Hojlund finally breaks his duck to help United rescue a point late on vs Bournemouth

Manchester United earned a valuable point away from home as they drew 1-1 with AFC Bournemouth.

Despite some determined attacking build-ups, Man United did little with the goal-scoring opportunities they created, proving lucky to grab a stoppage time goal to avoid almost certain defeat.

In the opening minutes, the home side dominated, beating United to almost every loose ball and camping within their final third.

Bournemouth almost took the lead in the third minute when Dango Ouattara’s cross flew just past Evanilson, letting United off the hook for what would have been an almost-guaranteed goal.

Only after 10 minutes did United spark to life, even if only for a brief moment. Kobbie Mainoo drove forward, firing a shot into the keeper’s gloves.

16 minutes in, United were on the attack again. Alejandro Garnacho took a shot from the edge of the box that veered just wide of the far post.

After Garnacho was fouled at the back, United received a free-kick in their own half. Unfortunately, Andre Onana decided to play a short ball out to Luke Shaw, placing him under unnecessary pressure.

Once his ball was played to Dorgu, it didn’t take long for the home side to intercept, especially thanks to their high press.

Evanilson laid off the ball to Antoine Semenyo, who hammered it into the back of the net with a thunderous shot. 1-0 to Bournemouth after 23 minutes.

Only 10 minutes from the break, United sprang to life. Following a threatening corner from Bruno Fernandes, Noussair Mazraoui took a shot from the edge of the box that was blocked. Garnacho pounced on the rebound; however, his shot was kept out by an alert goalkeeper.

Minutes later, Garnacho came close to scoring. He got on the end of a counter-attack, attempting to chip the goalkeeper, only for him to put the ball out for a corner.

While nothing came from the corner, Semenyo wrestled Harry Maguire to the ground, raising questions about a penalty. After some deliberation, the referee decided against a spot kick – a strange decision given how aggressively the Bournemouth player brought Maguire to the ground.

On the stroke of half-time, Garnacho looked threatening on the edge of the box yet again, only to fire his effort wide. 1-0, the match remained as both teams made their way down the tunnel. United manager Ruben Amorim no doubt needed to instil some confidence into his side as they sought to claw their way back into the match.

Right after the restart, Semenyo almost doubled his tally as his shot soared past the left post. It was a stark reminder to United’s defence to stay alert.

Seven minutes in, Onana was almost caught off guard by an incoming cross, only to punch the ball out for a corner.

In the 55th minute, United sparked a rare counter, with Garnacho passing into the centre where Fernandes hit his shot wide. Still, the flag was raised for offside, meaning the movement was in vain either way.

Two minutes later, Dorgu was booked for a late clash with Adam Smith. It was a harsh decision given that there was little that the wing-back could do to avoid contact.

On the hour mark, Ouattara came close to doubling the home side’s lead, with his shot reverberating off the crossbar.

Five minutes later, Amorim decided that the time had come to breathe fresh life into his lineup by introducing some changes. Manuel Ugarte, Mason Mount, and Victor Lindelof came on for Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo, and Harry Maguire.

With little over 20 minutes to play, United received an advantage as Bournemouth went down to ten men. Evanilson, who was originally given a yellow card, saw his booking upgraded to red upon VAR review. Upon closer inspection, it was evident that Evanilson committed a dangerously high challenge on Mazraoui.

After 75 minutes of play, Mazraoui was replaced by Chido Obi-Martin.

Moments after coming on, Obi came within inches of scoring when he tapped a pass from Garnacho goalwards from the centre of the box. It was a promising start to his cameo.

Six minutes from time, Mount came close to scoring when he received the ball in the box only for his effort to be blocked by a rigid defence. The subsequent corner was comfortably caught by the keeper.

Four minutes later, Mount came close again. A cut back from Dorgu found the midfielder in the box, whose shot was deflected out for a corner. Shaw got on the end of the corner, taking a shot from the edge of the box that drifted wide.

A minute into nine minutes of stoppage time, Obi came close to scoring again when his shot was tipped over the bar. Yet again, United failed to penetrate the home side’s defence.

Moments after coming on for Dorgu, Christian Eriksen took a speculative shot that was blocked with the ball falling to Fernandes, whose shot hit the outside of the net. Still, United couldn’t end their goal drought.

Fernandes was yet again the leader of United’s attack when he carried the ball into the box, only for the keeper to collect it.

