Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes is showing no signs of slowing down, as he scoops up another prestigious award for his brilliant performances. Superb run Fernandes is enjoying a stellar season that currently has him on the verge of making Premier League history. He boasts an impressive eight goals and 19 assists. He is just two assists shy of breaking the Premier League record (20), which is currently held jointly by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry. Fernandes has spoken candidly about the feat, noting that it would be an incredible honour to be the undisputed Premier League assist king. The Portugal international was particularly effective in March as United faced Crystal Palace, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Bournemouth. He scored from the spot against both Crystal Palace and Bournemouth, while also delivering a sublime assist for Benjamin Sesko in the meeting with the former. The 31-year-old contributed two additional assists, both for Casemiro, against Newcastle and Aston Villa respectively. Both goals arrived from set-piece deliveries. He also created a brilliant goal for Cunha to sink Unai Emery’s men, United confirmed that Fernandes was nominated for the PFA Premier League Fans’ Player of the Month accolade for March. Other candidates who were vying for the award were James Garner (Everton), Danny Welbeck (Brighton & Hove Albion), David Raya (Arsenal), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle) and Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest). On Friday, it emerged that Fernandes had successfully seen off the competition to emerge as the outright winner. United star’s remarkable record under Carrick continues after victory vs. Brentford
Manchester United’s 2-1 victory over Brentford earlier this week extended a fine run for Diogo Dalot since Michael Carrick’s arrival. Carrick turnaround United have looked like a completely different outfit since Carrick was named Ruben Amorim’s temporary replacement at the start of the year. During Amorim’s tenure, United endured significant inconsistency, accompanied by controversies on and off the field. Since Carrick’s arrival, performances have improved markedly, and the club now stands on the cusp of Champions League qualification. Carrick has managed 13 games. He has registered nine victories, two draws and two losses. At present, the Red Devils sit in third place in the Premier League table, three points above bitter rivals Liverpool. United need just two points from their remaining four games to mathematically book their slot in next season’s Champions League. The transformation Carrick has overseen has made him the frontrunner to secure the Old Trafford hot seat on a permanent basis. While other managers like Andoni Iraola, Julian Nagelsmann, Oliver Glasner and Gareth Southgate have also been mentioned to be in the running, Carrick enjoys significant support both internally and outside the club. Dalot has become a key player for Carrick. The victory over Brentford means the full-back has still not experienced defeat in any match he has started under the legendary midfielder. Brilliant run As United highlight, the team has not lost a game when Dalot has been named in the starting XI by Carrick. The Portugal international only came on as a substitute during the 2-1 loss to Newcastle in March. He was also on the bench when United suffered a shock defeat at the hands of historic rivals Leeds United. Dalot is unbeaten across his last 14 starts for the club, dating as far back as the 2-1 loss vs. Aston Villa. Amorim was still the head coach at the time. Only Luke Shaw (34) has made more Premier League appearances than Dalot in the United squad this season. Dalot stands level with Casemiro (32). United will be praying Dalot’s remarkable streak stays intact when Liverpool visit on Sunday. 11 goals in 14 games: Ineos eyeing red-hot Dutch attacker tearing up Serie A – report
Despite having one of the fiercest attacks in England, with only Arsenal and Manchester City having scored more goals, Manchester United still have an appetite to strengthen their forward line further. The Red Devils appear determined to build the best attack in both England and Europe, and to achieve that, they are targeting two signings this summer. INEOS are expected to pursue a left winger and a backup striker, with the latter contingent on Joshua Zirkzee’s departure. Donyell Malen interests Manchester United While the identity of their preferred winger remains a mystery, Corriere dello Sport have dropped a massive hint regarding the striker that United could pursue. As per the Italian outlet via Sport Witness: “The big clubs are watching the Aston Villa loanee (Donyel Malen) while he shines in the Italian capital.” The report goes on to identify exactly which clubs have been keeping tabs on the Dutch attacker, who has notched 11 goals in 14 games: “Chelsea, Manchester United, and Newcastle