United leading race to sign “fantastic” winger, talks held over club-record deal for a teenager – report

Manchester United played out a goalless draw with Sunderland in what was a forgettable encounter at the Stadium of Light. The Red Devils lacked a cutting edge away from home, managing just two shots on target. Fortunately for Michael Carrick, the stalemate is unlikely to have any bearing on where United finish. However, ahead of next season, United are actively looking to strengthen their attacking options by bringing in proven stars as well as promising young talent for the future. Manchester United in talks to secure £6m signing On Friday, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Manchester United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, recently met with club officials from Leicester City. It is believed United hold a firm interest in Leicester’s record-breaking winger Jeremy Monga, who made history as his club’s youngest Premier League player at 15 years and 271 days old last year. Interestingly, it was United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy who gave Monga his first taste of senior football. Last year, the former Leicester boss hailed Monga, stating: “He’s a great winger and has speed. He’s a fantastic talent, a great boy. He deserved these minutes and hopefully, more to come.” According to the Daily Mirror (via Leicester Mercury), United are currently leading the race to sign the 16-year-old electric winger, having opened talks with Leicester over a summer move. Monga, who has impressed with his astute decision-making and sharp movement in the final third, made 30 appearances across all competitions last term. Monga agreed a new deal at the King Power Stadium last summer that will turn into a professional contract when he turns 17 in July. However, with the Foxes heading to League One, the England U19 international is unlikely to favour continuing at the club. The report claims that Leicester could be in line to receive close to £6 million for Monga. That fee would be the highest the club has received for a teenager. Manchester United want Morgan Rogers Manchester United remain keen on signing a first-team ready winger as well, having set their sights on Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers. It is understood Villa are open to parting ways with Rogers, who is valued at around £80m. The 23-year-old dribbling wizard, who played under Michael Carrick at Middlesbrough, has been directly involved in 14 Premier League goals this term. “Honestly, I almost got offended”: Carrick bristles after reporter’s accusation towards United players in Sunderland draw

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick spoke to the press after his side’s fortuitous 0-0 draw with Sunderland. Tough place The Black Cats were the better team throughout, but Matheus Cunha could have won the match late on with a golden opportunity; however, he was denied by Robin Roefs. Carrick, speaking at his post-match press conference, focused on the positives of a difficult afternoon. He explained, “it was a tough game, no doubt about that. Credit to Sunderland — we knew coming here would be challenging. At times we had to dig really deep. It certainly wasn’t our best performance, but being able to take something from the game when you’re not at your best is an important trait we’re trying to build.” Carrick did admit the changes to the line-up had an impact, but claimed a clean sheet and an away draw was “an acceptable” outcome. Joshua Zirkzee The Dutchman has found it hard to earn minutes this season, but got a rare chance to start yesterday. It is fair to say he hardly seized his opportunity, but Carrick was more measured in his evaluation of his performance. He claimed, “to be honest, I thought it was just a difficult game for everyone. Away games like this are always demanding. There were moments when Josh linked play really well, and other times when we probably left him a bit isolated. That can happen in football.” Carrick also said he played an “important role” in the team and that Zirkzee would not be judged in the context of one match. Squad depth It is common knowledge that United need squad depth for next season, when they will have to balance Champions League football with the Premier League. Commenting on the issue, Carrick explained, “it’s only one game, and I don’t think it’s right to overanalyse it in terms of next season or the squad as a whole. We already know the quality we have, what the squad looks like, and the areas where we need to improve. One result today doesn’t suddenly change our thinking on any of that.” Offended The United manager bristled at the next question, which suggested the players were already in an “on the beach” mentality after securing a return to the Champions League in last Sunday’s 3-2 win over Liverpool. Carrick asserted, “honestly, I almost get offended by that suggestion because of how the players prepared and approached the game. Sunderland made it very difficult for us, and if the players weren’t focused or motivated, we lose that game today.” He continued, “the players have a lot of pride in themselves, in each other, and in representing this club. Motivation and focus are definitely not issues. Some performances will naturally be more difficult than others, but it won’t be because the players aren’t committed.” Injury update Carrick also provided an update on Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko, who both missed the match owing to injury. He explained, “we’ll assess them, but Casemiro should be fine. It’s nothing major and he should be okay for next week. Ben has been managing a shin problem for a little while now, so we just need to handle that carefully and decide what’s best for him.” There was controversy late in the game when Nilson Angulo seemed to unnecessarily extend his arm into Bruno Fernandes’ face. The Sunderland player escaped a card when United wanted to see a red. Giving his take on the incident, Carrick stated, “I haven’t seen it back myself yet. Bruno said he felt there was contact and wasn’t too happy about it afterwards. The staff on the bench weren’t pleased either. At the moment, though, I’m a little confused about some of the decisions we’re seeing, so it’s probably better for me to stay out of it.” The manager was finally asked if his team found the North-East atmospheres hard after losing to Newcastle 1-2 in March and being outplayed by Sunderland. He retorted, “I wouldn’t say the players struggle with the atmosphere. These players are used to playing in all kinds of environments. I just think they were two separate games against good teams. We’ve also played away in difficult atmospheres before and had good results. You have to take each game on its own merits.” Featured image George Wood via Getty Images The Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. £100M Forward Set To Become “Leading” Transfer Target For Michael Carrick If Man Utd Keep Him In Charge

