“Superstar in the future”: United vs City set for blockbuster transfer battle to sign Amorim favourite – report

Manchester United have obvious problems down the right flank with Erik ten Hag’s big-money signing struggling in his natural position while the remaining wingers prefer the opposite flank.

Antony was signed to fix the lack of a left-footed winger on the right but the Brazilian has struggled to justify the enormous £85 million outlay and seems destined to be on the way out despite Ruben Amorim willing to offer him a chance.

Both Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho prefer left wing while Amad Diallo is yet to cement himself in that position.

And with the Portuguese tactician’s system involving the use of wing-backs, perhaps the solution will come from the transfer market.

Quenda interest heating up

As reported by Teamtalk, the Red Devils are looking at Sporting Lisbon wonderkid Geovany Quenda with Amorim’s imminent arrival making the Old Trafford side favourites for his signature.

However, Manchester City “are very interested” and have been doing their homework for a while now while Liverpool and Juventus are also in the race.

As relayed by The Peoples Person earlier, the 17-year-old’s release clause of €100 million makes him unattainable for now but once the player turns 18, the race is expected to heat up.

“Manchester United hold genuine interest in Sporting CP winger Geovany Quenda and Ruben Amorim is keen to bring him to Old Trafford, but Manchester City could scupper his plans.

City vs United for Quenda

“Scouts from the Red Devils were in attendance to watch Quenda in Sporting’s recent games against Famalicao, when he scored, and Sturm Graz, although he only played six minutes.

“TEAMtalk can confirm that Man Utd, Man City, Liverpool and Juventus are keen on signing Quenda as they view him as a player who could become a superstar in the future.”

Despite his tender years, he is already a first-team regular, with 16 appearances already (two goals), and was even called up to the Portugal national team during the international break.

Sporting are insistent on holding on to the player but Amorim could play a key role if the 20-time English league champions are to acquire his signature.

Bernardo Silva is a huge fan, and he will have pushed his compatriot’s case at City. Quenda’s current contract is valid until 2027.

Teenage sensation’s long wait for United debut set to end as he’s “earmarked for minutes” vs. PAOK – report

Manchester United youngster Harry Amass is reportedly set to make his senior club debut during Thursday’s Europa League clash against Greek side PAOK FC.

Amass has yet to line up for United despite their struggles in the left-back position all season.

The Red Devils have yet to have a recognised left-back in the starting line-up at any point of the campaign so far, amidst injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

Shaw last played for United in February while Malacia missed the entirety of last term with an injury that required multiple surgeries.

In their respective absences, United have used the likes of Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui, Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez as make-shift left-backs.

Mazraoui was exceptional on that part of the pitch over the weekend, as United were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Chelsea.

A section of United fans have been clamouring for Amass to be thrust into the first team following his accomplished performances in pre-season.

The 17-year-old was part of the contingent that travelled to the United States for pre-season and he impressed in all three matches vs. Arsenal, Real Betis and Liverpool.

According to The Daily Mail, Amass’ wait for a debut is finallyy poised to come to an end on Thursday, when Ruud van Nistelrooy’s men host PAOK.

“After having two former youth team players starting – Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford – and five on the bench against Chelsea, it made it 4,276 consecutive first-team games since October 1937 with an academy graduate in the matchday squad.”

“The chatter this week among the youth players is that a debut could well be in store for one of them against PAOK in the Europa League, with sources suggesting to Confidential that 17-year-old Harry Amass has been earmarked for minutes, more likely off the bench, on Thursday night.”

The Mail adds that Amass is “pushing hard in training” to become the latest in a long line of United academy graduates to feature for the first team.

Amorim gets early psychological advantage over Guardiola as Sporting put Man City to the sword

Incoming Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim led Sporting Lisbon to a dominant 4-1 Champions League win over Manchester City on Tuesday evening.

In what was his final match at Estádio José Alvalade ahead of his official arrival at United, Amorim made a huge statement of intent by beating Guardiola, a manager he recently described as “the best in the world.”

United officially confirmed Amorim’s appointment on Friday as a replacement for the sacked Erik ten Hag. The club stated that Amorim will take over the reins at Old Trafford on November 11, after Sporting’s Liga Portugal meeting at Braga on Sunday.