United all have their eye on Donyell Malen.” Roma tempted to sell him at a profit According to the report, Roma, who brought Donyell Malen in on loan in January, will look to make his move permanent. The Giallorossi hold a €25 million (£21.5m) option to do so, and once he becomes their player outright, they could be tempted to cash in, but only if a €50 million (£43m) offer arrives. Price a put-off While the links to Malen are understandable, splashing that kind of money on the 27-year-old is hard to justify. He failed to make a significant impact at Villa Park, and bringing him back to the Premier League carries some risk. Had he been available at a price closer to Roma’s purchase price, the calculus would look very different. At that figure, he could yet have proven the Benjamin Sesko deputy many had hoped Zirkzee would become. “Probably shouldn’t have…”: Harry Maguire explains how he lost United captaincy under Erik ten Hag
Harry Maguire signed a contract extension with Manchester United last month, adding further intrigue to his already topsy-turvy spell at Old Trafford. Stripped of the captaincy in the summer of 2023 and pushed to the brink of an exit, it is a testament to the player’s resilience that he fought back to become a key figure in the squad in recent seasons. Maguire arrived at the Theatre of Dreams in the summer of 2019 from Leicester City as the most expensive defender in the world, a record that stands to this day. The weight of expectations generated by that label bore heavily on his shoulders at times. While the Englishman divided opinion among fans, he was an indispensable member of the starting XI during former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign. Getting the armband under Solskjaer It was the Norwegian who handed Maguire the armband in January 2020, following Ashley Young’s departure. The Englishman retained the position under Solskjaer’s temporary replacement, Ralf Rangnick, and also briefly under his successor, Erik ten Hag. Maguire even won the EFL Cup during the Dutch manager’s first season at the Theatre of Dreams, where the Red Devils finished third in the league table. By then, though, he had fallen behind Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane in the pecking order at Old Trafford. Ten Hag opted for a change in captaincy before the beginning of the 2023/24 campaign, handing Bruno Fernandes the armband. The Englishman has now shed light on how the circumstances unfolded and his reaction to the decision. Maguire loved being captain Speaking to Arsenal legend Ian Wright on My Best Coach podcast, Maguire acknowledged that he was initially naïve to the external pressure at United. He said: “I really don’t worry about anything. I’m not fazed by anything. I was a little bit naive. I think that it helped me that I was so naive because I was the captain of Manchester United, we were having a real bad season, and I just thought it was normal.” “I was naive to that, you’re the captain it’s going to come down on you, and this is the reason they’re doing it. It was only when I looked back a couple of years later or a year later when I thought it was a bit over the top. It just got to a point where it was all for clicks. It was harder for my family.” The English defender went on to reveal that his relationship with Ten Hag was affected by his reduced minutes on the pitch, adding: “I loved being the captain. I can’t remember the league position we finished when I was captain, but it was progressing.” “To be honest, it was Erik’s decision and the season before we finished third, won the cup and I was captain. I didn’t feel like his captain. I probably shouldn’t have allowed our relationship to drift apart a little bit, but I just didn’t feel important to him. For Erik it was the right decision because I wasn’t his captain.” Final Thoughts Maguire was outstanding under former head coach Ruben Amorim and remains as crucial as ever under caretaker manager Michael Carrick. With young defenders like Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven in the squad, United’s decision to extend his stay until at least the end of next season looks like a wise one. “Huge for me”: Mainoo names the two United role models who left him in awe early on
Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has named which two of his teammates he looks up to the most, as he also highlighted the importance of the academy to the club. Set to stay On Thursday, United confirmed that Mainoo had put pen to paper on a new contract that will extend his stay at the club until 2031. There had been speculation over Mainoo’s future, especially while Ruben Amorim was in charge of the team. For reasons best known to himself, Amorim constantly overlooked Mainoo in favour of other options, including the uninspiring Manuel Ugarte. Toward the end of his spell at Old Trafford, Amorim displayed visible irritation when pressed on where Mainoo fit into his future plans. Michael Carrick’s appointment, however, has given the England international a fresh start. Since Carrick took charge, Mainoo has featured in the starting XI for every match he has been fit and available. His performances have been nothing short of outstanding, prompting United to accelerate new contract talks. Reacting to the development, Mainoo labelled United his home, insisting that it means everything both to him and his family. In a separate interview with the Inside Carrington podcast, Mainoo noted that Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes are the two players he has learned the most from. Mainoo’s revelation The 21-year-old said, “Before every game, when we go around and shake everyone’s hand while we’re on the pitch, Casemiro will say, ‘let’s have fun. Let’s enjoy football.’ You know, that’s what it is, isn’t it?” “You have fun and you love to win, but ultimately, I’d be playing the game for free, I’d be playing in the back garden, if I wasn’t playing it here.” He added, “It’s been huge for me because I’ve learned so much off [Casemiro]. Him and Bruno, to be fair. Mostly in training, like when I was 16 or 17, I’d come up to train, and I was only training with the first team at that time, I wasn’t playing games – like training was my games.” “I’d watch them and the pace of training was so high, and I’d just think, how are they so calm in that? And like what are they doing? I’d go home and I’d think about it a lot, and I’d try and implement things. But I’m still learning now, to this day.” On the youth system at United, Mainoo remarked, “Yeah, definitely [feel a responsibility for new players coming into the team] a little bit. Especially with the young players who come up to the first team, like Under-18s and stuff, because I know what it was like when I first came up and people who helped me, so I try and be that same thing for them.” “It’s definitely important. I mean, for me, it was important. It’s a big thing that United’s built on, players coming through the Academy.” Mainoo and United are next in action on Sunday when they welcome Liverpool to Old Trafford. United handed clear run at £69m passmaster as fierce rivals suddenly ditch transfer plans – report
Manchester United’s desire to bring Morten Hjulmand to Old Trafford has received a major boost, according to a Portuguese report. With the summer transfer window fast approaching, all eyes are on how INEOS will revamp this Manchester United midfield. Casemiro is leaving, and Manuel Ugarte is also widely expected to depart, giving the Red Devils a big reason to rebuild their engine room. United have therefore been linked with several fantastic central midfielders. One of these is Sporting CP’s pass master Hjulmand. Morten Hjulmand a top target Hjulmand is a player the Red Devils have long admired. And it’s easy to understand why: a complete, tactically disciplined deep-lying midfielder who dictates the tempo with smart passing and anchors the team by breaking up play, the Danish international is one of the finest defensive midfielders around. Manchester City transfer battle Reports have suggested that the Red Devils face a tough battle for his services with their noisy neighbours, Manchester City, also keen. It was suggested that City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, who played a key role in Sporting signing Hjulmand from Lecce, would look to use his connections at the Portuguese club to win the race for the midfielder. That was obviously going to make things difficult for United. However, as INEOS were also drawing up a plan to trounce their City rivals, they have now been handed a key reason why they may not need to. City’s position in this transfer As per A Bola, City are now set to be the least of United’s worries in their pursuit of Hjulmand. The Portuguese outlet reports: “Hjulmand’s future seems to be moving further away from Alvalade and closer to the Theatre of Dreams… “United has jumped into pole position.” The report goes on to explain why: “City were once considered strong suitors, but the situation has radically changed in recent days. “The Citizens have reportedly shifted their focus to Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest, leaving the path clearer for the Red Devils.” On the figure INEOS may need to part with, the report reveals an agreement between Hjulmand and Sporting, the Portuguese champions, “for Sporting to agree to sit at the negotiating table for sums between €40 and €50 million.” INEOS must act At around £43 million, Hjulmand represents a deal too good to ignore, and with their biggest transfer rival now out of the picture, it would be surprising if INEOS let this opportunity pass. They simply should not. With Hjulmand, the Red Devils can still land that marquee midfield signing, one that, alongside further additions, lays the foundation for a dominant new era at Old Trafford. 4-2-3-1: This red-hot United XI will trounce sorry Slot’s Liverpool as Carrick’s rock-n-roll revival continues