BACK Man Utd manager Michael Carrick wants Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers to become one of the club’s “leading targets” for the summer transfer window, according to journalist Ben Jacobs. While Carrick is still currently in interim charge of the Red Devils until the end of the season, there is now an expectation that he will get the job on a permanent basis. If that happens, Jacobs claims he will push hard for United to make a move for the England international: “Rogers, if Michael Carrick gets the [permanent head coach] job, is going to become, I think, one of United’s leading targets in that [left-wing] position.” Man Utd will have competition for the player The Telegraph reported last month that the Red Devils are just one of four high-profile clubs who are hoping to secure the signature of Rogers this summer. Arsenal, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are also said to be weighing up moves for the 23-year-old. Out of the three, you would say that Chelsea are unlikely to pose much of a threat as the Blues won’t have Champions League football next season. Arsenal, meanwhile, reportedly need to raise funds through player sales before shelling out large sums on new additions. Will Wilcox prioritise a move for Rogers? While Carrick is clearly a fan of the Aston Villa forward, he is not the only one making decisions on recruitment. Director of Football Jason Wilcox will also have a big say. Reinforcing the left flank is on his to-do list, but the transfer budget will only stretch so far. Signing players for central midfield and left-back are on the agenda too. With Rogers’ asking price said to be in the £100m range, it remains to be seen whether United would be willing to pay that much for him when other purchases need to be made as well. Carrick reveals United midfielder has picked up a back injury, knock comes at the worst possible time – report

Manchester United made wholesale changes and were quite lucky to escape the Stadium of Light with a point on Saturday. Sunderland were, by far, the better team and were kept at bay by Senne Lammens single-handedly at times. Fringe stars like Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee disappointed while Amad’s downward spiral continued. Michael Carrick made a couple of surprising calls, none more so than playing Mount alongside Kobbie Mainoo, while both Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte missed out. Manuel Ugarte injury fear As revealed by the caretaker head coach to MUTV, the Brazilian’s issue is not too serious, while the Uruguayan picked up a back injury during training. “Case, he’ll be fine for next week, it’s nothing major. Manu had a problem with his back in training, so that’s the issues ironed out.” With Carrick open to handing minutes to underutilised stars, this was the perfect opportunity for the 25-year-old to try and impress. But his injury comes at the worst possible time. Whether the Uruguayan’s injury is a serious one remains to be seen. He has started only once under Carrick, the 1-2 defeat to Leeds. The former Paris Saint-Germain ace has been one of the most disappointing signings in recent history, and INEOS are looking to offload him amid interest from Turkiye, Italy, and the Netherlands. Injury crisis Should their valuation not be met, Manuel Ugarte could be kept on as fourth-choice midfielder, with the Red Devils expected to sign as many as three midfielders in the summer. Another injury concern is that of Benjamin Sesko. He was subbed off at half-time against Liverpool and failed to make the trip to Sunderland despite rumours of him shaking off his knock. On the Slovenian, Carrick said, “Ben’s been carrying a shin problem for some time and he took quite a big bang on it, obviously had to come off last week. So, he wasn’t ready today.” Luke Shaw, who started the draw against the Black Cats, was also spotted limping heavily as he left the ground. This is more cause for concern for the head coach. Manchester United escaped the Stadium of Light with a fortuitous 0-0 draw after Sunderland failed to take their chances. The hosts created several openings, but Senne Lammens stood tall between the posts to ensure the Red Devils earned a point on the road. Michael Carrick will have been left disappointed with the performances of his fringe stars, Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee, after they got a chance to impress but failed to grasp the opportunity. Amad’s form is also a cause for concern for the caretaker head coach, as is the current injury crisis at the club. Another injury scare for United Benjamin Sesko missed out despite reports of the Slovenian being part of the matchday squad, while Casemiro was also rested for the game against the Black Cats. Luke Shaw spotted limping badly He has started in all 36 Premier League games so far, a feat he has never achieved for the 20-time English league champions in 12 years. The England international will be desperate to start the remaining two games and prove his injury troubles are a thing of the past. The 30-year-old’s current deal expires in 2027, and it remains to be seen if Luke Shaw will earn a new contract. Decision made on Mason Greenwood’s reunion with De Zerbi as United hope for big-money deal – report

