up top but also wide on the left and has proven to be “unstoppable” this season.

Biancheri’s chance to shine?

His goalscoring prowess has clearly caught Amorim’s eye and the former Cardiff starlet was called up for the first-team training a day before the game.

Physicality might be an issue but his speed, technique and eye for goal make him a unique talent. He remains the best bet as a late substitute among the other options in the squad currently and it will not be surprising if Amorim includes him in the matchday squad.

Biancheri has had to bide his time, watching on as Chido Obi overtook him in the pecking order as the ex-Arsenal starlet made his first-team debut before him.

But Thursday could be finally be his chance to shine. United fans have prepared something special and every member of the squad needs to pull together to make it a night to remember for the club.

Video: Ruben Amorim responds to Rory McIlroy’s comments on United after historic Masters success

Ruben Amorim has sent a message to Manchester United fan and golfing star Rory McIlroy after his incredible victory at The Masters last weekend.

The Northern Irishman completed a historic grand slam with his win at Augusta, becoming just the sixth player to achieve the feat in the sport.

McIlroy was asked about United in his post-tournament press conferences and the 35-year-old hopes his success could rub off on Amorim’s side in what remains of the season.

“If it can inspire some better play, absolutely,” he said.

Today, the United head coach responded to McIlroy’s comments, offering his congratulations and inviting the golf legend to Old Trafford to show off his prize and coveted green jacket.

The video was posted on X via United’s official page with Amorim speaking directly to the new Masters champion.

Ruben 🤝 @McIlroyRory

An open invite to a lifelong Red and latest winner of @TheMasters 📩⛳️#MUFC

— Manchester United (@ManUtd) April 16, 2025

“Hi Rory. Congratulations for The Masters and I want to invite you to Old Trafford to show your trophy.

It is really important to us in this moment. You achieved something that a lot of people thought would be impossible and we want that feeling in our stadium. So, I hope to see you soon at Old Trafford and to meet you,” he said.

Should he accept the calling, it will not be the first time McIlroy has paraded a trophy around the Theatre of Dreams after his win at The Open granted him a similar invitation just over a decade ago.

With only a handful of fixtures remaining at Old Trafford, McIlroy will have to be quick if he is to get in front of the United crowd before they draw a line under what has been a horrific season to date.

Amorim will be desperate for McIlroy’s success to rub off on his players in what remains of the Europa League, with the European competition the last hope of saving a disastrous campaign.

After a 2-2 draw in France last week, United welcome Lyon to Old Trafford for the crucial second leg tomorrow (Thursday), in a fight for a place in the semi final.

McIlroy will no doubt be joining the thousands of United fans getting behind Amorim and his side for the season defining encounter.

Man Utd: ‘Surprising decision’ made to slash price for Amorim starter with INEOS ‘determined to cash in’

Man Utd co-owners INEOS have lowered their asking price for Alejandro Garnacho ahead of the summer transfer window, according to reports.

The Red Devils are having a nightmare season in the Premier League with Ruben Amorim’s side currently 14th as they head into their final six matches of the campaign.

Amorim’s outfit will go down as the worst side to play in the Premier League for Man Utd with the Red Devils currently on 38 points.

There are concerns as to how anything will get better next season as Man Utd could find it hard to raise the funds to make the improvements needed to give Amorim the tools to turn things around.

However, there have been rumours that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS are willing to entertain offers for Garnacho and his Man Utd team-mate Kobbie Mainoo.

Although they are two of their more talented players, there is a feeling that the Man Utd board see them as potentially expendable if they can use the cash to improve the current squad.

Paul Scholes predicts the duo will be sold, he said earlier this month: “It has to be a major concern. Where’s the money coming from for new signings? We saw those interviews with Sir Jim and they didn’t make good reading.

“It doesn’t look like Ruben Amorim will get a war chest to go to war with. It doesn’t feel like that.

“I get the impression, and I could be wrong, but I think they might sell the two young players. I think they might sell Mainoo and Garnacho.

“Maybe they sell them this summer. The Mainoo one would hurt. They both would. Garnacho came later but Mainoo has been at the club since he was a kid.

“He had a brilliant season last year and it makes the academy system look bad if a player like him can’t make it and they have to sell him.

