Man Utd: Amorim blasted for ‘massive mistake’ with one star ‘found out’ amid January exit ‘agreement’

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has been blasted for making one “massive mistake” as his side were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle United on Monday night.

The Red Devils were dealt a fresh blow on Monday night as they were beaten 2-0 at home by Newcastle, who deserved to win via a grander scoreline.

Under new head coach Amorim, Man Utd have lost six of their previous eleven matches in all competitions. This form leaves them only seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Amorim was appointed as Erik ten Hag’s replacement in November but is already under pressure as one of the Premier League sack race leaders.

The 39-year-old is facing immense difficulties while trying to implement his preferred 3-4-3 system. His decision to select veteran pair Casemiro and Christian Eriksen as his pairing in central midfield pairing quickly backfired against Newcastle as he made changes before half-time.

Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel thinks it was a “massive mistake” to select Casemiro – who has reportedly ‘agreed’ a move to the Saudi Pro League – and Eriksen as they were “awful to watch”.

“There’s no way, and I hope this never happens again, that you see Casemiro and Eriksen play in the midfield for Manchester United,” he said on the Obi One Podcast.

“Who is going to run for who? If you’re a 30-something-year-old midfield player or a player, you need a younger player beside you who can compensate because you don’t have the legs to run anymore.”

“You need a young player, fresh legs, energetic, who is going to be able to cover that ground for you.

“When you have those two, who is going to help who? Who is going to run for who? So for me, it’s a massive, massive mistake, it’s awful to watch.”

On Casemiro, he added: “Listen, brilliant players have talked about it. We’ve all said it: Casemiro is a fantastic player, he’s played for Real Madrid, he’s won so much, he’s been an absolutely fantastic servant for football, he done everything.

“But when your legs are gone, your legs are gone. There’s nothing else you can do, especially in the Premier League. You will get found out.”

Despite this, Obi Mikel has backed Amorim to get it right at Man Utd as his current squad is “nowhere near good enough”.

“Even if you’re not a United fan, it’s awful to watch them. They’re horrendous. Newcastle would’ve been 3-0 up in 20 minutes. It was a disaster,” Obi Mikel continued.

“Listen, it’s not the manager’s fault at all. Ruben Amorim is a fantastic and brilliant young manager.

“I’ve said it when he came into the club – the players in United, I’m sorry, they are nowhere near good enough to be playing for Manchester United.”

“Like a youth team”: England legend rips in to struggling United with bitter critique

Manchester United travel to Anfield tomorrow (Sunday) to face runaway league leaders Liverpool in a game that will test Ruben Amorim’s coaching skills to the max.

Amorim’s side make the short trip to Merseyside as huge underdogs after a woeful run of form has left confidence in tatters at Old Trafford.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are flying high at the top of the Premier League with Arne Slot adapting to life in England far quicker than his counterpart.

United’s last outing did little to improve the mood in Manchester with Newcastle comfortably sweeping Amorim’s men aside in what was another dour display in front of home support.

As reported by The Mirror, Alan Shearer has shared his view on tomorrow’s blockbuster fixture and admits if United perform anything like how they did against his former side they will be in for a long afternoon at Anfield.

“If United are as poor as they were in the opening half an hour against Newcastle, then you would be really worried for this one as a fan.

“Newcastle went to Old Trafford and for 30 minutes made Man United look like a youth team, they were really that poor. I can’t see United improving that much to get anything from this game and I’d be amazed if they did,” Shearer said.

Shearer says United will need to raise their game hugely if they are to take something from the game and fears Liverpool could run riot if Amorim’s players don’t get a grip of their performance levels.

“They would have to improve massively, with the number of chances Liverpool create you would really fear for Man United in this one. I can’t see any other outcome than a Liverpool victory and scoring a few goals in the process,” said Shearer.

The Premier League legend admits it’s a “huge fixture” but confirmed he can “only see one winner” with the gulf in quality between the two sides as wide as it has been in recent years.

Amorim will be desperate to upset the odds but knows it will take a mammoth effort from his players and a level of performance we haven’t been close to seeing so far under his stewardship.

United fans are travelling in hope more than expectation but will be expecting improvements on the recent displays at the very least.

United Treble winner has a “perfect role” for Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney is finding life tough as a football manager after losing his most recent job at Plymouth Argyle last week.

Rooney left Plymouth after an awful run of results left them rock bottom of the Championship table with just one win since early October.

It’s tough to see an obvious route back into management for the England legend with failed stints at Birmingham and Plymouth now firmly on his resume.

