‘He can bite me’ – Man Utd icon Patrice Evra calls out Luis Suarez in shock MMA announcement

Manchester United legend Patrice Evra has called out ex-Liverpool star Luis Suarez during a shock announcement regarding his move into Mixed Martial Arts.

There is no love lost between Evra and Suarez. In 2011, the Uruguay international was charged by the Football Association with racial abuse following a clash with the former Man Utd left-back.

Suarez received an eight-game ban for this incident and in a later meeting between Man Utd and Liverpool, he refused to shake Evra’s hand before kick-off, while the Frenchman made a point of celebrating in front of his foe as he lapped up his side’s victory.

The current Inter Miami striker has had more than his fair share of controversy to deal with in his career, as he also found himself in hot water after he bit Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic and Juventus’ Giorgio Chiellini.

Now, Evra has had another dig at Suarez when announcing his surprise move into MMA.

43-year-old Evra made over 700 club appearances before he announced his retirement from football at the end of the 2018/19 campaign.

Evra has remained active post-retirement as he’s competed in Soccer Aid and he’s also revealed that he has been training in MMA ahead of a move into a new sport.

On Friday evening, Evra announced he will be making his PFL debut on an MMA card in Paris in May.

A PFL tweet revealed: “From the Pitch to the SmartCage. Former Manchester United and Les Bleus star Evra makes his PFL MMA DEBUT at PFL Paris on Friday 23rd May.”

Evra said: “BREAKING: I’m officially training for my first fight with @PFLEurope,” he wrote on X on Friday. “They will pick my opponent…

“They asked who I wanna face. I said: Luis Suárez. I’ll pay out of pocket. He can even bite me.”

He added: “You guys should know by now, I love this game too.

“I’ve performed on the world’s biggest stages, won every major trophy in football, but PFL Europe Paris will be an incredibly special night for me.

“I’ve been training alongside the best in the world for years and they’ll also tell you I’m ready for this. I’m going to put on a show at the Accor Arena on May 23, so come watch the spectacle.”

From Italy: United, City to go head-to-head to acquire Napoli “untouchable” who has dominated Serie A under Conte

With Casemiro and Christian Eriksen expected to depart at the end of the season, Manchester United are on the lookout for midfield reinforcements.

The Dane no longer has the legs to operate in Ruben Amorim’s high-intensity system and his contract is up in the summer and the Red Devils have no plans of offering him a new deal.

As for the Brazilian, he is experiencing an upturn in form and the head coach clearly likes him but INEOS want him gone on account of his humongous wages.

United have naturally been linked with multiple replacements including the likes of Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace and Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes.

Both are expected to cost a bomb, something the co-owners might not be in a position to pay and hence, they will be looking at more cost-effective options.

Midfielder required

Ederson of Atalanta has also emerged as a concrete option but signing him would require the club to win the Europa League. An easier option could be on the horizon if an Italian report is to be believed.

As per Area Napoli, Napoli’s Andrè-Frank Zambo Anguissa has emerged as a target with intermediaries offering his services to both the red and blue half of Manchester.

The Cameroonian’s current deal was set to expire in the summer of 2025 but the Naples outfit have triggered an extension and sporting director Giovanni Manna was recently in England to discuss the Victor Osimhen situation and might have asked about the 29-year-old midfielder as well.

“Andrè-Frank Zambo Anguissa could leave Napoli and return to the Premier League. His entourage – as learned by AreaNapoli.it – have offered him to Manchester City and Manchester United, in addition to Chelsea, for the next season.

“In the past tempted by an experience in Saudi Arabia and sounded out in recent months by Monaco and Marseille, the Cameroonian midfielder was close to being sold in the summer, although Aurelio De Laurentiis has protected himself by exercising the renewal option in favor of the blue club.

“The sporting director Giovanni Manna, in these days, would have stopped in Manchester – via London – to talk about some possible operations to set up with United (first of all Victor Osimhen, ed.).

Battle for Anguissa

“Who knows, maybe the occasion was also useful to talk about Anguissa, after the player’s intermediary has already taken the pulse of the Red Devils and Guardiola’s Citizens.”

He is Premier League-proven, having played at Fulham but has excelled since his move to the Serie A, with Antonio Conte terming him an “untouchable” due to his importance to his plans.

