Video: “Systems don’t win games”: Former PL manager explains how Amorim got the best out of his players vs Sunderland

Ruben Amorim was under extreme pressure heading into the Premier League game against Sunderland due to the team’s poor start under him.

Only two wins this season represented the club’s worst start in 33 years, and the media noise surrounding his potential sacking was doing little to alleviate the stress.

Most of the criticism stemmed from the fact that the ex-Sporting CP boss was utilising a flawed system which did not bring out the best from the players at his disposal.

But on Saturday, his team produced the goods thanks to Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko’s first-half strikes, while debutant Senne Lammens impressed in goal.

Ruben Amorim tactics worked

And former Tottenham Hotspur boss Tim Sherwood, who has been vocal when it comes to critiquing the United head coach, praised the way Amorim’s system worked against the Black Cats.

“I keep saying it, systems don’t win games. Players win games. We’ve talked a lot about the systems at Man Utd, but today Amorim is getting the best out of the individuals on the pitch.

“A very good performance” 👏

“It’s largely going direct to a centre forward who wants the ball, and getting players around him to help him,” he told Sky Sports.

He pointed out that the United head coach’s decision to play direct to Sesko worked a treat, with the Slovenian justifying INEOS’ decision to spend big on him in the summer.

Thanks to Sesko

United decided to play direct to the former RB Leipzig hitman with Lammens usually going long, with Sesko expertly flicking balls on, while also holding it up at times and linking up impressively with his teammates.

“Man United are playing direct to Sesko. I’ve never seen him have so many touches, which is pleasing to see. They’re not asking Lemmens to play out – he’s kicking it long – and it’s paying off.”

When you have a striker who is 6 feet 5 inches, it pays to use his strengths and United did just that on Saturday at Old Trafford.

That meant three successive home league wins and a first clean-sheet of the season. Not a bad way to head into the next game against fierce rivals Liverpool.

“If we just get a bit more…”: United hero in hard-fought WSL draw vs. Chelsea outlines key step to becoming unstoppable

Manchester United star Jess Park has revealed what her side must do to become an unstoppable force in the WSL, following their hard-fought 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Friday.

United hold Chelsea to a draw

Chelsea’s 100 per cent start to the Women’s Super League season came to an end on Friday night, as United salvaged a draw against them at the newly-named Progress With Unity Stadium in Leigh.

United made the brighter start of the two sides but it was Chelsea who struck first inside the opening 10 minutes, with Wieke Kaptein finishing off a clever backheel pass from Catarina Macario.

But the reigning champions’ advantage didn’t last too long, as Anna Sandberg restored parity in the 20th minute.

The defender fired a brilliant strike into the back of the net to register her first-ever goal for United.

Chelsea and United exchanged spells of dominance for the rest of the game, with both teams looking for a winning goal, but they eventually had to settle for a share of the spoils.

After the final whistle, Park, who was named Player of the Match, told club media that United need to be more clinical in front of goal to take their game to the next level.

Park’s post-match remarks

The summer signing said [as quoted by She Kicks], “We had really good moments in the game. Chances created, we need to stay a bit more clinical.”

“Alternatively, they had good chances, Maya [Le Tissier] with a super tackle at the end that kept us 1-1. You’ve got to take it, but we’d like to win them games.”

She continued, “It’s really starting to click now. You’ve seen how many chances we created: we can build from the back, we can build it longer, we’re a bit more creative in the style. The [dynamism] is hard for teams to cope with.”

“It’s coming together and I think if we just get a bit more clinical we’ll be right up there.”

On her time so far at United after joining the club from Manchester City, Park explained, “That’s what I wanted to do, come and play football and enjoy it and be creative and dynamic, linking with players. You can see it coming off now.”

“We’ve worked on it in training, we’ve worked on it together, and I think we’re getting the little details a lot more right now.”

United are back in action on Wednesday when they take on Norwegian outfit Vålerenga Fotball Damer in the Champions League.

3 final-third passes, 3 ball recoveries, 1 sumptuous finish: This United maestro suits Amorim’s system like a glove

Manchester United cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win over Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday. This was their third consecutive win at Old Trafford under Ruben Amorim this season.

Not only that, but the team kept their first clean sheet of the season, and the win comes at the right time for both the club and the head coach.

First-half goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko sealed the deal, while debutant Senne Lammens also impressed in goal.

The Portuguese tactician took the bold call of bringing back Mount into the starting XI while dropping Matheus Cunha to the bench.

Mount with the stunning impact

And the decision paid dividends within the opening 10 minutes as the ex-Chelsea ace scored with a scrumptious finish from Bryan Mbeumo’s cross.