A large number of United fans had their eyes on the Lions’ fixture with City and Amorim certainly didn’t disappoint.

The 39-year-old’s side suffered an early setback, as Phil Foden broke the deadlock just four minutes in. The England international took full advantage of some pitiful handling of the ball by Hidemasa Morita before firing past a helpless Franco Israel in the Sporting goal.

City dominated possession as they looked to extend their lead but Sporting had an answer for most of what was asked of them. Erling Haaland had chances to double the visitors’ advantage but he was thwarted by Israel and some poor finishing on his part.

Seven minutes before the break, red-hot striker Viktor Gyokeres restored parity. He got on the end of a brilliant ball from teenage winger Geovany Quenda, outpaced Jahmai Simpson-Pusey and expertly lifted his effort over Ederson.

Maximiliano Araujo put Sporting in the driving seat immediately after the restart as he combined well with the tricky Pedro Goncalves before rifling in a powerful shot that once again, evaded Ederson.

Gyokeres – who has been heavily linked to United – was at it again, this time converting from the spot-kick to put Sporting in the driving seat.

The hosts were awarded a penalty after Josko Gvardiol was judged to have illegally brought down Francisco Trincao inside the box.

Gyokeres would go on to seal his hat trick with another penalty, courtesy of Matheus Nunes pulling back Catamo.

Haaland also had a chance to get on the score sheet from the penalty spot but hit the woodwork with his attempt.

The result has left Sporting in second place in the 36-man Champions League standings, just two points below table leaders Liverpool.

On a night widely seen as an audition for Amorim, the Portuguese tactician excelled, offering United fans a promising preview of what his managerial tenure could bring.

Even sweeter was that his victory came at the expense of one of United’s cross-town rivals—a perfect way to win over the fans before even stepping into the hot seat.

Ruben Amorim Judgement Day upstaged by Man City being utter toss

“The inferences that people will draw from this game are not important to me because they could be misleading,” said Ruben Amorim, between dodging a tantrum from Gary Cotterill and making a quip about Sir Alex Ferguson that too many people took too seriously.

What did we learn? That a Manchester City ranked as the very best in Europe – even when missing several key players through injury – can dominate a football match against a Sporting team ranked 34th? And still make an absolute bollocks of it.

That a Manchester City squad that cost the thick end of a billion quid to put together is capable of controlling the ball against one built for a sixth of the cost, but are also increasingly capable of shooting themselves squarely between the toes? And then reloading and doing it again.

Realistically, we also learned that turning a match into a memorial to a departing hero is not conducive to the mourners starting the game with any kind of pace; Sporting were 1-0 down within four minutes and City danced through them with ease during a first half in which Amorim’s now-famous back three was very much a five and often a seven.

For about 37 minutes we also thought we had learned that Viktor Gyokeres is really Not All That, despite being the top scorer in 2024 across Europe. He made an utter mess of a one-on-one chance by lobbing the ball kindly into the hands of a very grateful Ederson, before being dispossessed by a 19-year-old debutant.

But Gyokeres is clearly not a man to make the same mistake twice, and his second chance was driven awkwardly but effectively into the ground and over the head of the now-less-grateful Ederson. By the time he added a confident second from the penalty spot, Maximiliano Araújo had made it 2-1 within seconds of the start of the second half. Now it was 3-1 and City were reeling.

This is how we expected Amorim’s Sporting to play: with pace, with aggression, with intensity. And the inevitable inference will be that Amorim’s half-time team talk was the catalyst for a complete gear change. He invited the Sir Alex comparisons with a smile on his face, but the English media will pick up and run with that concept like Gyokeres charging down on the City goal.

Amorim could not possibly have dreamed that City would self-combust quite so spectacularly, giving away two ludicrous penalties either side of Manchester City missing their own through an out-of-sorts Erling Haaland.

How much of this remarkable result was down to the genius of Amorim and how much to the fallibility of a Rodri-less Manchester City will be lost in the giddiness of Sporting beating Manchester City by a barely believable scoreline. And it’s tricky not to get caught up in the compelling narrative.

It’s difficult to extrapolate any meaningful conclusions about Amorim as a Manchester United manager from this result because he will never be in this position again: As the departing manager of champions against a City side that were a defensive car crash. Emotion careered headlong into naivety and the explosion could be heard across Europe.