The Cameroon international has six goals and four assists this season and he can play both as a defensive midfielder as well as a central midfielder.

He ranks in the 93rd percentile for dribbles, and in the 96th percentile for duels won (as per fotmob), which highlights how effective he can be at both ends of the pitch.

Anguissa has a market value of €27 million, which is far less than United’s other targets. Whether INEOS actually go after him in the summer remains to be seen.

Man Utd: Amorim calls for ‘early’ transfer amid Cunha link – ‘Every player wants to play for United’

Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim highlighted the fact that “every player wants to play for Man Utd” as he addressed Marcus Rashford’s return from Aston Villa amid links to Wolves’ Matheus Cunha.

Speculation has been growing that Wolves forward Cunha represents Utd’s first big move of what should be a busy summer transfer window, with recent reports suggesting a deal is nearly done.

But the Man Utd boss was keen to focus on the immediate task at hand, which is winning games in the Premier League and being successful in the Europa League.

“We have to win every game, and every game is important. We have to put our standards, even without winning, really high.

“I feel the board understand the context and what we want to do. Our idea is really clear.

“I am critical because we are not winning games, and we are Manchester United and near the bottom.”

Inevitably, attention turned to the summer transfer window and the impending arrival of Cunha, but not before the Utd boss singled out Casemiro for praise and opened the door for Marcus Rashford to return to the fold.

“Everything can happen. Casemiro is the best example.

“He wasn’t playing and then you see the last games, he’s having a part, he’s performing quite well, he’s playing all the time.

“I like to change my mind, if they change my mind I like that, I want to put the best players in my team.”

On the subject of the transfer window, he continued: “What I feel is there are a lot of players that want to play for our club, if you look at our club in the moment with all the problems, changing coach, it looks a little bit of a problem but we have a clear idea and that’s the easiest part to explain for a player.

“It’s Manchester United, and every player wants to play for Manchester United.”

He also acknowledged there are decisions to be made when the likes of Rashford and Antony return from loan spells.

“All the players on loan will return, and then the club will decide what to do at the end of the season.

“The talent of Rashford, the talent of Antony, they all have talent. We are really happy because if you put players on loan, you want them to perform. That is good for us.”

While he didn’t commit to answering whether Cunha is set to join the Red Devils, he did hint that he has a clear idea on what needs doing in the transfer window as he teased some early moves.

“I could say this is a conversation for the end of the season, but I have an idea that is clear because we need to do things early.

“I will not say anything about Matheus because if I say one time, I will have to comment on every situation.

“I am focused on this season, and even in the next few games, could change our plan for next season.”

Amorim’s summer aspirations take a hit as fierce PL rivals “quietly confident” of winning the race for “special” attacker – report

Manchester United are desperate to recruit a proven goalscorer in the summer after seeing Rasmus Hojlund’s dismal performances this season.

Goals have been hard to come by and that is why the Red Devils are languishing in 14th position in the Premier League with the Dane netting only thrice.

Ruben Amorim is fed up with the 22-year-old and INEOS also want him gone, even if on loan. Multiple swap deal options are also on the club’s table.

But the co-owners seem to be fixated on Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap, who has 12 goals and two assists this season in the Premier League.

Delap chase

What has impressed United the most is the player’s confidence and his displays despite the Tractor Boys being destined for the drop.

Relegation will allow the Red Devils to land their man on the cheap but a lot of clubs are interested in the former Manchester City starlet.

Givemesport have claimed that Chelsea are quietly confident of winning the race for the 22-year-old as they have had him on their radar for longer and Enzo Maresca’s relation with the player could hold the key.

“Manchester United are being made to wait on whether Ipswich Town star Liam Delap sees them as his next club, at a time when Chelsea are quietly confident the deal is already swinging in their favour.

Chelsea in pole position

“Chelsea have had Delap on their radar longer than Manchester United, and internally they believe they have got the edge. Their early interest shows clear, defined strategy and boss Enzo Maresca is keen on the deal, having known him from their time at Manchester City.”

His relatively low cost, affordable wages and resale value makes him the perfect fit for both clubs with INEOS focussing on young, Premier League-proven stars instead of spending big-money to bring in mercenaries like in the past.