“I hope I’m wrong, I hope they don’t do that, but the noises I hear, it is a big concern.”

Garnacho was out of favour at Old Trafford under Amorim but the Argentina international is now firmly in the Portuguese head coach’s plans and has started the last eight matches in all competitions.

But Spanish website Fichajes insists that Man Utd have made a ‘surprising decision in the final stretch of the season’ to ‘lower’ their asking price for Garnacho to just €40m (£34m).

The report adds:

‘This is a significant reduction from the price tag that was being floated a few months ago, and it opens the door to a possible exit for the young Argentine talent.

‘The Old Trafford board seems determined to cash in on the winger, who would not fit into the plans of Rubén Amorim, the manager strongly tipped to take over the team.’

There are three clubs interested in signing the Man Utd winger, the report explains:

‘Given this situation, several teams have reacted quickly. Atletico Madrid, aware of the player’s potential and with the sentimental connection that his Spanish nationality and heritage implies, has already expressed interest. Napoli also appears on the list as an attractive option, while Chelsea is considering his signing as part of its offensive rejuvenation policy.’

Man Utd summer departure ‘could return to Old Trafford’ as £470k-a-week duo refuse to leave

Man Utd could pursue a deal to bring Scott McTominay back to Old Trafford from Serie A giants Napoli in the summer, according to reports.

The Red Devils sold the Scotland international for €30.5m (£25.7m) in the summer transfer window as they looked to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

McTominay’s sale represented pure profit as the player had come through the Man Utd academy with Erik ten Hag not sounding particularly keen on his sale at the time.

Speaking about the Scot’s departure at the time, Ten Hag commented: “Unfortunately, it’s the rules. You have to discuss the rules to do sales and obviously homegrown players, academy players, bring more value.

“It’s not the right thing to do but for everyone, for all parts, it’s a good deal. For Scott, he is happy with it. Of course, for Napoli, a very good player but also for us.”

Ten Hag, who was sacked at the end of October, added: “I’m very happy for him and for us, but it’s mixed [feelings] because I would have preferred not to lose him. He has Manchester United in his veins… He was so important for our team, he was at Manchester United for over 22 years.”

McTominay has gone from strength to strength since leaving Man Utd for Napoli with the Italians just three points behind leaders Inter Milan in the Serie A title race.

The Scotland international has played a key role for Antonio Conte’s side with eight goals and two assists from midfield in 28 Serie A fixtures this season.

Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport insisted McTominay is the signing of the season in Serie A, while Gazzetta dello Sport have branded him ‘Lord of the midfield’ in recent times.

And now Spanish website Fichajes claim that McTominay ‘could return to Old Trafford’ in the summer with Man Utd monitoring his performances.

It is claimed that the former Man Utd midfielder ‘who is shining away from Old Trafford could return to the English club’ with the report adding:

‘United fans closely follow the player’s every step, and many dream of seeing him back in red in the Premier League. However, his performance in Serie A has significantly increased his market value, complicating a return deal.

‘Furthermore, Napoli has no intention of easily parting ways with a player who has become a key player both defensively and offensively.

‘For his part, McTominay himself is going through one of the best moments of his career and doesn’t seem in a hurry to change his surroundings.

‘Settled into a competitive club, in a city that has welcomed him enthusiastically and with the full confidence of the coaching staff, the Scot enjoys a stability that could outweigh any offer from England. His history with United isn’t forgotten, but for now, it belongs to the past.’

It could be a complicated summer transfer window for Man Utd with the Red Devils expected to have to offload players before they can make serious inroads into the market.

And things could be complicated with reports claiming Andre Onana and Casemiro – who have two of their worst performers this season – are refusing to leave.

The pair are on a combined £470,000 a week in wages but the Daily Mail insists that Onana ‘wants to stay’ at Old Trafford, where he was dropped for their last match against Newcastle, ‘despite interest from Europe and Saudi Arabia’.

While Casemiro has verbally announced his intention to see out his contract at Old Trafford, he said in February: “I have one and a half years left on my contract and I would like to finish it here in Manchester.

“I am comfortable here and so is my family. They have adapted, we speak English.”