What we can comfortably conclude is that Amorim will not be in charge of a dull Manchester United team. He will have days when he will make teams as good as City look like complete muppets. He will give shape and purpose to a set of players who have looked lost for far, far too long. He might well turn Rasmus Hojlund into a proper striker.

F*** it, he’s definitely the new Sir Alex Ferguson.

Big name benched and superstar squeezed in – Owen predicts strongest Amorim XI

Michael Owen has given his verdict on the team incoming boss Ruben Amorim will pick when he arrives at Manchester United, and it’s not good news for Casemiro.

Like many others the former striker has seized upon Amorim’s record of playing a 3-4-3 system for his predicted XI, and believes the Portuguese will look to implement it straight away.

Talking to Premier League Productions, via Metro, his biggest call is in the centre of the park where he plumps for summer arrival Manuel Ugarte over waning midfield general Casemiro.

Despite it being a “a bit of a toss of a coin between the two”, Owen points to the Uruguayan’s time spent under Amorim at Sporting Lisbon as the deciding factor.

Ugarte has struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League so far, and it’s not a given that a change of manager will be able to combat this, but Owen feels that the pair’s history will give him the edge over Casemiro.

Owen also has strong views on the back three, opting to overlook Harry Maguire in favour of the unproven summer arrival Leny Yoro.

Given United’s defensive toils this season Yoro would certainly have made his debut by now had it not been for an injury picked up in the pre-season.

And with the 18-year-old nearing a return Owen suspects he will be the first choice, flanked by fellow summer signing Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez.

“De Ligt and Martinez either side are aggressive defenders, they like being up against strikers, so that middle player has got to be good on the ball and Yoro fits the bill,” he said.

“I think if everyone is fit that’s the back-three he would pick.”

Further forward, Owen makes the popular picks of Marcus Rashford on the left and Rasmus Hojlund up top, but tackles the thorny issue of including natural number 10 Bruno Fernandes by pushing him wide on the right.

This leaves United’s top scorer Alejandro Garnacho on the bench.

‘Unhappy’ Ten Hag ‘didn’t want’ Man Utd to sign ‘overweight’ £36.5m Dutchman

According to a report, former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag didn’t want the club to sign Joshua Zirkzee in the summer transfer window.

Zirkzee joined Man Utd from Bologna after helping the Serie A side qualify for the Champions League for the first time in their history.

The Dutch international had a £34million release clause in his contract but the Red Devils agreed to pay £36.5m in a more favourable payment structure.

He had a dream debut, scoring off the bench against Fulham to hand Ten Hag’s side a victory on matchday one in the Premier League.

Since then, Zirkzee has failed to score and has looked miles off the pace.

He only had three touches after coming on in the 83rd minute against Chelsea on Sunday and has recorded one shot on target in his last five Premier League appearances.

It has been very difficult for Zirkzee, who is already being linked with a return to Italy amidst reported interest from Juventus. The Old Lady are now managed by the 23-year-old’s boss at Bologna, Thiago Motta.

New Man Utd head coach Ruben Amorim might have a masterplan to bring the best out of Zirkzee just as he has done with Viktor Gyokeres at Sporting, though it has been revealed that the Dutchman was not someone Ten Hag wanted to sign in the summer – presumably because he has never played for Ajax.

Man Utd summer signing reported for work ‘overweight’

According to a pretty wild report from Mediawatch favourite Neil Custis (The Sun), Zirkzee reported for Man Utd duty ‘overweight’ and Ten Hag ‘didn’t want him’.

Custis says Zirkzee reported for his first day ‘out of shape’ and ‘it has taken a while to shift that extra weight’.

This left Ten Hag feeling ‘unhappy as he was not his choice of striker in the first place’.

After playing only two minutes of the Netherlands’ European Championship campaign, Zirkzee ‘took his allotted time off’ (the b**tard) which ‘raised eyebrows among some close to the club’.

This is because Zirkzee was on holiday in Los Angeles at the time Man Utd were there for a pre-season tour and instead of turning up to work early, he ‘called in only to say hello to his new teammates’.

The former Bologna striker has been heavily criticised for his performances this season. One former manager unimpressed by the Dutchman is Fabio Capello.