Whether the 20-time English league champions can stave off competition from the Blues for the England U21 international remains to be seen.

More affordable options like Jean-Philippe Mateta are also on the club’s radar while Europa League success could open the doors to a possible deal for Victor Osimhen.

United to raid Serie A giants for midfield monster who has excelled alongside former United star – report

Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a move for Napoli’s midfield general Stanislav Lobotka as Ruben Amorim looks for reinforcements in the middle of the park.

According to reports in Italy, United have joined Barcelona and Paris Saint Germain in pursuit of the Slovakian, who wears the number 68 shirt for Antonio Conte’s side.

TMW write that Lobotka “could leave in the summer” as it is Napoli’s last chance to make some real money from the player, who turns 31 at the end of November.

Barcelona have “already made it known” that they are keen on him, and now PSG and United have also “expressed their desire to sit down and talk about the situation.”

For Napoli’s part, there could be a willingness to sell in a bid to “rejuvenate” their midfield and they may look for a replacement on lower wages than the €3.5m a year they currently pay the 30-year-old.

TMW claim that the Partenopei currently value Lobotka at €40m but indicate that there is likely to be room for manoeuvre on this figure.

The news outlet write that he has been “one of Napoli’s best players in the last three seasons” and note that last season “he was one of the few to survive a disastrous year” which saw the club move through three coaches in one campaign.

The Naples club signed Scott McTominay from United last year and the Scot has reached new heights in Italy, rubbing salt in the wounds of his struggling former employers.

TMW also quote the player himself who, speaking to Radio CRC, sounds happy with his current situation at Napoli. He said: “Every day I work to help the team, I try to be a leader on the pitch.

“When we have the ball I try to give everyone a hand to win the game. We are a really good team, both on the pitch and especially off the pitch, this is very important to me.”

It’s certainly the kind of mentality which would likely appeal to Amorim, but his quotes don’t read like a player preparing to depart his club.

United are sure to hand the Portuguese a new central midfielder this summer, with 33-year-old Christian Eriksen set to depart Old Trafford and question marks surrounding Casemiro despite his recent resurgence in form.

Amorim needs all the help he can get from the United board as he looks to build a team capable of bouncing back to the top level after this historically bad season comes to an end.

Atalanta’s Ederson is another player under consideration, and transfer guru Fabrizio Romano yesterday confirmed that he is top of the club’s wishlist to beef up their midfield.

Amorim drops injury shocker, says talisman could be out for the rest of the season

Manchester United are gearing up for their Premier League clash against Bournemouth on Sunday with Ruben Amorim expected to make quite a few changes to his starting lineup.

That is because the Red Devils will face Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League semi-finals next Thursday and the head coach has already said in the recent past that he will prioritise that over the English top-flight games.

Just as in the Wolverhampton Wanderers game, Amorim is likely to include quite a few academy youngsters in the team. But during the press conference, he stopped short of saying he will make multiple changes.

Instead he claimed his full focus is on beating the Cherries and for that he will select a strong team.

Team selection

“I don’t talk about Bilbao, I focus on Bournemouth. They way they perform against Bournemouth can change my mind for the next game. We need to win, that is all.”

“The focus is we have to face it and we need to have that feeling every game here is important and we have to win every game, important not to lose. Of course, you see the context.

“We are going to face this game with the best team, we had a full week to prepare, some of the players didn’t play against Wolves so recover the players is not a bad thing. I will try to prepare for this game and try and win the next one.”

But he added that he will have to prioritise if the club are to end the season on a high even though throwing too many youngsters into the deep end might not be the best for their development.

“It matters a lot, what I’m saying with our current squad you have to take a risk and choose the priority. I want the best players in every game and sometimes it’s hard for me to take a risk in every game but in this moment we have to make choices and I want to protect the young players.

“I don’t want to put everybody together in the same game so they can’t perform, I want to help the club and I am trying to help.”

He pointed to the fact that Casemiro, who was in the fringes, impressed him so much when given the chance that now he has become an integral member of the squad.

“Everything can happen. Casemiro is the best example. He wasn’t playing and then you see the last games he’s having a part, he’s performing quite well, he’s playing all the time, I like to change my mind, if they change my mind I like that, I want to put the best players in my team.”