It was a difficult ball to control inside the box, but he expertly evaded his marker, brought down the ball like a maestro before calmly slotting past the in-form Sunderland keeper.

Mason Mount’s game by numbers vs. Sunderland:

84% pass accuracy
37 total touches
4 touches in the box
4 defensive contributions
3 passes into the final third
3 ball recoveries
3 take-ons
1 chance created
1 shot
1 goal

One of his best showings to date. 👏 pic.twitter.com/Y7VjVe80aW

— Statman Dave (@StatmanDave) October 4, 2025

It was a finish of a man who knows exactly how to play in the head coach’s often-flawed system.

Having played in a similar style during his time at Stamford Bridge, the Englishman is qualified to start games and he proved it against the Black Cats.

Perfect fit under Amorim

He completed three final-third passes, while attempting three take-ons and created one chance. His most useful asset is his energy and drive without the ball.

In his 65 minutes, the England international completed three ball recoveries while making a total of four defensive contributions (all stats via Statman Dave).

His energy, and ability to play in multiple positions makes him the perfect weapon for Amorim and he suits the system like a glove.

Fans will love to always see Amorim’s strongest attack in action, but Mason Mount is making quite the case for his own inclusion.

Mount: We stepped up and showed character

Saturday 04 October 2025 18:52

Mason Mount felt the character shown by Manchester United was a key factor in helping the Reds to victory over Sunderland at Old Trafford.

Mount’s eighth-minute finish provided the perfect start for United, curling a low shot home in front of the Stretford End, after brilliantly bringing down Bryan Mbeumo’s right-wing cross.

Benjamin Sesko added a second on the half-hour mark and that gave the Reds enough of a platform to go on and seal all three points with a professional display.

Mount: Sharp start really helped us Video

INTERVIEW | Goalscorer Mason Mount reflects on an “all-round good day” for United going into the international break…

United’s No.7 acknowledged how the blistering start had helped the team to victory, when speaking with MUTV’s Liam Bradford after the game.

He said: “I know it had been difficult recently, but a really important win today, especially at home – I feel like we’ve been very solid.

“When we start sharply at home, there’s definitely a good chance that we can win the game. Getting that first goal and then getting another goal in the first half really helped us going forward.

“I think it’s so important to get the clean sheet as well, so all-round a good day today.

“There was a lot of pressure on today so for us to step up mentally, to really show character, was so important.

“We look forward now, we keep moving forward and stay together as a team.”

Mount’s beautiful finish to kickstart the Reds’ positive afternoon was his first for the club on home soil in the Premier League – and he wants to add plenty more to his name.

“It was a very good feeling getting on the scoresheet, first goal at home in the Premier League – it’s been a long time coming. Hopefully a few more to come now.

“Whenever I play, I want to get on the scoresheet, I want to help the lads around me and bring that energy on to the pitch.”

REACTION | Ben Thornley and Liam Bradford dissect an important victory for the Reds in M16…

Talking through the finish, he added: “It does feel a bit like slow motion. I think Bryan crossed it.

“As it’s coming across, the ball just looks like it’s in slow-motion, as you take the touch, all I remember is seeing the defender coming towards me and I just had to try and use him. Lucky enough, it went in. It was a really good feeling.”

Mount believes that the victory, going into the international break, will provide the team with an important boost – with Liverpool, at Anfield, next up in a fortnight’s time.

“It’s big for the morale, yeah, for sure,” he added. “We’re going to have a long break now into the next one so it’s about continuing improving in training.

“I know we have a few days off now but when we come back in to Carrington, we’ll be working hard to get ready for that next game. It’s so important, every game is so important, and we want to get as many three points as we can.”

Every word of Ruben’s post-Sunderland press conference

Skip to Main NavigationSkip to content

Saturday 04 October 2025 18:45

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim hailed a “comfortable” performance from debutant goalkeeper Senne Lammens in his side’s 2-0 win over Sunderland.

First-half goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko proved to be enough to seal all three points for the Reds, on a day that Lammens also secured a clean sheet in his first appearance.

Amorim met with journalists inside Old Trafford following the final whistle, where he discussed the new gloveman, what Sesko offers the team and how impressed he has been with Mount and Amad.

Keep scrolling to read everything he said in his post-match media briefing…

Hi Ruben. Must be nice to have a nice, straightforward win for once?
“Yeah, and a clean sheet is really important. We didn’t play well during all the game, but we had our moments. But if you look at the performance, it was a team. Focus, defending well, trying to kill the game in the second half. So, I’m pleased with that, and now it’s [time] to move forward to the next one.”