Five minutes into stoppage time, United found the goal they had been desperately seeking. Fernandes passed to Shaw on the left flank, who threaded the ball to Garnacho in a crowded box. Garnacho laid the ball off to Hojlund, who scored from close range with his first touch.

It was an unexepcted conclusion to the match for United, with the struggling Hojlund finding the back of the net to rescue his team from defeat just minutes before the final whistle.

Hopefully, this comeback could inspire Amorim’s team ahead of their Europa League semi-final showdown with the high-flying Athletic Club.

Rasmus Hojlund’s very late equaliser against Bournemouth gave Manchester United’s tireless away fans something to cheer in the south-coast sunshine on Sunday afternoon, at the end of a difficult 90 minutes for Ruben Amorim’s Reds.

For much of the contest, it appeared that United were heading for another Premier League defeat, but a red card for Cherries forward Evanilson helped us turn the tide in the final quarter of the game, where we created numerous chances.

Come full-time, a potentially dark day had been transformed into a quietly positive one, thanks to Hojlund’s goal, with United’s fighting spirit in strong evidence and other areas of the pitch offering some notes of optimism ahead of Thursday’s huge European game against Athletic Club.

From Luke Shaw’s return to Hojlund’s potentially momentum-shifting goal, read on for our nuggets of analysis from Sunday’s dramatic game…

Rasmus Hojlund’s late, late show could be a turning point in the player’s season.

HOPE FOR HOJLUND

Rasmus Hojlund will score many, many better goals in his career. He will score more important ones, too. Salvaging a draw at Bournemouth to solidify our grip on 14th place in the league is not exactly cause to get the Dom P. on ice.

But that 96th-minute poke could be a vital moment in United’s season, and the player’s, of course. It’s well over a month since Rasmus’s last strike (an excellent opener in our 3-0 win at Leicester) and what impact could this simple tap-in have on his confidence ahead of the biggest week or our season? The Dane is one of the top scorers in this year’s Europa League, don’t forget, with five. Let’s hope there’s a few more still to come.

SHAW RETURNS

It’s more than 14 months since Luke Shaw last started a Manchester United game – though the left-footed defender did start in the Euro 2024 final for England during that period of domestic absence. Shaw’s return to availability could scarcely come at a better time for head coach Ruben Amorim, who is currently without Diogo Dalot and Matthijs de Ligt, just days before that crunch Europa League semi-final first leg away to Athletic Club of Bilbao.

Shaw would concede he is not up to full capacity yet, with just a few substitute appearances preceding the Bournemouth game. But he showed glimpses of what he can offer on Sunday: huge experience, unflappable composure on the ball and, of course, those trademark barrelling runs and crosses down the left flank. He also completed the game, suggesting he is physically almost back to his best. If United are to earn that much-thirsted-for second trip to Bilbao later in May, you sense Shaw’s comeback might be a key factor.

Luke Shaw’s first start in a long time offered a note of encouragement on a difficult day in Dorset.

MAZRAOUI CONVINCES OUT WIDE

No United player had made more appearances for United this season ahead of Sunday’s trip to Bournemouth than Diogo Dalot, so the recent news that the Portuguese defender is set to be absent for the next few games came as a significant blow for the team.

Dalot’s strength and consistency in that right wing-back role has given Amorim one less thing to worry about in recent months, but ahead of our biggest game of the season on Thursday, Dalot’s absence presents a real quandary.

But in Bournemouth, the return of Shaw allowed Leny Yoro to slot in at right centre-back, freeing Noussair Mazraoui to step out to the right flank. And the Morocco international was solid, looking positive and aggressive in attack and committed in defence. There was even a remarkable seal-like flurry of head bobbles during the first half, which drew some gasps around the stadium – and even the press box.

If Diogo Dalot does miss both games against Athletic Club, Mazraoui seems an ideal replacement.

HAS AMORIM FOUND HIS NO.10s?

The result might not have gone our way on the south coast, but there was some encouragement, in my opinion, via the performances of Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo in the no.10 roles that are so pivotal in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system.

Garnacho came close three times in the first half alone, while we saw more of Mainoo’s fabled close control inside the penalty area and within the final third. The creativity of that pair means Bruno Fernandes can roam a little more freely between defence and attack. Goals have not been flowing recently, and nor did they in Dorset, but there was some promise here in flashes.

The boss seems to have settled on using Mainoo higher up the pitch, in contrast to his roles for both club and country last season.

SOME CLUES TO THURSDAY’S LINE-UP?