Michael Carrick could be in the unusual position of having every member of his Manchester United squad available except two for Sunday’s home Premier League game against Liverpool. The interim manager said at the pre-match press conference that Matheus Cunha is back in training after missing the Brentford game and that he is “hopeful” he will play. Meanwhile, it appears that Luke Shaw has recovered from a knock sustained against the Bees and is still on track to start every match of the season for the first time in his career. The only absentees are likely to be Matthijs de Ligt, whose back injury still has not fully resolved, and Lisandro Martinez, who serves the third and final match of his suspension for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s ponytail in the match against Everton. Defence The defence could be unchanged, with Diogo Dalot at right-back, Harry Maguire and Ayden Heaven as the centre-backs, and Shaw at left-back. However, Noussair Mazraoui’s excellent form may be too difficult for Carrick to ignore. As he is arguably better defensively than Dalot, we are tipping him to get the nod at right-back. Leny Yoro and Patrick Dorgu are also options, but we expect them to start on the bench. Midfield and Attack Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo have been superb in central midfield of late and will undoubtedly start, especially as the only other viable option is Manu Ugarte, whose own form has been poor. Bruno Fernandes will play in the number 10 position. If Cunha is deemed fit to start, he will surely come straight back into the line-up. Bryan Mbeumo and Amad are also both struggling to make their presence felt at the moment. Whilst Carrick insisted Amad’s half-time substitution against Keith Andrews’ men was tactical, the Ivorian really had been poor in the first 45 minutes. Mbeumo will therefore probably start on the right wing, with Ben Sesko up top. Mason Mount looked lively in his cameo on Monday and has an outside chance, as does Josh Zirkzee, but these are long shots for a starting berth. Final thoughts Mazraoui in for Dalot Heaven to keep his place alongside Maguire Cunha to return with Amad making way. United will hit Liverpool where they are weakest with this clever tactical plan to destroy old rivals

Manchester United welcome old rivals Liverpool to Old Trafford this weekend for a fixture that could officially seal their return to the Champions League for next season. A win against the Merseyside club will mean Michael Carrick has guided his team into the top five of the Premier League with three games to spare and leave them favourites for an impressive third-place finish. Despite neither club fighting for the title this year, the grand old fixture remains arguably the biggest in the English top flight, with the two sides sharing a whopping 40 league crowns between them. Additionally, the game takes on huge significance for both managers, who are fighting to hang on to their respective positions for next season. Arne Slot has endured a tough campaign after an eye-watering spend last summer, with Carrick’s proposed interim spell at Old Trafford looking too good to ignore and likely to turn permanent. Therefore, winning the tactical battle will be of huge importance to both men in the dugout, and here are a few things that could tip the odds in United’s favour. Counter Attack United have been blistering on the counter-attack since Carrick’s arrival. His three huge victories against Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea have been conjured from playing on the break, and this will be the plan once more. His favoured 4-3-2-1 formation will be at play, which allows the front men to sit on the shoulder of the Liverpool defence, ready to pounce on transitions. Arne Slot does like his side to play with the ball, but they have lacked that cutting edge throughout the campaign, which could play perfectly into United’s hands on Sunday. United’s ability to spring out quickly with the pace of Mbeumo and Sesko being fed from the outstanding Bruno Fernandes and clever Matheus Cunha should lead to Carrick’s men creating chances aplenty on the day. Slot’s team do have obvious threats, but the intensity just hasn’t been there this year, and United will look to take advantage of that with a fast start and constant pressure throughout the 90 minutes. Midfield Battle It’s been a long time since United went into this game in better fettle than their old rivals, but given the form of Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo, the home side will really fancy their chance of winning the battle in the middle of the park. Mainoo is the calm to Casemiro’s storm, and the pair have forged a fine relationship in recent weeks to protect the back line and start attacking plays. It’s the Brazilian’s penultimate game at Old Trafford, and his infectious energy and desire that has spread through the side since the turn of the