Ex-United and Lyon ace picks his “favourites” to go through ahead of epic Europa showdown

Former Manchester United and Olympique Lyonnais defender Rafael has insisted that the Premier League club are the favourites to win their Europa League quarter-final tie.

United are set to host Lyon on Thursday in the return leg following last week’s 2-2 draw at the Groupama Stadium.

The Red Devils have endured a wretched Premier League season that currently has them in 14th place in the Premier League table with just 38 points gained and six matches left to play.

The club’s top-flight campaign is a write-off at this point, with full focus on the Europa League, which not only represents a chance to win silverware but also to qualify for the Champions League.

In his press conference ahead of the clash with Lyon, Ruben Amorim stressed the significant impact Champions League qualification would have on United’s summer transfer plans. He noted that not only would the financial boost be crucial, but competing in Europe’s elite tournament would also make it much easier to attract top talent.

The stakes couldn’t be higher for United and Rafael, who lined up for both sides before he called time on his professional career, has weighed in on the situation.

According to Rafael, Lyon have the tools to hurt the Red Devils but considering the fact that Amorim’s men are at home, he fancies their chances of going through.

The 34-year-old told L’Equipe [via Get French Football News], “With the ball, I think Lyon has a better team than United.”

“They’re more technical, more intelligent. But the match takes place at Old Trafford, and United are the favourites.”

Lyon have been dealt a huge injury boost, with Malick Fofana included in the Ligue 1 outfit’s travelling squad.

The tricky forward missed the first leg due to an injury but is now available to Paul Fonseca for selection. Fofana has struck 10 goals this season.

United vs. Lyon kicks off at 20:00 BST.

Aston Villa should be ‘furious’ with themselves instead of Arsenal over £40m transfer decision

Aston Villa and Manchester United should share a £40m January transfer regret – and not just because of Marcus Rashford. Arsenal were ready and willing to make a move all parties would be perfectly happy with now.

Aston Villa and Ollie Watkins
It was suggested that Villa were ‘furious’
when their preparations for a critical Champions League game with Celtic were interrupted by the fax machine whirring across details of an offer from Arsenal for Ollie Watkins.

The reaction would have been understandable; Arsenal’s great January striker search landed in the last couple of days of the window on an England international forward rated at £60m by his Premier League rival club, for whom they offered £40m. They could have at least chucked another £1 in there to trigger any secret release clauses which weren’t actually release clauses whatsoever. Amateurs.

Watkins did score his first career Champions League goal in that Celtic victory but he also missed a penalty and a handful of other chances while Morgan Rogers netted a hat-trick. And little did he know that would essentially mark the end of his first campaign in Europe’s premier competition.

The 29-year-old started both legs of the last-16 tie with Club Brugge but was substituted at half-time of the second, then was trusted with 25 minutes of a possible 180 in the quarter-final with Paris Saint-Germain.

In between, Watkins scored as a substitute against Southampton despite being inevitably “not happy to sit on the bench”. His contribution has been welcome in their Champions League qualification bid and run to the FA Cup semi-final but his gradual marginalisation since January implies Villa could have taken the £40m and coped well enough.

Unai Emery teased a partnership between Watkins and loanee Marcus Rashford before that thrilling second leg against PSG, yet he stressed the need for more “time” and “practice” in training. There are echoes of the battle for supremacy between Watkins and Jhon Duran earlier in the season; the loser of that battle left in January and the winner might be forced out by Rashford months later.

Premier League table since the closure of the January transfer window:

Liverpool and Trent Alexander-Arnold
It is pure, unadulterated, uncut hindsight but Liverpool really might have been better off calling Real Madrid and potentially Trent Alexander-Arnold’s bluff in January.

As Jamie Carragher said at the time: ‘I love Trent as a lad & a player, but his team would’ve told Real Madrid to bid & also would’ve known LFC would turn it down. It’s to try & cover themselves when he leaves for free.’

The claim was that Real, so desperate to expedite the process of waiting for Alexander-Arnold’s contract to expire, were willing to discuss the numbers involved in a January move. Liverpool rejected the approach out of hand, pointing to the four-pronged second half of a possibly trophy-littered season.