Some Reds expected Amorim to rotate for this fixture, resting some of his key players as he did at Newcastle recently. Casemiro, for example, did not feature at St James’ Park, and then four days later, played all 120 minutes against Lyon, ultimately deciding the game in extra-time with three big contributions to all of United’s crucial late goals.

But Ruben went something close to full strength against Bournemouth, starting Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro and Harry Maguire, just a few days before that trip to the Basque Country. Pre-match, the boss also mentioned that Mason Mount and Manuel Ugarte were key players in his thinking, hinting that they were named on the bench with Thursday’s fixture in mind. Upon 65 minutes, Casemiro, Mainoo and Maguire were replaced, suggesting they, too, could be key figures in Bilbao.

Team news: Amorim makes five changes

Sunday 27 April 2025 12:45

Ruben Amorim has made five changes for Manchester United’s Premier League away game at AFC Bournemouth.

The Reds take on the Cherries at 14:00 BST on Sunday, just four days before the crucial Europa League semi-final first leg against Athletic Club.

With that fixture in mind, it was expected that Amorim might rest specific players, but the Portuguese has named a very strong XI to start on the south coast.

Will Ruben rotate at Bournemouth? Video

AMORIM Q&A | The boss is asked about Dalot’s injury and how the Bilbao trip will impact team selection at Bournemouth…

Luke Shaw makes his first United start since February of last year, with the England international expected to step into a left-sided role in Amorim’s three-man central defence.

Diogo Dalot is absent with injury, as reported on Friday, so Noussair Mazraoui and Patrick Dorgu are likely to share the duties at wing-back.

In midfield, Casemiro returns after missing last Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford, after playing such a pivotal role in the dramatic extra-time comeback against Lyon in the Europa League. Bruno Fernandes also returns to the starting line-up, where he will partner the Brazilian.

In attack, Rasmus Hojlund once again leads the line, with Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo occupying the two no.10 roles just behind.

Victor Lindelof, Harry Amass, Tyler Fredricson, Christian Eriksen and Manuel Ugarte drop to the bench, after starting the Wolves game.

UNITED LINE-UP

Starting XI: Onana; Yoro, Maguire, Shaw; Mazraoui, Casemiro, Fernandes (c), Dorgu; Mainoo, Garnacho; Hojlund.

Substitutes: Heaton, Amass, Evans, Fredricson, Lindelof, Eriksen, Mount, Ugarte, Obi.

Pundit predictions: Who will start at Bournemouth?

0

Sunday 27 April 2025 10:00

Manchester United return to Premier League action this weekend with a trip to the south coast to face Bournemouth.

As head coach Ruben Amorim has admitted himself, there will certainly be half an eye on Thursday’s Europa League first-leg meeting with Athletic Club, but our contest at the Vitality Stadium is the primary focus for now.

We received the unfortunate news this week that Diogo Dalot faces a spell on the sidelines with a calf problem, joining a handful of other Reds in the treatment room. Could that, along with our important upcoming midweek encounter, see a shaken-up XI to face the Cherries?

Keep scrolling to read the predictions of United legend Sammy McIlroy, and find out how to submit your own…

SAMMY MCILROY’S PREDICTIONS

United: Onana; Mazraoui, Maguire, Yoro; Dorgu, Ugarte, Fernandes, Amass; Mainoo, Garnacho; Hojlund.

Man of the Match: Alejandro Garnacho.

Correct score: Bournemouth 1 United 2.

First scorer: Alejandro Garnacho.

That’s how MUTV pundit and Reds icon Sammy McIlroy sees the 14:00 BST kick-off going at the Vitality Stadium.

The former forward is throwing everything behind Garnacho making the difference against Andoni Iraola’s side, and it’s easy to see why, with the Argentina international boasting two goal involvements in his last three outings.

McIlroy sees Academy theme continuing, lining Harry Amass up for his third Premier League start and tipping fellow Carrington graduate Kobbie Mainoo to be given the nod from the beginning for the second consecutive game – all on the way to three points for Amorim’s men on Sunday afternoon.

PLAY UNITED PREDICTIONS

Don’t agree with some of McIlroy’s choices? You can make your own picks with our United Predictions game.

You have until 12:45 BST to name your starting XI and right up until the referee’s first whistle to select your Man of the Match, first scorer and result options.

United’s plans of shipping out unwanted star in danger of collapsing as possible season-ending injury is confirmed

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has confirmed that Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford sustained an injury that may rule him out for the rest of the season.

Rashford missed Aston Villa’s 3-0 FA Cup semifinal defeat against Crystal Palace after picking an injury during training earlier in the week.

