Bruno Fernandes explains what went wrong for Man United in embarrassing defeat to Palace

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has blamed his side’s lack of aggression on their 2-0 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace.

Jean-Philippe Mateta’s second-half brace condemned United to an 11th top-flight loss of the campaign.

The result also saw United drop down to 13th position in the Premier League table, with Palace leapfrogging them.

After the final whistle, Fernandes spoke to MUTV and had his say on the match and what went wrong for the Red Devils on their own turf.

He said, “Of course, we spoke after the games that we won that, everything we do in the past will be forgotten, if we do not win the next one.”

“Today is the case and everyone [knew] what had to focus on this one to get three points in the Premier League.”

“Everyone was aware of that and it is a different competition where we have and needed to win to get three points. Unfortunately, today, we didn’t get the three points.”

The Portugal international added, “We lacked a little bit of aggression to get into the final third and try something to score goals.”

“We need the players we have in front to get more goals, to create more and we need to be able to take players on to get goals from that. We did have some chances but not as many as we should have.”

Fernandes emphasised the importance of positive results on team confidence.

“You build with the results and, when you win you games, you get more confident. Obviously, we won the last two games and everyone was pretty confident on what we [do] as everyone believes more when you are winning games in what you are doing.”

“For us, now it is a setback but we need to understand we have been doing good things and, even today, we showed some good things. Obviously, the result doesn’t show that but we need to be aware that we can achieve a lot with the things that we have been doing.”

United are back in action on Friday when they host Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Alejandro Garnacho: Chelsea chances of ‘last-minute’ signing assessed by Fabrizio Romano

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has suggested Chelsea could yet make a “last-minute” bid for Alejandro Garnacho despite things going quiet on the transfer.

Chelsea are one of two sides who have come close to Garnacho in the last week. Both they and Napoli have been heavily linked with the Manchester United winger’s signature.

The fee for the Blues has been reported at between £70-80million, while Napoli would not have to pay quite as much given they’re not a Premier League rival, but their £38million opening offer was turned down.

It was said that they’d come back in if United dropped their demands slightly, but it does not seem they’ve done that.

Things have also gone quiet on the Chelsea front, and transfer insider Romano states things aren’t progressing at the moment, but has not ruled out the potential of a late Blues offer.

“There is interest from Chelsea, but at the moment, there are still no advanced negotiations, club-to-club,” he told GIVEMESPORT.

“Let’s see if Chelsea will decide to do something last-minute. But as of now, while we are recording, there is still no proposal so there is still a chance for him to stay.”

United seem happy to keep Garnacho at the club. Though he’s not untouchable – as it seems no United player is – Ruben Amorim is continuing to pick him.

The winger has started the last two Premier League games, and Amorim recently stated Garnacho’s attitude had improved markedly since he was left out of the Manchester derby in December.

“He [Garnacho] is not improving because of me. He changed from the game against City [where he was not in the squad]. The way he understands things and the way he understands that I just want to help him, win games,” he saud.

“He has changed completely. He understands sometimes that I am a different coach, that I am demanding in my own way and he understands that it is never in a bad way, that it is for his own good. I think all the credit goes to Garnacho. He is improving and we want to continue to improve with Garnacho.”

Former history-making United wonderkid opens up on possibility of sensational Old Trafford return

FC Utrecht star and former Manchester United midfielder Zidane Iqbal has insisted he’s currently not concerning himself with thoughts about a potential return to Old Trafford.

In 2023, United accepted an offer worth around €1million from Utrecht to permanently part ways with Iqbal, who had changed agencies to find a new club.

Iqbal put pen to paper on a four-year deal with the Eredivisie club.

The player joined United’s academy at the age of nine and made history, becoming the first British South Asian footballer to represent the club when making his senior debut against BSC Young Boys in December 2021 in the Champions League.

Iqbal’s decision to leave United was motivated by a desire to secure guaranteed first-team opportunities elsewhere.