And the goalkeeper did very well today…
“Yeah, I think he looks confident in the first game, but [the] important thing is that the teammates help Senne to have a good game, because everyone was focused, not a lot of mistakes, against a team that was really comfortable playing football. So, we did well, [it] was a good day for us.”

A lot of people, with Senne, wondered why he’s not played before now, clearly fans have thought he should play. What kind of thought process do you go through to decide, he’s not playing, he’s not playing, and then he is playing?
“When Senne arrived here, first of all, Altay was playing, and then he arrives, and you can feel it, that he needs to adapt. New country, new training, the pressure that you guys put on the goalkeepers are massive. So, it was like a little preparation for the guy to be ready to start his first game. But now, it’s just one game, and he needs to work because he needs to be prepared that in our club, things are really hard. But he did well, and again, he was comfortable during the game and that is a very good sign.”

After a win like that, how frustrating is that you’ve got an international break now, because you ordinarily want to keep that momentum going?
“There is no momentum with our team, so with a break, without a break… we know what happened when we win one game. And then for me, the frustration is not to see the same team at home and away. And you saw today, we didn’t play well in the second half, but we were focused. We fight second balls. Ben [Sesko] was there to touch the ball all the time. So, these small things are going to help us to win games, and sometimes you have your moments. First half, we had a lot of moments, but then in the second half, if we cannot play well, they will not play well, and that is the way a big team play during the season. So, that is the big frustration.”

Can I just ask about Mason Mount? Obviously a different type of profile to Matheus Cunha playing in that role. What does he give to your team and the way you want to play?
“I think Mason Mount can give us… it’s more a midfielder than a winger or a striker. He can defend really well. He’s really smart. He can attack really well. Today, he had a number of minutes because we have to manage when a guy like Mason is returning from injury. He did really well. So, it’s the characteristics that we are going to change when we look to every opponent.”

Mason Mount was on the TV, he said the players are 100 per cent behind the gaffer. Is that what you’ve seen from your squad?
“I saw today, and I know that they want to do the best, and I know that they don’t want to change the coach all the time. But like I said during this week, to be with the manager is… I will kill myself to go in every transition. We need to show with actions. And sometimes when we look at our team, I know for sure that when we see the games in the end, they know that sometimes we can do better. So, I feel that during the week, but we need to show that on the pitch, not just at home, but also away.”

INTERVIEW | Goalscorer Mason Mount reflects on an “all-round good day” for United going into the international break…

I just wanted to ask about Benjamin. Two in two for him, two proper strikers’ goals, at close range as well. Is that what he was brought to the club for, to score those type of goals?
“To score the goals, to give us a different type of profile inside the box, to use more crosses because he’s going to improve the connection with his teammates. How many times [did] Senne kick the ball, [and] he was there to give the first touch? That is more important, especially in this league, that we are thinking, when there is a throw-in, we have an extra guy that is really big, especially at the first post. So, all the characteristics that Ben, not just the goals, but all the characteristics can help us to win games and we are happy with him. He puts a lot of pressure on himself, that is not a bad thing, but he has potential to do so much more.”

It’s been a tough week for Amad. How pleased are you with his performance today?
“Really pleased, really pleased. I think he defended really well. Attacking, we already know that he’s really good. Every time he has the ball one against one, he’s giving us a lot of chances to score. He can help Bryan to play more inside and worry more with the runs behind the defenders. We miss a lot Amad against Brentford, especially when we’re [in the] second half, 2-1, to have an extra guy like Amad, it’s massive. So, we are really pleased with him. He did a very good job.”

Sesko: There’s lots to come

Saturday 04 October 2025 18:01

Benjamin Sesko described scoring his first goal at Old Trafford as a ‘dream come true,’ but insists there is still plenty to come in his burgeoning Manchester United career.

Still less than two months into his time in M16, having signed from RB Leipzig in the summer, Sesko followed up his first goal for the club last weekend with his maiden Old Trafford strike against Sunderland on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds were 2-0 winners over the newly promoted outfit, with Mason Mount having opened the scoring before Sesko struck in instinctive fashion to double our advantage 15 minutes before the interval.

INTERVIEW | Benjamin Sesko says there’s more to come from him after scoring his first goal at Old Trafford…

Speaking to MUTV after the game, our no.30 said: “It feels amazing. It feels even better because I’ve helped the team to come to the end and to win the game.

“In the end, it’s important to win the game, trying to help the team as much as possible.