calendar year will be the catalyst to overpowering Dominik Szoboszlai and Florian Wirtz in dangerous areas. Using the ball well in central areas will be key, and United will have no shame in moving the ball quickly through the lines to their attacking stars rather than the death by a thousand passes that Slot’s team will favour. Hit them where they are weak When United win the ball back in and around their own box, the quality and experience of the players in the midfield areas will serve the electric front line and hit Liverpool where they are weakest – at full-back. The visitors do have injuries to some key attacking players, so Jeremie Frimpong is likely to start in a front three that will leave Curtis Jones filling in at right-back, with the outgoing Andy Robertson on the other side. United must take advantage of this and feed the wide players as quickly as possible. Mbeumo will run all day, and despite his goals drying up in recent weeks, he will allow for first-time passes in behind the Liverpool back line that lacks pace. Sesko will do likewise, and with the dangerous support acts of Fernandes and Cunha, will give United fluidity and options when bearing down on goal. Carrick will also have options off the bench, whether it’s Cunha or Amad that starts the game, the other will be ready and waiting on the sidelines. Both have the ability to affect games in a split second and will be desperate to leave their mark on the historic fixture. Set Pieces It’s become impossible to discuss United’s best route to goal without mentioning set pieces. Bruno Fernandes is on his way to beating the all-time Premier League assist record, and this has been in no small part due to the influence of dead ball situations. Harry Maguire and Casemiro linked beautifully for the opener against Brentford and are a constant menace from any dead ball sent into the opposition box. United’s win at Anfield – that has set them up for their first league double in over a decade – came from the head of Maguire, and it would not be a surprise to see another set piece masterclass at the Theatre of Dreams on Sunday. Carrick’s crowning glory The blueprint was set in the magnificent win against City in January, where Carrick’s men looked threatening, comfortable, and every inch the side deserving of a top three finish. Should United produce the same performance against the biggest rival of all this weekend, they will surely end the season in third place, which looked a million miles away when he took the job in January. Against Liverpool, it’s always more than just three points, but Sunday represents a wonderful chance for Carrick to end his audition in style and leave INEOS with little choice but to hand him the reins on a permanent basis with a ticket back to Europe’s top table secured. United youngster set to join Spanish club, teammates have already bid farewell – report
Manchester United have regularly raided Spanish clubs to strengthen their academy. In recent times, the Red Devils convinced Alejandro Garnacho and Álvaro Carreras to leave Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid respectively for Carrington. Both failed to remain in Manchester for long but helped United secure more than £50 million in transfer fees. The tables appear to have turned, with Spanish clubs now targeting United academy stars. Darlington Osuchukwu set for a move to Spain According to journalist Paddy Keogh, highly-rated goalkeeper Darlington Osuchukwu is set to leave Manchester United, with the youngster expected to return to Spain this summer. Born in Murcia, Osuchukwu, who is a giant for his age, is regarded as one of the most promising prospects within the academy ranks. He has made steady progress through the setup since joining United from Spanish side Gazte Berriak at the age of 13. The 16-year-old has committed to representing Spain’s under-17 side despite some involvement with England youth squads. At United, he features prominently for the under-16s and has also been named on the bench for the under-18s. Last year, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Real Madrid are interested in Osuchukwu. However, for now, the name of his next Spanish destination remains unknown. Teammates Jaume Camacho and Josep Camacho have already shared farewell messages for Osuchukwu. On Instagram, Camacho posted a picture of the pair with a message: “End of an era bro, hasta pronto”. La Liga powerhouses chasing JJ Gabriel United also face a battle to keep hold of JJ Gabriel, who is by far the club’s finest academy jewel at present. The electric winger turns 16 in October and holds an Irish passport thanks to his father, former Ireland international Joe O’Cearuill. This makes him a potential “flight risk” for United because he is allowed to play in the European Union from the age of 16. Recently, The Peoples Person covered a report suggesting Barcelona and Real Madrid are “closely tracking” the situation in hopes of luring Gabriel to Spain.