Manchester United are preparing for a vital summer, during which they are expected to invest heavily in the squad. A new midfielder remains at the top of the Red Devils’ priority list, with INEOS determined to sign a proper replacement for the outgoing Casemiro. Having invested over £200 million in four players last summer, the English giants may need to spend a similar amount once again this year. They could be tempted to sign more than one midfielder, especially with Manuel Ugarte’s future also uncertain. United, as such, have to raise funds to ensure their finances are in order to facilitate the summer’s activity. Securing qualification for next season’s Champions League could help bring in around £70 million, while recent reports have suggested that INEOS are hoping to raise around £100 million from player sales as well. Another source of funds could be sell-on clauses inserted in the contracts of former players. One former academy star whose future could impact the Red Devils’ summer budget is Mason Greenwood. Greenwood’s rise and fall at Old Trafford Greenwood was once considered the future of United’s attack. A product of the club’s fabled academy, the Englishman caught the imagination of fans with his exquisite finishing, two-footedness, and pace. He appeared destined for Old Trafford stardom before off-field issues derailed his career. After a loan spell with Getafe in LaLiga, Greenwood moved to Marseille permanently in the summer of 2024 and has already made a name for himself in France. This season, the 24 year old has registered 25 goals and 10 assists in 43 appearances across all competitions for the Ligue 1 club. Greenwood’s form has ignited talk of a move away from the Stade Velodrome this summer amid rumours that he remains unsettled at the club. With former Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi taking charge at Tottenham Hotspur in March this year, there have also been talks of the Englishman’s possible return to the Premier League. An update on the matter has now emerged. England return unlikely According to TEAMtalk, Greenwood is unlikely to return to the Premier League this summer. The report states: “Mason Greenwood is heading towards a Marseille exit this summer following a breakdown in his relationship with the club, TEAMtalk understands, but he is unlikely to be heading back to the Premier League.” “Sources have confirmed to us that tensions have developed internally and Greenwood’s relationship with Marseille boss Habib Beye has deteriorated significantly, whilst some have questioned his commitment in training and games. Sources have told us that the growing friction has now placed Greenwood on course to leave Marseille during the upcoming transfer window.” The report insists that a move to Spurs is unlikely, adding: “There had been some speculation surrounding a possible reunion with former Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi, who is now in charge at Tottenham Hotspur. However, we understand Spurs are not currently considering a move for Greenwood.” United reportedly have a 50% sell-on clause in Greenwood’s deal, so his possible departure this summer could be of interest to INEOS. The report confirms that Juventus and Atletico Madrid have been monitoring the player all season and are considering a move this summer. Final Thoughts United significantly improved their attack last summer, but could be tempted to add another No. 9 to their squad this summer. Greenwood’s possible departure this year could help the Red Devils achieve that.