“They run, they go faster, they have a different pace (in the Premier League),” Capello said last month.

“Go watch Zirkzee play in the Premier League and tell me if he seems like the same player we admired in Bologna.

“In Italy, he did what he wanted, in England, he doesn’t even have time to think about the play before the ball is stolen from him. More or less the same thing happens to our teams.”

Zirkzee has one goal and two assists in 15 matches across all competitions this season.

Football chief makes huge admission over controversial decision that sealed Ten Hag’s fate at United – report

Referees’ chief Howard Webb has reportedly admitted that the controversial late penalty decision during Manchester United’s loss against West Ham was wrong.

United suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of West Ham on October 27 – a game which proved to be Erik ten Hag’s final one as club boss.

Ten Hag was sacked the day after and assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy was appointed as interim manager.

In the dying stages of the meeting at the London Stadium, West Ham were awarded a dubious penalty. Danny Ings and Matthijs de Ligt clashed inside the box and on-field referee David Coote initially deemed that there was no infringement and waved to play on.

Despite the fact that there were no protestations from the West Ham players, VAR official Michael Oliver intervened and instructed Coote to head to the monitor for further review. Inevitably, Coote reversed his decision and gave the Hammers a penalty.

Jarrod Bowen made no mistake from the spot-kick, beating Andre Onana to clinch all three points for his side and in the process, sealed Ten Hag’s fate as United gaffer.

After the final whistle, a furious Ten Hag branded the situation an “injustice” as he also accused Coote of lacking the personality to stand up to Oliver.

Now, The Times reveal that Webb has acknowledged that the penalty call was wrong and it shouldn’t have been given.

“The Times understands that Webb, the chief refereeing officer at PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited), believes it was an error for West Ham United to be awarded the decisive spot kick in added time at London Stadium.”

“It is understood that Webb has voiced his opinion that it was an error for the penalty to be given and that the referee’s on-pitch decision should have stood. He will make his latest appearance on the Mic’d Up programme next week, where he discusses numerous controversial decisions, and it is expected that he will discuss this penalty incident. However, a running order for the show has yet to be finalised.”

“The Key Match Incidents panel, an independent group that looks at big officiating calls in the Premier League, is also understood to have judged the decision to be wrong.”

It is unclear whether a draw vs. Julen Lopetegui’s men would have afforded Ten Hag more time in the Old Trafford dugout.

“I can guarantee that…”: Fabrizio Romano clarifies United’s transfer links to “fantastic, insane player”

Fabrizio Romano has poured cold water on suggestions that Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr could be on the move soon, amidst links to Manchester United and other top European clubs.

A recent report from Spain (via 90min) claimed that United are interested in signing Vinicius Jr although there is an acceptance that such a move would be very costly.

Other teams mentioned to be keen on the electric Brazilian forward include Chelsea and Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.

However, Romano has set the record straight and noted that there is no realistic chance of Vini Jr joining the likes of United, Chelsea and PSG.

The Italian journalist said on his YouTube channel, “In recent days I received from some of you many messages like ‘Fabrizio, is it true that he’s going to Saudi, is it true that he’s being linked with Chelsea, Manchester United, PSG?’”

“Guys, that clubs around the world can appreciate Vinicius is absolutely normal.”

He’s a fantastic, insane player. So it’s absolutely normal.”

“But I can guarantee that as of today, links of Vinicius to Chelsea, to PSG, to Manchester United, are absolutely not even realistic. So there is nothing ongoing between Vinicius and any European club.”

Romano failed to rule out the possibility of a Saudi Pro League outfit trying to swoop in for the Real Madrid man.

According to the transfer expert, the Gulf state’s football chiefs were previously “prepared to do crazy” things to land him.

Hopefully, Romano’s clarification will put an end to the baseless speculation that United are a possible destination for Vinicius Jr, who recently came second in the Ballon d’Or rankings, just behind Manchester City midfielder Rodri.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils return to action on Thursday when they host PAOK in the Europa League.

Man Utd star ‘bang out of order’ over shock report about summer signing who ‘regrets’ transfer

Man Utd striker Joshua Zirkzee has been criticised by Ally McCoist for reportedly being “a stone overweight” when he signed for the Red Devils.

