Man Utd are expected to seal a €60m (£50m) move for Sporting Lisbon winger Geovany Quenda in the summer, according to reports.

The Red Devils made five signings in the summer transfer window as they looked to give Erik ten Hag their full support after deciding to keep him on over the summer.

Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro and Noussair Mazraoui all joined before the end of the summer market but they have yet to have the impact the Man Utd hierarchy and fans were hoping.

Ten Hag was sacked after winning just three of the Red Devils’ opening nine Premier League matches with Amorim replacing him at the beginning of November.

Man Utd interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy added another four points to their Premier League total before leaving the club last week.

And Amorim grabbed his first point in his first match in a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town on Sunday with an Omari Hutchinson strike cancelling out a second-minute opener from Marcus Rashford.

There has already been plenty of speculation over potential new signings at Old Trafford now Amorim has taken over with worries about how the Man Utd players will fit into his 3-4-3 formation.

Predictably, a number of his former Sporting Lisbon stars have been linked with a move to Man Utd ahead of the January transfer window.

There is unlikely to be a lot of money available for the Red Devils to bring in players mid-season but they have more chance of spending big in the summer.

And reports in Spain, referring to Quenda as the ‘new Lamine Yamal’, claim that Man Utd ‘signs him’ for €60m as the Red Devils look to ‘strengthen its squad’.

The report adds that Man Utd ‘appear to have found their next big thing’ and if a deal happens in January then Quenda ‘would finish the season in Portugal before moving to Old Trafford’.

New Red Devils boss Amorim ‘would be delighted to have one of his favourite pupils back’ after the 17-year-old became ‘a key player in his 3-4-3 formation’.

Man Utd are hoping that ‘the connection with Amorim could tip the balance’ in their favour ‘while the transfer is not expected to be finalised until the summer’.

The signing of Quenda would reaffirm the Red Devils’ ‘commitment to rejuvenating their squad and building a competitive team for the long term.’.

Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim has made finding a new striker a “priority” and the issue “will be addressed in January”, according to a club insider.

The Red Devils have had a terrible start to the new Premier League campaign with Man Utd sat 12th in the table after Amorim’s first match in charge against Ipswich on Sunday.

Amorim’s side could only muster a 1-1 draw at Portman Road as they tried out a new 3-4-3 formation under their new head coach.

There are worries that Man Utd do not have the players required to play Amorim’s style of play and tactics with the new Red Devils boss even commenting that Marcus Rashford is perhaps better used out wide than through the middle, where he started the academy graduate on Sunday.

Only Everton, Crystal Palace and Southampton have scored fewer goals in the Premier League than Man Utd this season with Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee scoring four times between them.

And now former Man Utd chief scout Mick Brown has revealed that the Red Devils’ lack of goals “will be addressed in January”.

Brown told Football Insider: “It’s very much considered a weakness in the team. I know there have been questions about whether the strikers, Hojlund or Zirkzee, are up to it.

“Every time they come on, they look like a couple of trialists, not starting strikers for Man United.

“Marcus Rashford, you never know what you’re getting with him. There’s no doubt he’s got the ability to lead the line, but whether he’s got the enthusiasm for it, I don’t know.

“But that’s a part of the team that needs remedying and it’s an area they want to recruit in.

“Everything you do revolves around your front man, so that is going to be their priority.

“Amorim has already identified that as one of the weaknesses in this United team and that became clear in the game against Ipswich and will be addressed in January.”

And Sky Germany have claimed that there are four strikers ‘currently being discussed in Manchester as possible reinforcements in attack’ in the form of Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush, Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Paris Saint-Germain’s Randal Kolo Muani.

Kolo Muani is ‘set to leave’ PSG as he continues to be used sparingly with a ‘loan in the winter or even a sale for a top offer are desired’, while Liverpool target Marmoush at Frankfurt is also ‘in United’s sights’ but would cost between €50m and €60m.

Man Utd ‘would have to spend a lot of money’ to convince Leverkusen to sell Boniface in January, while Osimhen – who is currently on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli – ‘would probably be the most prominent striker solution for United’ as the Italians are open to offers.

Man Utd are ready to replace summer signing Joshua Zirkzee after just a few months at Old Trafford, according to reports.

The report claims: ‘Senior figures at United privately feel Zirkzee is a lost cause. United will need a proven goalscorer next year and someone has to make way.’

Former Man Utd striker Dwight Yorke has been outspoken about the Red Devils frontline and reckons the Premier League club have been “bringing in kids to do a man’s job”.

Yorke said last month: “We’ve asked these young boys to come in and do a man’s job at United. The expectation is really high. Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee, these guys are unknown. At United you always had someone you could learn from.

“When I came in, Teddy and Cole, they’d already set the standards. There’s nobody with those standards at United right now. These players are coming in with nobody around them to learn from.

“Unless you bring in an established player, you’re bringing in kids to do a man’s job. They’re still in that learning process until you get to 25 or 26. Then you’ve done your apprenticeship.”

Yorke added: “Of course, there are exceptions like [Erling] Haaland, but we’ve got guys still trying to find their feet at the club, let alone the Premier League. We don’t have that kind of presence up top, to threaten defenders.

“When we used to play, there was always a name like Van Nistelrooy, me, and Wayne Rooney. Defenders don’t look forward to that. Now we’ve got Hojlund and Zirkzee, not household names to give you sleepless nights.

“That’s why United are easy to play against, they don’t pose a threat like they used to. Yes, they’ve got good players. Rashford on his day is as good as anyone else. Amad, who’s a young kid coming in, has looked promising when he’s played.

“Antony is not producing. We’ve got a mixture of everything. We’re all hoping that these guys are going to come to the forefront, but they’re young boys, still learning.”