Alexander-Arnold promptly missed through injury the defeats in the FA and Carabao Cups while experiencing a significant drop-off in his Premier League form, typified by that miserable, error-strewn display against Manchester United.

It would be devastating if the final act of a 21-year relationship with the club was to come off with an injury in the Champions League tie with PSG which ultimately went to a penalty shootout he would likely have thrived in, but it does mean that nothing Alexander-Arnold has done on the pitch since January has been of any actual consequence and thus Liverpool turned down free money to keep a distraction.

Manchester United and Alejandro Garnacho
There is a palpable mutual desire to make things work between Garnacho, Ruben Amorim and Manchester United, which has not been the case for every player since the Portuguese’s appointment in November. The club and manager know they have an asset, who in turns wants to follow in the footsteps of his idol.

But the Cristiano Ronaldo redemption sequel casting is almost impossible to envisage for Garnacho, whose incompatibility in this system and environment is overriding his obvious talents.

That ability should not be downplayed. In this career-worst season at a failing club under a glaring spotlight he has 17 goals and assists at 20. It just feels like Manchester United could benefit more from the money a Garnacho sale could generate then they do from his presence.

Chelsea are interested and Napoli had an offer of around £40m rejected in January, with Manchester United citing a £70m valuation which has inevitably come crashing down in the months since.

Fulham and Andreas Pereira
“It would be really cool because of the way De Zerbi plays football,” Pereira said in November of a failed summer move to Marseille. “I was looking forward to it, but we’ll see now in January or at the end of the season if there will be a transfer or if I’ll stay at Fulham,” the Brazilian added in an interview during which he also spoke of “excitedly” meeting with his agent when he sees rumours linking him with a move.

It was a bizarre act of footballing self-immolation that Pereira both “deeply regretted” and apologised for, yet at the same time insisted was “neither accurate nor reflective of what I actually said”.

Marco Silva dropped the midfielder briefly but Pereira was back in the fold soon after and has appeared frequently since, but his output remains thoroughly and maddeningly inconsistent. Six players have more Premier League goals and assists for Fulham this season; Harry Wilson has as many despite playing less than half the football.

It was not Marseille who came knocking in the winter but Palmeiras, with £16m and then a reported £18.5m in hand. Fulham, who timed the exits of far better and more important players in Aleksandar Mitrovic and Joao Palhinha perfectly at no detriment to their performances, decided to keep an entirely replaceable player whose value will only depreciate as his contract enters its final year.

United’s Leny Yoro fires message after pathetic criticism from Thierry Henry

Manchester United defender Leny Yoro has sent a message following Thierry Henry’s unwarranted and pathetic criticism on Monday night.

Yoro, who worked under Henry in the French U23 set-up, was the subject of some bizarre remarks from the former Arsenal man, who singled him out for United’s 4-1 defeat at Newcastle on Sunday.

Henry highlighted how Yoro instinctively glanced at the linesman after Harvey Barnes netted Newcastle’s third goal. He claimed Yoro was hoping the official would save him from the embarrassment of his poor defending.

The 47-year-old then added that he “had never seen that before.”

Unsurprisingly, Henry’s comments didn’t sit well with United fans, who rallied around Yoro and slammed Henry for his harsh critique. Sky Sports swiftly took down the clip following the backlash. Jamie Carragher, the ex-Liverpool defender who appeared alongside Henry on the show, reposted the video with four crying emojis—only to delete it shortly after, a clear indication they realised just how distasteful their actions were.

Yoro chose to respond to the scrutiny on Tuesday night in a subdued fashion.

The 19-year-old took to social media, sharing a Bible verse over an image of himself kneeling on the St James’ Park pitch—sending a clear message that he remains unbothered by the negativity.

Inscribed in French in Yoro’s post was the message, “Do not be anxious about anything, but always ask God for what you need. And when you pray, ask for it with thanksgiving.”

The United defender cited Philippians 4:6.

Yoro has been one of the few positives for United during what has proven to be an immensely challenging season.

The £52million summer signing has slotted perfectly to life at Old Trafford and bar the Newcastle and Southampton games, has been almost flawless.

Yoro and his teammates are back in action on Thursday when they host Lyon in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie. Kick-off is at 20:00 BST.
