Official: United talent earns first senior international call-up even as his wait for a club debut continues

Manchester United talent Diego Leon has been called up to the Paraguay national team ahead of their upcoming friendlies.

Leon getting used to life at United

Leon officially joined United during the summer transfer window from Cerro Porteno.

He arrived at United having made 33 senior appearances for the Paraguayan club. The Red Devils forked out £3.3m to sign him, but the deal could rise to £7m with add-ons.

United and Cerro Porteno struck a deal in January but it was agreed that Leon would make the switch to Old Trafford in the summer.

Leon was part of United’s pre-season tour and, while he displayed glimpses of his talent, it was evident that he remains quite raw and still has plenty of work to do to polish his game.

He has yet to make his senior United debut, with his only appearance for United coming in Premier League 2.

Yet, even as he continues his development at United, Leon has already earned a maiden call-up to the Paraguay national team.

Leon called up by Paraguay

On Friday, Paraguay announced their squad ahead of their upcoming friendlies vs. Japan and South Korea.

Paraguay will face Japan on November 10 at the Panasonic Stadium Suita before taking on South Korea four days later in Seoul.

Gustavo Alfaro has called up Leon, who will be in contention to play in the two games.

Leon’s call-up comes a month after Paraguay booked their spot in the 2026 World Cup. If he performs well during the October international break, he could very well force himself into Alfaro’s thinking.

Leon will also be hoping that this latest step in his career acts as a springboard toward a bigger role and perhaps even a long-awaited debut for United.