Dalot injury

As far as injuries are concerned, the Red Devils have been struck by a huge blow with Diogo Dalot potentially ruled out for the rest of the season.

“Diogo Dalot is out. We don’t know how long he is going to be out but he is out for these next games. Amad is near, De Ligt is near. Ayden is not ready.

“There is a possibility (Dalot will miss the rest of the season) but we will see week by week. He has something in his calf muscle. He had a sequence of games he played all the time. We tried to manage but we had to protect players and Dalot felt something.”

The Portuguese has hardly missed a game this season and has been an ever-present feature, either on the left or on the right and now, Amorim will have to tweak his squad ahead of the season-defining clash against Athletic.

Naturally, he was also asked about Rasmus Hojlund’s form with the Dane being a huge disappointment this term. The 22-year-old has managed a mere three Premier League goals all season.

Once again, Amorim did not criticise him and claimed he is still improving and the goals will come.

On Rasmus

“A striker needs to score goals. We try to help him and he is trying really hard and he wants things so bad he makes it worse He created one situation against Wolverhampton and he is improving the small things. The goal will come.”

“But I showed him and the team that he’s so much better in connections, in one against ones and he’s improving with the small things. He needs to focus on that and the goal will appear. We try to explain how to improve.”

The 20-time English league champions have not won a Premier League game since the international break and Amorim was asked how the board have reacted to the team’s dismal form and whether they still have confidence in his methods.

“We have to win every game and every game is important. We have to put our standards, even without winning, really high. I feel the board understand the context and what we want to do. Our idea is really clear. I am critical because we are not winning games and we are Manchester United and near the bottom.”

Summer plans

The topic shifted to the summer window and the Portuguese was asked about the recent links with Matheus Cunha of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

“I will not say anything about Matheus because if I say one time, I will have to say it for any situation that is yes or no so I will not comment about that.

“You could say this is a conversation for the end of the week, but I have an idea which is clear because we have to do things early. But things can change until the end of the season.”

He further claimed that whatever happens, playing for a club like Manchester United is a huge pull for players.

“It’s Manchester United. What I feel is there are a lot of players that want to play for our club, if you look at our club in the moment with all the problems, changing coach, it looks a little bit of a problem but we have a clear idea and that’s the easiest part to explain for a player. It’s Manchester United and every player wants to play for Manchester United.”

When asked about the future of Marcus Rashford, Amorim explained, “All the players on loan will return and then the club will decide what to do at the end of the season. The talent of Rashford, the talent of Antony, they all have talent. We are really happy because if you put players on loan you want them to perform. That is good for us.”

Inter Milan hold talks with Amorim favourite who has decided to leave United this summer – report

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof is reportedly attracting interest from a number of clubs, including Inter Milan, heading into the summer.

The United hierarchy are preparing for a big summer with plans already underway to hand Ruben Amorim a number of top talents to strengthen his squad, who miserably find themselves 14th in the Premier League table.

At the same time, many players are set to depart Old Trafford after failing to impress Amorim. Their exits should help clear the wage bill and raise funds for more arrivals.

One such star is Lindelof, who is in the final few weeks of his contract at United.

The 30-year-old, who joined the Red Devils in 2017 under Jose Mourinho, has been handed limited opportunities by Amorim despite their intriguing connection. The pair spent four years as teammates at Benfica.

The Sweden international has started just four Premier League games this term and received backlash for his performances in recent defeats to Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

According to CaughtOffside, United are prepared to let Lindelof leave as a free agent at the end of the campaign as they will not offer him a new deal.

Interestingly, it seems he is still highly rated across England and Europe. It is claimed that as many as eight clubs are interested in the centre-back and have made contact to explore his signing.

Champions League semi-finalists Inter are thought to be among his suitors.

However, the Sweden captain wants more gametime and it is difficult to see him playing regularly under Simone Inzaghi, who is blessed with top defenders like Alessandro Bastoni, Benjamin Pavard, and Stefan de Vrij.

Juventus and his former club Benfica are also monitoring the situation but the outlet underline that Lindelof’s priority is to continue in the Premier League.

In England, he has been approached by Fulham, West Ham United, Everton, and Wolves.