In Rashford’s absence, Ollie Watkins led the line for Villa but was unable to be impactful as Eberechi Eze’s goal and a double from Ismaila Sarr secured Palace a spot in the final, where they will face either Manchester City or Nottingham Forest.

Speaking after the game [as quoted by Birmingham World], Emery gave an update on Rashford and why he was not available.

“He is injured. He got injured this week and yesterday we did a test.”

“It is his hamstring. We are going to try to test him each match but he is injured and probably some weeks he won’t be available.”

Rashford joined Villa in January after falling out of favour under Ruben Amorim and has had an impact at Villa Park.

In his 17 appearances for the club, he has scored four goals and provided six assists. With just a month of action and four games left – including a trip to Old Trafford on the final day – there is a very good chance that Rashford’s season is already over.

Rashford wouldn’t have been available to face United anyway, as he was ineligible to play against his parent club.

Looking ahead, Rashford’s injury is a setback for both Villa and the player, with a decision about his future looming. Villa have the option to make his stay permanent for £40m, but with fewer opportunities for him to make a strong case, it also leaves less room for Emery to fully assess him.

Other potential suitors may also be deterred by the injury, which could seriously hinder United’s efforts to offload him in the summer.

Meanwhile, United are back in action on Sunday when they go away to the Vitality Stadium to face Bournemouth.

Man Utd transfers: Amorim targets two Real Betis ‘sacrifices’ for £25.5m Antony ‘discount’

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is eyeing two Real Betis players as the Red Devils ‘propose a swap deal’ for Antony.

The Brazilian winger left Old Trafford for Real Betis on loan in January having not made a Premier League start under Erik ten Hag or Amorim this season.

And the 25-year-old, who’s been criticised and mocked throughout his time at Old Trafford having failed to live up to the mammoth £81m transfer fee United paid Ajax for his services in the summer of 2023, has thrived in La Liga.

He’s got five goals and two assists in 17 matches in all competitions with the Man Utd loanee contributing towards Real Betis’ push towards potential Champions League qualification, and the Spanish side are keen to retain his services next term.

The Spanish side’s sporting director Manu Fajardo said recently: “Here, we work on devalued players, analysing data from players who have reached very high moments and peaks, but who for various reasons have significantly decreased their performances.

“In Antony’s case, he has performed since minute one at Betis.

“The player quickly integrated into the project and has demonstrated spectacular performances since his arrival.”

Real Betis star Isco added: “We hope that Antony will remain at the club, but in football, nothing can be taken for granted. We need to do crowdfunding to bring Antony in!”

A report in Spain earlier this week claimed that United have ‘asked’ for 19-year-old left winger Jesus Rodriguez – who’s got five goals and four assists in 39 appearances this season – in a ‘swap deal’ which would see the Spanish side given a ‘discount’ on Antony’s £42m asking price.

And now a separate report claims Amorim is also looking at 23-year-old midfielder Johnny Cardoso with a view to including him in part of the deal that would see Antony move to Betis on a permanent transfer.

The USMNT international has made 59 appearances for Betis since his £4m move from Brazilian side Internacional in January 2024 and is currently valued by Transfermarkt at €20m [£17m].

With Rodriguez valued at €10m [£8.5m], United could land both players as well as £16.5m for the sale of Antony.

The report on Cardoso adds:

‘Despite the rumors, the player himself has insisted that he is “happy and comfortable” in Seville. At the moment he doesn’t think about an exit, although his name sounds strong in the English football offices. Everything will be decided when the season ends. If Betis manages to close the course with good results, it will be time to sit down and evaluate offers.

‘For now, Cardoso remains focused on the present. But United’s interest shows that its growth has crossed borders.’

United eyeing surprise swoop for Mourinho favourite, cut-price deal on the cards due to contract disagreement – report

Manchester United’s hunt for an able replacement for struggling goalkeeper Andre Onana has now taken them to the Serie A, more specifically, AS Roma.

Tuttomercatoweb have claimed that the Red Devils are among the clubs circling for Mile Svilar, whose contract is up in 2027, and both Roma and the goalie have yet to agree new terms.

United fans will remember the goalkeeper from his days at Benfica, when Jose Mourinho was manager and Svilar accidentally helped the Red Devils score in both legs of their Champions League group stage game.

The 25-year-old currently earns €1,280,000 per season (via capology), and he wants around €4,000,000 per season to bring him up to speed with other big names in the Roma squad.

Svilar contract issue

This could allow suitors to take advantage of the situation with Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Manchester City also looking at the Serbian ace.