He had a very quiet first season at Stadion Galgenwaard, partly due to injuries, but his fortunes have significantly improved this campaign. So far this term, he has made 11 top-flight appearances.

The Iraq international has featured on 14 occasions across all competitions. Utrecht are currently in third place in the Eredivisie, eight points behind table leaders PSV Eindhoven and six adrift of Ajax in second.

Iqbal spoke to Algemeen Dagblad [via Utrecht Fans] and was asked about the possibility of making a sensational return to United, who have a buy-back option.

He responded, “To be honest: I don’t look that far. I’m not concerned with the future.”

“I leave that to God. I live in the now, take each day as it comes and enjoy, especially after that difficult first year.”

He added, “The fact that I can play football for FC Utrecht. Hopefully, we qualify for European football this season.”

On his difficult start to life at FC Utrecht, Iqbal remarked, “The beginning was difficult. I lived in a hotel, then in a temporary apartment. I had to get used to the Netherlands, missed my family and also got injured.”

“Now I’m happy and enjoying myself.”

Man Utd 0-2 Crystal Palace: United limit themselves with odd striker call preceding latest loss

Manchester United were beaten 2-0 by fellow mid-table side Crystal Palace, after a confusing decision from Ruben Amorim regarding the non-selection of strikers.

If United‘s forward woes were not already apparent, this game offered up further evidence. Over £100million worth of striker talent in Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund was left on the bench from the start, with 19-year-old midfielder Kobbie Mainoo spending much of the game the furthest up the field.

In the first half, of United’s 10 shots, a grand total of zero found their way towards Dean Henderson’s goal and only two did in the second half.

Palace’s radar was not much better configured, but they crucially made two of their shots count, firstly when Maxence Lacroix rose above the United defence in the 64th minute and hit the crossbar, with the ball falling to Jean-Philippe Mateta to open the scoring for the Eagles.

The same man put the final nail in United’s coffin just before the 90 minutes were up by tapping in a move begun by a poor Zirkzee pass.

Now 13th in the league, the Red Devils are crying out for change, and if no new signings walk through the door before the transfer deadline, they look hard pressed to find it this season.

Amorim still feels things will turn around despite his admission that his side were poor against Palace.

“The result is really bad. The performance was a little bit better than the last games. We controlled the transitions quite well for Crystal Palace. We suffered two goals that we can avoid and the injury on Lisandro Martinez was tough for the team,” he said.

“It’s normal for the fans to feel negative, it is a hard season for them but football can change in certain moments. I will prepare the next game and move forward. Better things will come.”

Mathys Tel’s move to United collapses after breakdown in talks with “greedy” Bayern – report

Mathys Tel’s move to United collapses after breakdown in talks with “greedy” Bayern – report

Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel will reportedly not be signing for Manchester United ahead of Monday’s 11pm transfer deadline.

United are believed to have been Tel’s preferred transfer destination even as he continues to draw interest from several other Premier League clubs including Chelsea, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur.

He rejected a move to Spurs even after the North London club had struck an agreement with Bayern over a permanent transfer. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy jetted to Germany to try and persuade the Frenchman to join Ange Postecoglou’s ranks but his efforts were futile.

It was stated that United are eager to sign Tel but only on an initial loan deal with the option to buy him at the end of the season.

A buy option worth around £45m was mentioned.

More recently, Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg confirmed that Tel wants to join United with “immediate effect” although there were complications with Bayern over terms of a transfer.

Plettenberg pointed out that Bayern want more money that United offered. Additionally, the Bundesliga giants were keen on the inclusion of an obligation to buy Tel.

Now, RMC journalist Fabrice Hawkins has given an update, indicating that talks between United and Bayern have collapsed and as such, Tel will not be signing for the Red Devils.

Hawkins wrote on X, “Negotiations between Manchester United and Bayern Munich fail.”