As reported by The Mirror, former United defender Wes Brown believes Rooney should return to Old Trafford in a coaching capacity to help United’s underperforming crop of current players.

United are particularly struggling in front of goal and Brown says Rooney’s experience would be an ideal learning opportunity for Amorim’s misfiring forwards.

“If Wayne wanted to spend time as a striking coach he would be absolutely brilliant at it, he was one of the best goal scorers we’ve ever seen and was a top playmaker as well,” said Brown.

Brown cited the early stages of his own career as an example of how having someone who played his position to learn from helped hugely with his development.

“When I was a young player I remember getting a few tips from Laurent Blanc and the little things like that can really help. If Wayne was on hand to give out some advice I’m sure everyone would be willing to listen,” he said.

The Treble winner believes the role would be of benefit to all United’s attackers with the majority of them at the beginning of their careers and still finding their way at Old Trafford.

“If he wanted to do that he would be very good on movement and things like that, he was one of the best to do it. Could he help Rasmus Hojlund at United? I think all young strikers would love to listen to Wayne and his knowledge,” said Brown.

Rooney is yet to disclose whether he is eyeing a rapid return to the touchline or whether he will take some time out to lick his wounds before giving it another go in the dugout.

A role at United could be the perfect filler for Rooney, who remains the clubs highest ever goal scorer and knows what it takes to succeed under the pressure of the Theatre of Dreams.

Aston Villa ‘sensational swap deal’ mooted in Man Utd, Arsenal blow as transfer ‘meeting’ plans surface

Arsenal and Manchester United have been dealt a potential blow as Aston Villa are set to hold ‘talks’ over a ‘swap deal’ with Paris Saint-Germain.

Several Premier League clubs are understood to be in the market for a new striker this month and this has fuelled reports linking Randal Kolo Muani with a move to Arsenal or Man Utd.

The 26-year-old was on the radar of English teams after he shone for Eintracht Frankfurt during the 2022/23 campaign, scoring 23 goals in his 46 appearances.

PSG fended off competition from rivals to sign Kolo Muani, investing around £76m to sign the forward from the Bundesliga outfit.

His move to PSG has not gone to plan, though. Kolo Muani has only been a bit-part player for the Ligue Un giants and has scored eleven goals in his 54 outings.

Aston Villa star Jhon Duran has been in much better form this season after he came close to leaving the Premier League club in the summer.

The 21-year-old is behind England international Ollie Watkins in the pecking order at Villa Park, but he’s made the most of his opportunities, scoring 12 goals in his 26 appearances.

Duran’s stunning form leaves Aston Villa at risk of losing the forward in January or next summer and a report from Football Insider claims they are ‘set for talks’ with PSG over a ‘sensational cash-plus-player swap deal’.

‘Sources have already told Football Insider that the likes of Man United and RB Leipzig are among the potential suitors for PSG attacker in the January transfer window.

‘Now, another potential destination has emerged for the 26-year-old at Villa Park, in a move that could see another big name head in the opposite direction.

‘It is understood that PSG are due to hold a meeting with the Premier League side next week over a potential swap deal involving Kolo Muani and Jhon Duran.’

Aston Villa also have their eye on alternative targets as it’s emerged they have failed with a bid to sign Borussia Dortmund forward Donyell Malan.

Dortmund sporting director Sebastien Kehl has addressed Aston Villa’s interest in Malan, admitting it is “not at all surprising” that they face a fight to keep the Netherlands international.

“Donny is an important player for us and has been our top scorer for the past two seasons,” Kehl said.

“It is not at all surprising to me that his qualities are arousing interest in the market. Nevertheless, he has great value for us.”

Liverpool legend launches astonishing rant at United youngster before Sunday’s huge clash at Anfield

Manchester United’s wretched first half of the season has left them languishing firmly in the bottom half of the table with fortunes not improving under new head coach Ruben Amorim.

The United players are struggling to adapt to the Portuguese coach’s methods and could find themselves facing a relegation battle if they continue to fail to get to grips with the new system.

Alejandro Garancho has particularly felt the force of the change in leadership with the young Argentine failing to start any of United’s last six fixtures.

Amorim dropped Garnacho from the squad completely for the Manchester Derby with his attitude in-and-around the training ground cited as the reason for his omission.

Liverpool legend Greame Souness is the latest to weigh in on Garnacho’s attitude in his column for The Daily Mail.