Real Madrid are reportedly interested in signing Man Utd and Arsenal target Viktor Gyokeres and could tempt Sporting into a swap deal including Endrick.

Gyokeres has scored an extraordinary 49 goals for Sporting in 2024, which is not going unnoticed around Europe.

Ruben Amorim’s move from Sporting to Man Utd, coupled with Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund’s struggles, saw links to the Swedish striker accelerate, though it remains to be seen if the Red Devils have the available funds to sign him in January.

Arsenal have also been strongly linked over the last 12 months but Real Madrid have now joined the race.

Real Madrid join Man Utd, Arsenal in Gyokeres transfer hunt

According to reports in Spain, Gyokeres is on Madrid’s ‘radar’ and the La Liga giants are now ‘beginning to study a strategy to get his services’.

Despite the summer signing of Kylian Mbappe, it is claimed that the European champions ‘are looking to rejuvenate and strengthen their attack, especially with players who combine physicality, technique and goalscoring efficiency’, which makes Gyokeres the ‘perfect’ addition.

Sporting will not let their star man go without a fight and will likely tell interested clubs to trigger his 100 million euro (£83.5m) release clause.

Interestingly, it is claimed that Los Blancos ‘could use Endrick’ to tempt Sporting into the sale of Gyokeres.

They will only offer the Brazilian teenager on a loan basis but his arrival could be ‘an attractive formula to convince’ the Portuguese champions.

While landing Gyokeres in January will be tricky, it is claimed that he is ‘desired’ ahead of the winter transfer window and that Sporting are uncertain how long they can keep a player ‘destined for the big European nights’.

Former Man Utd defender Paul Parker thinks the addition of Gyokeres would be “perfect” following Amorim’s arrival as head coach.

“I think it would be amazing if Man United can sign Gyokeres. In my opinion, it would be one of the best possible signings and maybe one of the best signings in recent times in the Premier League.”

“He knows how Amorim wants to play and vice versa. He would be the perfect addition, and also add some competition to Højlund who really needs it, because he hasn’t shown enough yet.”

“Gyokeres would be a top striker in the Premier League.”

Parker added: “I saw a lot of him when he was at Coventry. He was so good, but he has just improved even more since at Sporting.”

“He is a goal scoring machine, and he is arguably one of the best strikers in the world.”

“A lot of us were surprised that Sporting managed to sign him, because other clubs here in England should have been interested, but in the end he joined Sporting, which has been a very good decision.”

Gyokeres could end up at Arsenal, who might finally decide to spend big on a new striker.

Former Gunners defeander Bacary Sagna has boldly told Mikel Arteta to sign the Swede and free agent Paul Pogba.

“I’ve always said that Paul Pogba would be a good addition for Arsenal. I believe he could be an asset to the club.

“With his creativity, having him on a short-term contract would benefit everyone. It would help Paul get back into football and get him back to full fitness and quality.

“I would love Arsenal to sign Viktor Gyökeres, the Swedish striker who plays for Sporting Lisbon. He’s amazing, honestly.

(Though we would like to pause for a moment and appreciate a United ‘source’ who does not know how to spell Fernandes (Fernandez) or Ten Hag (Ten Haag)).

(Oh and pause to appreciate an opening line that hails ‘celebrity guests including superstars Rita Ora and Lady Gaga’, which might be the most flattering sentence ever written about one of those women).

The ‘United source’ who has spoken to the MailOnline and is absolutely definitely not made up, is quoted as saying: “The Hale and Bowdon area has been mentioned where his captain Fernandez lives and many of the players. It is just a short drive to the training ground.

“He could move into Ten Haag’s old place or even Paul Pogba’s place. But he is in the Lowry for the moment. He has walked round the city a bit and had a coffee in a few of the cafes.”

He ‘could’ move into those two specific houses but he also ‘could’ move into any other vacant property in those areas, or any other area. It’s almost like this particular ‘source’ has no specific information about Amorim’s house-hunting plans.

But obviously…

The Sun‘s North West District Editor Richard Moriarty has long had a source inside Manchester United’s dressing-room feeding him exclusives; in the last week alone he’s brought the news that Marcus Rashford has taken up boxing, Ruben Amorim name-checked Fergie while rallying his Manchester United troops and Ruud van Nistelrooy ‘urged Manchester United’s players to get behind new manager Ruben Amorim’.

None of it ground-breaking, none of it explosive, none of it particularly interesting, if we’re honest. And that also applies to his latest exclusive:

RUBEN AMORIM gave Manchester United five out of ten for Sunday’s performance at Ipswich.

Seems fair. Seems reasonable. Amorim has been pretty honest about his team’s failures at Ipswich. And a 1-1 draw against a team battling relegation is a 5/10 kind of result from a 5/10 performance.

Mediawatch has no beef with the story; it feels broadly accurate and it’s pretty harmless. It’s highly unlikely that Amorim would give a flying f*** about anybody knowing about his 5/10 rating. What amuses us is how it is reported elsewhere.

It’s the sh***est ‘leak’ ever. Football manager thinks below-average performance was below-average shock!

And they have got very carried away: ‘Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is already ripping up the playbook at Old Trafford after a reported dressing room leak revealed he gave out player ratings following their 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town.’

Nope. No he didn’t. And you sodding know he didn’t. But there’s that ‘curiosity gap’ and there will be many football fans falling down that gaping hole. See you down there…

Ruben Amorim might want to re-think that Manchester United rating when he realises that Danny Murphy was not impressed.

According to the Mirror: ‘Ruben Amorim brutally told that ambitious Manchester United plan ‘won’t work”

First, Murphy never said it ‘won’t work’, but quote marks have long since ceased to mean anything at all. What he did say was this – “I’d be amazed if they were still playing a 3-4-3 in a year’s time” – because he is a keen proponent of the Our League approach to punditry.