“Mathys Tel will not go to Manchester United.”

Hawkins added in a subsequent post, “Bayern Munich have been too greedy in their exchanges with Manchester United.”

“Other clubs are still on the lookout for this issue, including Arsenal.”

It remains to be seen whether there is a late twist to the saga and if not, whether United end up targeting someone else.

Aston Villa’s Leon Bailey is another forward United continue to be linked to.

20x possession lost, 35% duels won, 33% dribbles: United star can’t continue in Amorim’s system, has the wrong skill set

Manchester United crumbled at home yet again as Crystal Palace clinched a 2-0 win in the Premier League on Sunday to leapfrog the hosts into 12th place.

The Red Devils have conceded more goals at Old Trafford than Leicester City have let in at The King Power, which goes to show how leaky the defence has been.

But that was not the major problem against the Eagles as the attack fluffed their lines yet again despite enjoying twice the possession, and winning 11 corners to 0.

Ruben Amorim was so exasperated with strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee that he chose to start Kobbie Mainoo up front and the move did not pay off.

Dalot struggled at left wingback again

Before the game, new signings Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven were unveiled in front of the crowd and the Dane’s debut cannot come soon enough.

With Tyrell Malacia on his way out and Luke Shaw injured, the head coach was once again forced to start Diogo Dalot on the left and the Portugal international once again struggled to create any openings.

The 25-year-old was extremely sloppy with the ball and lost possession a mammoth 20 times. He was weak in his defending as well, winning only five out of 14 duels.

Due to lack of options, he remained out on the pitch and ended the game with 80 percent passing accuracy, misplacing nine passes (all stats via sofascore).

Dorgu will be a huge improvement on the Portuguese

The ex-Porto star did manage one key pass, but did not muster a single attempt on goal. He completed two crosses and one long ball and only 33 percent of his dribbles.

Dalot was dribbled past once while he managed to make four clearances. Not enough to justify playing as a wingback in Amorim’s system.

Noussair Mazraoui did not fare much better and playing traditional full-backs in this 3-4-3 system limits the team’s attacking output and offers very little help to the two No 10s and striker.

Once Dorgu comes in, he is likely to slot into the left wingback role while Dalot could switch to right wingback. Even then, he is likely to struggle, which is why the club seem eager to bring in Geovany Quenda from Sporting Lisbon in the summer.

“Immediate effect”: Tel has made his mind up to join United, Bayern pushing for permanent exit – Sky

Manchester United’s need for a goalscorer was made even more evident they way the team fumbled yet again at Old Trafford, this time to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday.

Ruben Amorim seems to have been fed up with Rasmus Hojlund, who had not scored in 12 goals heading into Sunday’s encounter, and chose to play Kobbie Mainoo as a false nine against the Eagles.

The England international, not too long ago, was playing as the defensive midfielder, but has now been forced to start up top amidst the Dane and Joshua Zirkzee’s struggles in front of goal.

The selection gamble was a clear message to the co-owners to try and bring in a goalscorer or else the team is likely to continue suffering out on the pitch.

                  Striker needed

Just after the final whistle, Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg claimed Mathys Tel of Bayern Munich wants to immediately join up with Amorim’s team before the deadline.

United’s initial offer was a straight loan which the Bundesliga giants have rejected. Bayern want United to include an obligation to buy or to secure the Frenchman on a permanent basis.

“BREAKING | Been told Mathys Tel has decided to join Manchester United with immediate effect. Concrete negotiations are underway between Bayern and MUFC.

“ManUtd have submitted a loan offer, which Bayern immediately rejected. Bayern are not satisfied with the offered package from England and are are pushing for an obligation to buy or a permanent transfer,” the journalist wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

                  Bayern want permanent Tel exit

Most initial reports indicated United were open to including an option to buy but buying him outright this January could disturb their summer plans.

Viktor Gyokeres or Victor Osimhen are out-and-out goalscorers and are natural strikers while Tel is a winger who can also play up front.