Upon hearing Garnacho is unhappy with Amorim for leaving him out of the line-up in recent weeks, Souness didn’t hold back in his assessment of the 20-year-old.

“I hear about Alejandro Garnacho being unhappy with the manager. Can someone remind me of just who he is?

“The last time I looked he was only a 20-year-old boy. One who is only one step up, on a ten-rung ladder. Who are you?” he wrote.

Souness admits Garnacho has potential but believes he must change his attitude on the pitch if he is to get anywhere near reaching the heights at United.

“He acts like a ‘wrong ‘un’ on the football pitch and, unless he changes, he’s got no chance of fulfilling what obvious potential he has.” said Souness.

The former midfielder continued by claiming young players are given “too much too soon” in the Premier League, which can lead them “getting into their armchair and never fulfilling their potential.”

Garnacho will hope to disprove Souness’ theory by getting back to his best in the coming weeks with United badly lacking a cutting edge in offensive areas.

The Argentine was often the shining light throughout a poor campaign last time out and does posses the ability to cause opposition defenders problems when on form.

There’s certainly no better place to get back on track for a United player than Anfield where the Old Trafford club possess a horrendous recent record.

Garnacho and his teammates are heavy underdogs to buck the trend of poor form on Merseyside but know that a result against the runaway league leaders would give the team a huge shot in the arm as they look to salvage something from a season that has been nothing short of a disaster up to now.

“Fatigued…mixed”: Marcus Rashford’s struggles at United laid bare in new report from The Athletic

The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell has shed some light on the breakdown in the relationship between Marcus Rashford and Manchester United’s head coach, Ruben Amorim.

Rashford was left out of Amorim’s matchday squad for four consecutive matches and was an unused substitute against Newcastle United on Monday.

There have been numerous reports of the player having been socialising close to matchdays and he also gave an ill-advised interview saying he wants a new challenge.

The ever-reliable Whitwell has been speaking to sources at the club to find out more about what exactly has gone on behind the scenes.

“On Saturday, December 14, in the final training session before facing Manchester City the following afternoon, Rashford put in a lacklustre display at United’s Carrington base, according to multiple sources, some of whom said he appeared fatigued,” the reporter claims.

“Claims circulated Rashford had gone out the night before — on the Friday, 48 hours before the game — with accounts reaching people at United.

“This, however, is strenuously denied by people close to the player. Rashford is also known to feel he does not behave differently from other Premier League footballers but faces much more scrutiny over his social life.

Whitwell claims Amorim’s handling of the player has been “aligned with those above him” at the club.

He cites Amorim himself speaking after the Manchester derby, saying “For so long, for example with Rash, you try a thing, it doesn’t work … Let’s continue to do the same thing? Or something different?”

One of Rashford’s reported indiscretions was a 48-hour bender in Belfast when Erik ten Hag was still the United manager.

Shortly before that, there was an incident in a training session with coach Steve McClaren, who Rashford accused of putting pressure on him, and McClaren referred the matter to Sir Dave Brailsford.

“The day after the Newport game, a Monday, Brailsford addressed United’s squad for the first time to outline the INEOS strategy, particularly in terms of raising standards across the club,” Whitwell says.

“Brailsford’s talk was in the diary rather than a reaction to Rashford’s indiscipline in Belfast, but it seemed to strike a chord with the player. He requested a one-on-one meeting with Brailsford and the pair spoke for 90 minutes.”

The reporter says that United will be looking to find an exit for Rashford this month but that it will be hard to find a club who would be willing to match his salary. The player is not keen on a move to Saudi Arabia.

He has lost two of his best friends at the club in Jadon Sancho and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and although “He is close with Tyrell Malacia, [he] has tested the patience of other team-mates at times.”

Meanwhile, Rashford’s training performances have been “mixed”.

“He was unwell and off work on the Monday after the derby, before attending Button Lane, the primary school he went to, to give out gifts to children and speak in an interview about his position at United.”

The absences from training due to illness seem to have become frequent, with Amorim himself saying this week that he is once again off sick.

United aiming to banish ghosts of recent years in Amorim’s biggest test to date

Manchester United travel to Anfield tomorrow to take on Liverpool, aiming to stop a four game losing run.

The Red Devils and Liverpool is the biggest game on the English football calendar and United will be looking for revenge after losing 0-3 at Old Trafford in September.

The two sides have played against one another a mammoth 243 times in history with the Old Trafford side winning on 91 occasions and Liverpool 82 times.

There have been 70 draws between the two North-West giants.