“The goal, the atmosphere afterwards was unbelievable. It’s something that I’ve been dreaming about, jumping high at the stadium like that, and yeah – [my] dreams came true.”

The Slovenia international is confident of continuing to provide the goods, assuring supporters that they are yet to see the best of him.

“In the end, this is my job; trying to score as many goals as possible, trying to win the games, trying to help the team in every single situation, and hopefully [there are] more moments like this [to come].”

“No, no yet,” he continued, when asked if we are starting to see the best of him. “There is loads [still] to come, definitely.

“I’m still getting used to it more and more, to read the players, to connect with them even more. I believe I can be even better and I will try to show it.”

In a similar vein, Sesko explained he is still getting accustomed to the different style of play in the Premier League compared to the Bundesliga.

“I think it’s way quicker, you have less time in general, I think this is one of the biggest changes I would say, and obviously also the physicality, everyone is really physical and athletic.

“I am getting used to it and I will come to the level of this soon.

“To play for a club like this or even train every single day, it’s an obvious pleasure. I’m looking forward to be back [after the international break].”

Official: United talent earns first senior international call-up even as his wait for a club debut continues

Manchester United talent Diego Leon has been called up to the Paraguay national team ahead of their upcoming friendlies.

Leon getting used to life at United

Leon officially joined United during the summer transfer window from Cerro Porteno.

He arrived at United having made 33 senior appearances for the Paraguayan club. The Red Devils forked out £3.3m to sign him, but the deal could rise to £7m with add-ons.

United and Cerro Porteno struck a deal in January but it was agreed that Leon would make the switch to Old Trafford in the summer.

Leon was part of United’s pre-season tour and, while he displayed glimpses of his talent, it was evident that he remains quite raw and still has plenty of work to do to polish his game.

He has yet to make his senior United debut, with his only appearance for United coming in Premier League 2.

Yet, even as he continues his development at United, Leon has already earned a maiden call-up to the Paraguay national team.

Leon called up by Paraguay

On Friday, Paraguay announced their squad ahead of their upcoming friendlies vs. Japan and South Korea.

Paraguay will face Japan on November 10 at the Panasonic Stadium Suita before taking on South Korea four days later in Seoul.

Gustavo Alfaro has called up Leon, who will be in contention to play in the two games.

Leon’s call-up comes a month after Paraguay booked their spot in the 2026 World Cup. If he performs well during the October international break, he could very well force himself into Alfaro’s thinking.

Leon will also be hoping that this latest step in his career acts as a springboard toward a bigger role and perhaps even a long-awaited debut for United.

100% aerial duels, 100% tackles, 3 clearances: Titanic United star delivers a commanding display in comfortable victory vs. Sunderland

Manchester United defender Leny Yoro impressed with a dominant performance as his side cruised to a 2-0 victory over Sunderland.

United beat Sunderland

United got back to winning ways as they comfortably eased past Sunderland at Old Trafford.

The game was a must-win for head coach Ruben Amorim, who has been under immense pressure amidst the club’s woeful start to the season.

United broke the deadlock after just eight minutes through Mason Mount. A well-timed partnership between Amad and Bryan Mbeumo set up a ball for Mount, who deftly controlled it and fired home.

It didn’t take long for United to double their advantage, this time as striker Benjamin Sesko produced the lightest of finishes inside a crowded box. The two first-half goals were all United needed to secure their second victory of the Premier League season.

The victory has propelled Amorim’s men to eighth place in the Premier League table.

Several United players were up for the occasion, including Yoro, who was restored to the starting XI after being dropped for the last two games.

Yoro stuns against Sunderland

During the time he was on the pitch before being taken off for Maguire late on, Yoro touched the ball 64 times in what was an all-action display.

Yoro won 100% of the ground duels he delved into and 100% of the tackles he put in. He completed 80% of his passes, four of which advanced into the attacking third.

The Frenchman made three clearances and two interceptions.

He did all of that without giving away a foul, highlighting the quality of his display. Yoro’s most memorable impact arguably came in the build-up to the second goal.

100% aerial duels won
100% tackles won

Amorim issues passionate “kill” plea to his players regarding his job, after win vs. Sunderland

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has called on his players to fight for everything and “kill” in transition to show their support for him.

United beat Sunderland

United got a much-needed win on Saturday as they beat Sunderland 2-0 at Old Trafford. Heading into the game, the pressure was on Amorim amidst the club’s woeful start to the campaign.

There was speculation over his job and suggestions that if United lost, the Portuguese coach could potentially be fired.

However, goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko in the first half sealed the win for United and may have given Amorim some breathing space.