He does not have the same pedigree in front of goal as the Swede and Nigerian which might force United to abandon their move. It will be interesting to see what INEOS ultimately decide.

Leon Bailey and Christopher Nkunku are also options that the club are reportedly looking at. One thing is for sure, Amorim needs help and fast.

Amorim opens up on “team problem” that forced him to make bizarre tactical decision in 2-0 loss vs. Palace

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has revealed that he has nothing against Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund, and the decision to name them on the bench against Crystal Palace was purely motivated by tactical reasons.

Amorim elected to start Kobbie Mainoo in the false nine position – a choice that didn’t really work.

Mainoo started brightly, hitting the post in the early stages but his influence on the game waned as time went by. Eventually, he had to be taken off as United were looking for a way back into the match.

Zirkzee and Hojlund both came on but they had no impact whatsoever, as the Red Devils slipped to a 2-0 loss at the hands of the Eagles.

Asked to clarify why he snubbed his two striker options, Amorim told reporters in his post-match press conference, “Today we chose to play with Kobbie…to use the characteristics of Kobbie.”

“This is nothing against Rasmus Hojlund or Josh [Zirkzee] and sometimes the team scores goals by creating situations to use the right characteristics.”

“It doesn’t mean if we use two strikers we’re going to score more goals, so I think it’s a team problem and we spoke about that all the time. We need to improve our performance in every aspect of the game, especially scoring goals.”

On United’s woeful home form this season, Amorim said, “I think the performance improved…not a lot but I think we played better than in the other games, even against Southampton, I think we played better today.”

“But of course when you continue to lose at home, you have that feeling that the small improvements of the team mean nothing. So let’s go again and see in the next game.”

Amorim admitted that United are trying to sign players before the close of the window on Monday. He however refused to specifically answer a question about Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel.

“We are trying everything to improve the team without doing the mistakes of the past.”

“We will see. There is one more day. Let’s wait until the window is closed. We are trying the best to improve the team. This market is very hard on the clubs. To make some deals here, it’s hard.”

“We are trying everything, guys. I want so bad to improve the team. I know what the team needs.”

Amorim also said about Lisandro Martinez – who was taken off on a stretcher in the 83rd minute.

“Licha is really important for us, not just as a football player, but as a character, especially in this hard moment. Now it’s time to help Licha. I think it’s a bad situation. Let’s wait to assess things with the doctor but I think it’s a serious situation.”

Amorim was asked whether it would be embarrassing if Marcus Rashford goes to Aston Villa and scores goals there.

He answered, “Humiliating? It’s not embarrassing. When you loan a player, and I think it is not official, you expect him to play and improve so there is nothing humiliating there.”

United are back in action on Friday when they take on Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City in the FA Cup.

Football broadcaster Julien Laurens branded Ruben Amorim ‘ridiculous’ as the latest Manchester United loss was ‘more on him than anything else’.

Amorim made the bold call not to select a striker for United‘s game against Crystal Palace. But rather than having an attacking player the focal point of his attack, Kobbie Mainoo spent most of the game there.

That’s despite Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes – both of whom have played as a false nine previously – being on the pitch.

Over £100million worth of strikers, in Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund, played 30 minutes each from the bench. United had two shots on target and lost 2-0.

Laurens blamed Amorim’s decisions for United losing and dropping to 13th in the table.

‘Ruben Amorim’s team selection and tactics today were ridiculous today, as we explained on BBC Radio 5 Live earlier today on Premier League Sunday. The defeat is on him more than anything else!’ he said on X.

Following on from that, Laurens suggested that a new United signing is progressing well. In his next post, he stated: ‘And while Manchester United were losing again at Old Trafford under Ruben Amorim, they are getting closer to a deal with Bayern Munich for Mathys Tel. They are clearly the front runners now even if Chelsea and Arsenal are still interested in him too.’