“It was heartbreaking … I’m gone”: Ryan Giggs breaks silence on tragic fallout from abuse charges

Former Manchester United star Ryan Giggs has opened up on the heartbreak of having to resign from the Wales national team and miss the chance to lead out his team at Euro 2020.

The 51 year old is currently sporting director at Salford City, the club he owns with numerous other former United players such as Gary Neville.

Giggs has played more games than any other player in the history of the club, amassing a mammoth 963 appearances. He also won 13 Premier Leagues, two Champions Leagues and four FA Cups during his career at United.

He later became interim manager after David Moyes was sacked in 2014 and then Louis van Gaal’s assistant for two years.

Giggs was appointed manager of Wales in 2018 but had to step down in 2022 after facing legal issues, that he was later cleared of in court.

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel (via The Daily Mail), he revealed his disappointment of missing out on the historic moment for Wales.

“Yeah, I mean, it was heartbreaking. It was obviously a very difficult time because I’m watching it on TV.”

Wales finished second behind Italy in their group and were eventually knocked out by Denmark 4-0 in the last 16.

Giggs also recounted when his side scored a vital late goal in the tournament and the mixed emotions that he felt as a consequence.

“And I’m like…who did we score against? We scored against, I can’t remember if it was Turkey. We scored late on, and I’m jumping around the front room, and then all of a sudden, I look at the TV, and it’s all the staff and players jumping in the dugout, and I’m gone.”

Ferdinand questioned if he felt it should have been him and Giggs admitted, “yeah, a bit of that. It was a difficult time.”

Giggs was in charge throughout the successful qualifying campaign but due to his arrest on assault charges, he was unavailable to manage at the tournament.

He has not returned to football management since but has suggested in past interviews that this is something he aspires to do in the future.

In November 2024, she received her first official senior call-up for USA, making her international debut in April 2025.

How Ruben responded to transfer questions

Skip to Main NavigationSkip to content

Old Trafford.

Friday 25 April 2025 14:30

Ruben Amorim was asked several questions about Manchester United’s plans for the summer transfer window during his latest press conference at Carrington.

Our head coach sat down with reporters inside the Jimmy Murphy Centre to preview this Sunday’s trip to Bournemouth in the Premier League.

After detailing the latest team news, including updates on Diogo Dalot and Amad, Ruben addressed speculation in the press and the performance of our players out on loan. Here, you can read a full Q&A…

Hi Ruben. Team news to start off with. Are there any positive updates on Amad and is Diogo okay?
“No, Diogo is out. We don’t know how long he is going to be out. But he is out for these next games, we will see until the end. Amad is near, Matta [Matthijs de Ligt] is near, but the rest is at the same pace. Ayden [Heaven] is not ready, so I think that is it.”

With Diogo, what’s happened and do you think there’s a chance he could miss the rest of the season?
“There is that possibility but I don’t know, we will check week by week, because he works really hard, he can recover quite well, so we will see.”

Are you able to say what Diogo has done?
“He has a problem with his muscle in his calf. He had a sequence of games, he played all the time. We tried to manage but some of the players have to play a lot of minutes and we have to protect the ones that we think are not so ready to copy with that, but Dalot felt something.”

Part one: Press conference v Bournemouth Video

Part one: Press conference v Bournemouth

Press conference part one | Ruben answers questions on Diogo Dalot’s injury, Amad’s return, Matheus Cunha and more…

You’ve said all along that you’ve been learning. We all know the most important games now are the two against Athletic Club, so what will you learn from Bournemouth?
“The focus is that we have to face it and we need to have that feeling that every game is here is important, and we have to win every game, because that is a feeling that’s really important not to lose. Of course, you can see the context. But I think we are going to face this game with the best team, because we had a full week to prepare, some of the players did not play against Wolverhampton, so sometimes if you recover so much of the players it is a bad thing. So I will try to manage everything to win this game and to prepare for the next one.”

The window is nearly here. Do you know the players you would like to keep and the players you would like to leave?
“Yeah, you can say, I could say… of course this is a conversation for the end of the week [season] but I have an idea that is clear because we have to do things early, but things can change until the end of the season.”

Matheus Cunha’s name is repeatedly mentioned. Is that the kind of player you are looking to attract?
“I will say nothing about Matheus because if I say one time, I will have to say for any situation that is yes or no, so I will not comment about that. We are focused on this season and even the way we are going to prepare the next season could change in these games, so it is hard to predict what is going to happen in the future.”