The former Benfica ace has kept 16 clean sheets in all competitions and has been a pivotal role with the Serie A giants only three points behind the Champions League places.

But should both parties fail to agree a new deal, Roma remain open to the possibility of a separation, and are eyeing a hefty price from his sale.

All of which will count as profit as the goalkeeper was signed on a free on the insistence of former manager Mourinho, who has remained an admirer.

“The topic of Mile Svilar’s renewal continues to dominate the spotlight at Roma. The Belgian goalkeeper, who has become a symbol for the fans, is considered a key figure for the club’s future, but negotiations for the extension of his contract (currently expiring in 2027 and worth around 1 million per year) are still far from being concluded.

United ready to take advantage

“The entourage’s request is around 4 million euros per year, bonuses included, a figure in line with the salaries of the big names in the squad. Discussions are ongoing, but at the moment there is no talk of termination clauses: the focus is on duration, salary and technical role.

“The club is willing to reward Svilar’s performance, but the gap between supply and demand remains wide. Signing a five-year contract would be a crucial choice for the 25-year-old, who should have full faith in the Ranieri and Ghisolfi project.

“In the meantime, several top European clubs are interested in him, including Manchester United , Bayern Munich , Chelsea and Manchester City , attracted by his young and reliable profile. Roma, it is reported, while showing openness to the renewal, does not exclude the possibility of a transfer.”

United have other names on their radar as well and any deal for a goalkeeper will depend on Champions League qualification as otherwise Onana’s future seems secure for now.

Man Utd transfer: Romano reveals new ‘discussions’ for ‘fantastic signing’ deemed ‘perfect Amorim player’

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Manchester United have identified a “fantastic signing” for Ruben Amorim with “discussions” ongoing.

The Red Devils need to be busy in this summer’s transfer window as huge improvements are required with the Premier League giants languishing deep in the bottom half of the table.

Amorim has struggled since replacing Erik ten Hag as Man Utd are 15th in our calendar year Premier League table.

United’s head coach is working with a squad that’s not suited to his preferred style of play and upgrades are required in several positions this summer.

It is being widely reported that Wolves standout Matheus Cunha is on Man Utd’s radar and Romano claims they also “really appreciate” Atalanta and Brazil centre-midfielder Ederson.

“Ruben Amorim, in a press conference, didn’t want to confirm or deny anything. He was smiling, saying, ‘If I have to confirm or deny for Matheus Cunha, I have to do the same for all the other players during the summer.’ So Amorim didn’t want to comment, but also because he knows that Cunha is very close to joining Man Utd. Work in progress,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.

READ: Huge Man Utd transfer twist as ‘deal cannot move forward’ despite ‘basic agreement’

“Another Brazilian who’s been discussed at Man Utd in recent days is Ederson, the midfielder of Atalanta. Man Utd have discussed the player internally. He’s really appreciated. They believe it would be a fantastic signing – he can score goals, can provide assists, running everywhere on the pitch.

“Internally, they believe he’s the perfect player for Amorim. The style of football wanted by Amorim, what he did at Sporting, was with players similar to Ederson, running a lot, always with a big energy. Intensity is a crucial word for Amorim. So Ederson is seen as one of the perfect candidates, not the only one, but one of the perfect candidates for the midfield.”

It is noted that Ederson could cost as much as 50 million euros (£43m) this summer with the Red Devils having hurdles to overcome to secure his services.

“But Atalanta will not make it easy, and Man Utd know that,” Romano continued.

“Man Utd know that Atalanta, first of all, are not going to negotiate now, so it’s not going to be a similar case to Cunha. It’s not the deal for now. It’s something to see in the summer. There will be more clubs because Ederson is not only on Man Utd’s list.

“There are more clubs interested in the player, but the appreciation for Ederson is 100 per cent confirmed. When you see reports of €40m, €45m, €50m for Ederson – my understanding is that Atalanta want for sure more than €40m, €45m. With Atalanta, it’s really tough to negotiate.”

He added: “Then we have to see also about the Financial Fair Play because there is Cunha, there is the number nine – Man Utd want to sign a striker – they want to cover also more positions, so Man Utd will be quite busy this summer. It’s going to be important to understand who’s going to leave the club.

“Okay, there are players leaving on a free, [Christian] Eriksen and more, but there are also players who should leave to generate money, players like [Jadon] Sancho, [Marcus] Rashford, and others, and so that’s gonna be important to understand how much Man Utd can invest on a midfielder.”