Here are three plotlines to look out for before the huge clash.

United dream of overcoming horrendous league form vs Liverpool

The 1990s and first decade of the 2000s saw United dominate their rivals but the last decade has undoubtedly belonged to Liverpool.

According to the BBC, “Liverpool’s only defeat in their last 13 Premier League games against Manchester United was a 2-1 loss at Old Trafford in August 2022.”

They have won seven and drawn five of the other matches as United have struggled to lay a glove on their biggest rival.

What’s more, there have been some thrashings for United over the last few years as they lost 0-5 at Old Trafford in 2021 and 0-7 at Anfield in 2023.

To compound matters, “Man Utd’s run of eight away league games without a victory at Liverpool is their longest since a sequence of nine winless games at Anfield between 1970 and 1979.”

The last time United fans tasted victory at Anfield was a 1-0 victory in January 2016 when Wayne Rooney scored a second-half winner under Louis van Gaal.

United at least need to end goalless streak at Anfield

The Red Devils naturally have found goals hard to come by at Anfield when you consider their recent record there.

However, it is mind-boggling that they have not scored a goal there since the days of Jose Mourinho.

That goal game in a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool in December 2018 when Jesse Lingard fired home for the Red Devils.

In fact, the last time United managed more than a goal at Anfield was in March 2015 when Juan Mata scored a splendid double to beat Liverpool 2-1.

The statistics are even more painful reading considering the relative ease Liverpool have had scoring at Old Trafford in the recent years and is something that must soon be put right.

United aiming to end rut in league form

A scarcely believable run has seen Ruben Amorim’s side lose six games in the month of December, the most they have in any month since 1930.

“The Red Devils are looking to avoid losing four league games in a row in the same season since 1979. They last suffered four defeats in a row without scoring back in 1909.”

Many fans are sympathetic to the challenges Amorim has faced and will continue to encounter over the next few weeks and months.

Nonetheless, this inexcusable run of form has to stop and what better way than putting Liverpool to the sword at Anfield.

Zirkzee “wants to leave” United, “basic agreement” already reached with Serie A side – report

Joshua Zirkzee wants to leave Manchester United for Juventus in this transfer window, according to a new report from Italy.

Zirkzee joined United in the summer but has failed to settle and despite a change in manager, he still finds himself unable to command a starting place in the first team.

On a rare start against Newcastle United on Monday, Zirkzee was hauled off by head coach Ruben Amorim after 30 minutes and was reportedly close to tears as he exited down the tunnel having been jeered by his own fans.

United have been widely reported to be open to letting the misfit leave and he has no shortage of suitors in Serie A, where he made his name playing for Bologna last season.

One of the keenest clubs to be pursuing him is Juventus, whose head coach is the same Thiago Motta for whom the Dutchman played his best football.

It has already been reported by the reliable Gianluca di Marzio that Juventus have been in talks with Zirkzee’s agent, Kia Joorabchian, but now according to Gazzetta dello Sport, those talks have reached a positive conclusion.

The outlet claims that “There is already a basic agreement between the agent and the Juventus management.”

What’s more, Gazzetta states that “Zirkzee wants to leave the Premier League…he would like to return to Italy, to the coach who made him perform at his best in Serie A.

“Convincing the player was not difficult.”

The main issue to be overcome remains the fact that United would like to sell the player, which is out of the question for the Old Lady, who can only fund a loan with their transfer kitty earmarked for defenders. For that reason, Gazzetta admit that:

“After the initial no, the English club has now opened up to a loan but with an obligation to buy. Juventus, on the other hand, insists on a dry loan or with an option, a formula that allows them not to commit immediately, postponing the expense for the striker until the summer…

“The relationship between the two clubs is good, but there has not yet been direct contact. Meanwhile Kia has already been moving for some time to test the waters.”

A dry loan is probably of little use to United, who would be left short of striking options and with no revenue to replace the 25 year old. However, if the Turin side are prepared to commit to an eventual purchase, it would seem that Zirkzee’s short-lived United career could already be coming to an end.

Man Utd: New ‘factor’ behind Rashford omission revealed as turning point after Amorim’s ‘night out’ question

A new report has revealed a new ‘factor’ behind Marcus Rashford’s omission as Ruben Amorim ‘heard’ the Manchester United star had a ‘night out’ pre-Everton.

Rashford has been heavily criticised for his performances and attitude over the past 18 months as he’s dramatically declined since scoring 30 goals in all competitions during the 2022/23 campaign.