United looked much improved against Sunderland compared to recent games, and in his post-match press conference, Amorim urged his players to prove their support for him through their performances rather than just words in the media.

Amorim’s post-match remarks

The United head coach remarked, “A clean sheet is really important. We didn’t play well the whole game but we had our moments. But if you look at the performance, it was a team. Focus, defending well, and trying to kill the game in the second half. I’m pleased with that that and now it’s to move forward to the next one.”

On Senne Lammens, Amorim said, “He looks confident in the first game. But the important thing is that the teammates helped Senne to have a good game, because everyone was focused. Not a lot of mistakes against a team that was really comfortable playing football. We did well and it was a good day for us.”

Asked why he delayed Lammens’ debut, Amorim explained, “When Senne arrived here, first of all, Altay [Bayindir] was playing and then he arrives, and you can feel that he needs time to adapt. New country, new training and the pressure that you guys put on the goalkeepers is massive. It was a little preparation for the guy to be ready to start this first game.”

“But now, it’s just one game and he needs to work because he needs to be prepared that in our club, things are really hard. He did well. He was very comfortable during the game and that is a very good sign.”

On whether the international break has come at a bad time for United, Amorim stressed that it doesn’t matter much for United, given their inability to show consistent form. He highlighted the contrast between the team’s impressive first half and the less convincing second half as an example of the team’s inconsistency, which he labelled a “big frustration.”

Asked about Mount, Amorim told reporters, “I think Mason Mount can give us…he’s more a midfielder than a winger or a striker. He can defend really well. He’s really smart. He can attack really well. Today he had a number of minutes because we have to manage when a guy like Mason is returning from injury.”

“He did really well. So it’s the characteristics that we are going to change when we look to every opponent.”

On the players being firmly behind him, Amorim said, “I know they want to do the best and they don’t want to change the coach all the time.”

“But like I said this week, to be with the manager, I will kill myself in every transition. We need to show with the actions and sometimes when we look at our team, I know for sure that when we see the games, in the end, they know that sometimes we can do better. I feel that during the week but we need to show that on the pitch. Not just at home but also away.”

Amorim praised Sesko’s “different profile,” highlighting the Slovenian’s aerial strength as well as his goalscoring ability.

The United head coach added that Sesko can become even better than he currently is.

Amorim also praised Amad, who returned to the team after missing last weekend’s meeting with Brentford due to a personal bereavement. He noted that Amad is “massive for the club.

United are back in action on October 19, after the international break, when they go away to Anfield to face Liverpool.

Amorim lathers fantastic United duo with praise after comfortable 2-0 win over Sunderland

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim highlighted two players for special praise after his side’s 2-0 victory against Sunderland.

United ease past Sunderland

United secured a much-needed victory against the Black Cats to ease pressure on Ruben Amorim, who now looks set to avoid the sack over the international break.

Heading into the game, the spotlight was on Amorim amidst United’s extremely poor start to the 2025/26 season.

Amorim was handed a fairytale start to the game as Mason Mount opened the scoring after just eight minutes. The midfield latched onto a ball from Bryan Mbeumo, expertly brought it under his spell before firing well past Robin Roefs.

Benjamin Sesko made it two for United, showing sharp awareness to slot the ball home from inside a packed penalty area.

The Red Devils had other chances to score but as it turned out, their two first-half goals were all they needed to secure the three points.

After the final whistle, Amorim spoke to BBC Sport and hailed his side’s mature performance. In particular, the Portuguese coach hailed Sesko and debutant Senne Lammens for their contributions.

Amorim singles out United duo

Amorim told BBC Sport, “That is the kind of game where when we’re not playing well we’re defending well.”

“We had our moments, we were focussed and competitive. Not the perfect performance. Senne [Lammens] did really well. We were a competitive and adult team today.”

“We need to win these games with a clean sheet. Good for us.”

He added, “We need to understand that we need everyone to be ready to play. It’s a long season, we have a lot of problems, anything can happen.”

“The important thing is that the teammates helped Lammens a lot to have a very good performance.”

Amorims said about Sesko, “He has time, he’s going to stay here for a lot of years. The media puts a lot of pressure on the goals for the striker but for me it’s the effort that is the most important thing.”

“Every time we kick the ball he’s fighting for it, that’s massive for us. To win the second ball and give us time to breathe. I’m really happy with that.”

“It’s frustrating to not have this kind of performance again. We need to do this kind of performance away as well – it’s our responsibility to play like this.”

United return to action after the international break on October 19, when they travel to Anfield to face bitter rivals Liverpool.