Man Utd: Massive ‘price tag’ of failing to win Europa League revealed in ‘boom or bust’ worrying warning

A football finance expert has revealed the potential “price tag” of Manchester United failing to win the Europa League this season.

The Red Devils are experiencing a disastrous season as they have spent most of this campaign at the wrong end of the Premier League table.

INEOS’ decision to keep Erik ten Hag was proved a mistake and Ruben Amorim has struggled to implement his preferred 3-4-3 formation at Old Trafford.

Man Utd are at risk of finishing 17th in the Premier League this season, while they also failed in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

Their run in the Europa League has been a saving grace for Man Utd, who face Spanish outfit Athletic Bilbao in the semi-final stage of the competition. If they progress, the Red Devils will face Tottenham Hotspur or Bodo-Glimt in the final.

Should United win the Europa League, they would earn a spot in next season’s Champions League, but finance expert Rob Wilson has put a “price tag” on potentiall failure.

“You can put a price tag of £100m on Manchester United’s Europa League run,” Wilson said.

READ: Man Utd flop Hojlund, Havertz, Robertson: Top 10 Premier League players for the chop

“It’s quite similar to the playoff final and the 100m game. It is literally a boom or bust for them.

“If they win, they put themselves into the frame for that £100m on the line if they win the tournament.

“That £100m is made up of the fact that they would not be in Europe if they fail to win. So that’s no prize money because it’s the Champions League or nothing.”

Wilson also explained that the Red Devils would forfeit at least £60m in prize money if they miss out on Europe, while they face losing roughly £10m via matchday revenue.

👉 Amorim wants second Real Betis ‘sacrifice’ after Man Utd ‘propose swap deal’ for £25.5m Antony ‘discount’

He added: “So it’s at least £60m lost prize money, probably up to about 10m of lost matchday revenue because of the extra games they won’t therefore be playing.

“Then there are a number of clauses in the commercial deals and sponsorships that mean that some of those values reduce. So I think we comfortably get to £100m in value.”

Amorim has already commented on what he expects from Athletic Bilbao ahead of next Thursday’s first leg.

“I played against them in the pre-season with Sporting. So, I know a little bit,” Amorim said.

“Of course, it’s a different moment. We know that they are really technical. They have two wingers, really good.

“But we’ll have time to assess all the characteristics of the opponent. And we need to focus a lot on what we need to do until that game.”

City ready to outbid United to land Brazilian midfield jewel, blockbuster transfer battle on the cards – report

Ruben Amorim needs more quality in midfield moving forward as the current options at his disposal at Manchester United are simply not up to scratch.

Christian Eriksen’s time at the club is up with the Dane hardly managing to affect games like he used to, which is why the club have not offered him a contract extension.

Casemiro is enjoying a renaissance in form but INEOS are keen to get rid of his humongous wages. Someone like Kobbie Mainoo could also be moved on if he does not agree a new contract with the club.

As recently relayed by The Peoples Person, Atalanta’s Ederson has been identified as the perfect fit for what the head coach is trying to build.

Amorim wants Ederson

Champions League football is seen as a deal-breaker and this is where noisy neighbours Manchester City could hold the edge.

As per Tutto Atalanta, Pep Guardiola’s side are planning to submit their first offer for the Brazilian ace in the region of €50 million.

The Bergamo-based outfit will wait to see if other alternatives emerge in the race and if they are ready to offer more for the midfield dynamo.

But Ederson’s mind could be swayed by the possibility of moving to the Premier League to play for Guardiola and the Serie A side can ill afford to reject such a big offer.

“Pep Guardiola has no doubts: he wants Ederson. The Citizens’ sights are set on the Brazilian jewel of Atalanta, one of the best midfielders in the Italian championship.

City desperate to win the race

“To convince Atalanta to let their talent go, Manchester City would be ready to invest a considerable sum: 50 million euros. A proposal that, if officially confirmed, would represent a great temptation for the Nerazzurri club.

“Despite the English offer, Atalanta would prefer not to immediately let go of Ederson, a key player in Gian Piero Gasperini’s team. The Bergamo club is carefully evaluating the possible alternatives.

“But they are aware that it will be difficult to retain the Brazilian in the face of such an important offer and the prospect of competing at the highest international level, represented precisely by the Manchester club.”

United must act fast if they are to win the race. Without Champions League football, it will be difficult for INEOS to muster up the funds to beat City.

But victory in Bilbao could make the difference. Amorim and his team now have an added incentive to go all the way.