Initially, Amorim’s arrival appeared to benefit the Man Utd forward, who scored three goals in two games against Ipswich Town and Everton.

However, the England international was subsequently restricted to cameo appearances off the bench against Arsenal and Nottingham Forest.

Amorim then ruthlessly omitted Rashford from his squad for the Manchester derby on December 15. A few days later, he revealed his desire to leave his boyhood club in 2025.

Rashford was out of the picture for four matches before he was an unused substitute in the 2-0 loss to Newcastle United on Monday night. This result leaves them only seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Speaking on Friday, Amorim revealed why Rashford will not be involved when Man Utd face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

“It’s the same situation, at the moment he is ill,” Amorim said.

“He is not training. We will see in the future but this is like a normal player, then I make a selection. So, it’s the same.

“I think he is going to be out, this week he is out. We will see but I think this week he is out.”

A report from The Athletic has revealed that Amorim and Rashford had a ‘conversation’ after it emerged that the player had a ‘night out’ shortly before United’s match against Everton.

                    The report explains:

‘It was a conversation with Ruben Amorim at the start of December that goes some way to explaining why Marcus Rashford has been absent from the Manchester United side for the past five matches.

‘United had just beaten Everton 4-0, with Rashford scoring two of the goals in a vibrant display on Sunday, December 1. But after that game, Amorim heard the forward had been out in Manchester on the Friday night, November 29, less than 48 hours before Everton’s visit to Old Trafford.

‘The United head coach does not want his players in bars so close to games and asked Rashford about his movements. The England international assured Amorim he had been misinformed about a late night.

‘Three days later, however, Rashford was left out of the starting line-up for the trip to Arsenal. While rotation was at play, those questions over his social life were also a factor in Amorim’s decision.’

It is also noted that Rashford’s training performance before Man City was ‘lacklustre’ as he ‘appeared fatigued’, while he ‘does not feel be behaves differently’ from other Premier League stars.

‘It is a complicated situation, but one thing seems clear: Rashford’s prospects of an imminent return to favour under Amorim look bleak.

‘Two days later, on Saturday, December 14, in the final training session before facing Manchester City the following afternoon, Rashford put in a lacklustre display at United’s Carrington base, according to multiple sources, some of whom said he appeared fatigued.

‘Claims circulated Rashford had gone out the night before — on the Friday, 48 hours before the game — with accounts reaching people at United. This, however, is strenuously denied by people close to the player. Rashford is also known to feel he does not behave differently from other Premier League footballers but faces much more scrutiny over his social life.’

United pursuing phenomenal 17-yo Portuguese playmaker with “stratospheric potential” – report

Manchester United have been keeping tabs on Porto youngster Rodrigo Mora.

The Red Devils have struggled for goals all season and this has not improved even with the appointment of Ruben Amorim.

The Portuguese’s new system has also caused some disruption in the team as his 3-4-3 has exposed United’s lack of wingbacks and dynamic number 10s in the squad.

Amorim has spoken on Mason Mount and his qualities for the type of football he wants to play but his most recent serious injury will see him out until around March.

Therefore United will be on the lookout to improve their squad in these areas. Their scouts have been seen in Portugal, in particular at FC Porto games, where they have reportedly been watching Francisco Moura and Samu Aghehowa.

There were also said to be scouts at Porto’s game versus Boavista on the 28th of December and CaughtOffside claim that United were also interested in 17 year old attacking midfielder Rodrigo Mora.

The youngster will certainly have impressed as he scored a goal and provided an assist during his 80 minutes on the pitch.

CaughtOffside report that “Manchester United scouts have watched over Porto players Samu Aghehowa and Rodrigo Mora in recent weeks.”

“United are also keeping tabs on 17-year-old attacking midfielder Mora. The teenager is enjoying a fine breakout season under Vítor Bruno, with six goal contributions, including three goals, in seven Liga Portugal matches so far this season.”

“Mora, too, has a release clause inserted in his contract, worth around £55 million, but it’s not clear whether Porto would be open to letting him leave for less.”

The 17 year old has been described as “a youngster with stratospheric potential. The Porto academy talent plays as a second striker and has unrivalled technical ability. For his age, he exhibits abnormally high levels of intelligence and decision-making.”

Ineos have faced much criticism as of late but one positive thing they have shown is that they are prepared to go after young talent such as Chido Obi, Sekou Kone, Leny Yoro and Diego Leon, so perhaps Mora could be the next exciting young addition to Amorim’s squad.