Are you finding it as easy to attract players? You may not have Champions League football, so how big an attraction are you?
“It is Manchester United. What I feel is that there’s a lot of players that want to play for our club. I know that if you look at our club in the moment, it looks like, sometimes, with all the problems, with the staff, with people going, changing coach, the results, it looks a little bit of a problem in the moment but we have a clear idea and that is the easiest part to explain to a player. And then it is Manchester United. Everybody wants to play for Manchester United.”

Ruben, you hinted that your mind is made up on certain people with regards to what happens next in the future. Have they still got time to change your mind?
“Everything can happen. Casemiro is the best example. He was a player who wasn’t playing and then, you see the last games, he is having a part and he is performing quite well, he is playing all the time, so I am not the kind of coach… I like to change my mind. If they change my mind, I am really happy with that. I just want to win and to put the best players in my team.”

You’ve played against Bournemouth already. When you look at the challenge this weekend, considering the matches you have coming, how big a challenge is this Sunday?
“It is massive because one thing is they press a lot. He has something to fight for in this moment with European nights and we know the quality of the squad, of the manager, the way they play, the way they press, the one against one they have, the mobility of Evanilson, Kluivert, Semenyo, so it is going to be a really tough match and we have to be really focused on this game. Because, here, every game is really important and we need to win games in the Premier League. But, of course, in certain details, we have to focus not just on this game, but also the next one.”

EXCLUSIVE MOUNT INTERVIEW | Mason is determined to find consistency, and Europa League success…

I was just going to ask about the focus of the players on the Premier League. You still have a chance to finish in the top half of the table. How do you keep the players from being distracted by Europe?
“I don’t talk about Bilbao during the week, I just talk about Bournemouth and the way they perform against Bournemouth can change my mind for the next game, so they are fighting for a place in the next match. If you look at our table, in the last game, I think we were the better team, we had some situations to score a goal, it was tough to deal with that loss so we need to win, that is all.”

How is Rasmus Hojlund’s confidence and is that a challenge in itself, trying to manage a player’s confidence?
“A striker, we have talked about this a lot of times. A striker needs to score goals. We try to help him and he is trying really hard. Sometimes he wants some things really bad and it’s worse. But I show him and all the team, he is so much better in connection, in one against one, he created situations against Wolverhampton, he is improving in the small things and he needs to focus on that. The goals will appear. We are just trying to explain how to improve.”

With Marcus Rashford, when his loan runs out, do you expect him back here for pre-season?
“All the players that are on loan, they will return and then the club will decide what to do at the end of the season.”

Are you pleased?
“Yeah of course, of course, of course. The talent of Rashford, the talent of Antony, all these players, they have to put that on the team. So we are really happy because if you put a player on loan, the best thing for us is for them to perform and they are performing.”

The Europa League is your priority, you’ve said that. Does that suggest it doesn’t matter to you where you finish in the league? Is that the case?
“No, it matters a lot. What I am saying is that with our current squad, you have to take a risk and to choose a priority. It is impossible. I want to put the best starting XI in every game and sometimes it is so hard for me to take a risk in the Premier League. Because sometimes the games in the Premier League are tougher than the Europa League, but in this moment we have to make choices. I also want to protect the young players. I don’t want to put everyone together in the same game in a way that they cannot perform. I just try to choose the best thing to help the club. The most important thing is the club at this moment and I am trying to cope with everything.”

You’ve been more critical of your own performance than anyone else. Do you think that when the owners come to evaluate the next season and what they want to do this summer, do you think they will be sympathetic to the issues you’ve had to face?
“I think the best thing is that conversation connecting with that feeling we have to win every game and every game is important. So we have to put our standards, even without winning, really, really hard. And I feel every day that the board understands the context and especially understands what we want to do, that our idea is really clear. I am critical because we are not winning games, like everyone can understand, we are Manchester United and we are near the bottom of the table, so we need to be critical, no matter what happened. No matter if we lost one game from a free-kick and missed some goals inside of the small box. That doesn’t matter in the end. That is the feeling that I want inside of Carrington.”

Part two of the press conference will be published at 22:30 BST on Saturday.