The Netherlands international has found it difficult to hit the ground running at Old Trafford following his £36.5m move from Bologna in the summer transfer window.

Zirkzee started off the season in the starting XI under Erik ten Hag before dropping to the bench when Rasmus Hojlund returned to full fitness.

The Man Utd forward has contributed one goal and two assists in 15 appearances so far for the Red Devils with seven of those coming in the starting XI.

A report on Tuesday has claimed that Zirkzee turned up at Man Utd a stone overweight and that Ten Hag – who is set to be succeeded at Old Trafford by Ruben Amorim – didn’t want the Red Devils to sign the striker.

And now former Scotland and Rangers striker McCoist insists that Zirkzee is “bang out of order” if the report about his weight is true.

McCoist said on talkSPORT: “Well, I get it. I don’t know enough about it. I don’t know what his weight is, I don’t know what his weight should be, but if he’s a stone overweight, I’ve got to say it’s bang out of order. I would suggest that’s maybe exaggerating a little bit.

“I don’t think he’s going to turn up a stone overweight with a big transfer fee going to a big club. I would be staggered, if that was the case. One or two pounds perhaps, that he thinks he could lose in the first couple of weeks of training or so, but Jeff, a stone overweight today?”

👉 Ruben Amorim takes the Sporting high ground for Man Utd as shameful Gary Cotterill deserves the ‘cold shoulder’

There was a report in late October which claimed that Zirkzee was already ‘starting to regret the choice he made last summer’ and that he ‘wants to leave’ Man Utd.

Speaking after Ten Hag was sacked by Man Utd last week, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher insisted Zirkzee “looks miles off” being good enough for the Red Devils.

Carragher told the Daily Telegraph: “As an outsider looking in, it feels like United are too obsessed with stellar names rather than paying enough attention to their underlying numbers. That is certainly the case with recent player deals.

“Matthijs de Ligt struggled at Juventus and Bayern Munich, so why was there an assumption he would hit the ground running at Old Trafford?

“Manuel Ugarte was a substitute at Paris St-Germain, and I am afraid Joshua Zirkzee looks miles off being a Manchester United player.

“This is not a time for gloating or ‘I told you so’ but it was obvious after the first home game against Fulham this day would come.

“United kicked the can down the road, and the echoes of when Liverpool delayed sacking Brendan Rodgers in October 2015 were obvious.

“Liverpool waited because they knew Jurgen Klopp was available and he was in charge for the next game after Rodgers’s exit.

“If United have almost agreed a deal with Ruben Amorim to be their next head coach, then the timing of Monday’s sacking makes more sense, even if it should have happened three months earlier.”

READ NEXT: Mediawatch: Ruben Amorim ‘joke’ fails to land as English press take him seriously

Struggling United star buzzing at Amorim’s appointment, believes he can take his game to next level

Manchester United’s attackers let the team down once again on Sunday when they failed to make their chances count and eventually had to settle for a point against Chelsea.

Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho were guilty of spurning glorious opportunities while Rasmus Hojlund struggled upfront on his own.

Incoming head coach Ruben Amorim needs to find a solution to the problem of lack of goals with many tipping the Portuguese to sign Viktor Gyokeres for the Red Devils.

But whether INEOS can afford the Swede or whether the player wants to come to Old Trafford remains to be seen. For now, the Sporting Lisbon boss needs to work with what he has got.

Hojlund excited to work under Amorim

Hojlund was top scorer last time and has similar attributes as the former Coventry City man. He just needs the right system and a manager who can bring out his enormous potential.

Experts have backed Amorim to be the man to get the former Atalanta star firing in red and the Denmark international is extremely excited with the prospect of working under the 39-year-old.

“I’m really looking forward to it. Good ideas. I have seen how they play. I have spoken to Morten (Hjulmand, Sporting midfielder) about it, and he is also very satisfied with the coach, so I am really looking forward to him setting foot here,” Hojlund was quoted as saying by Tipsbladet.

Interestingly, Amorim’s age has been the topic of discussion in the United dressing room as previously relayed by The Peoples Person with Hojlund feeling that could make for an even better connection as the coach will know how to deal with young stars.

“I think it is only good. He has an understanding of what the new, modern football is like. I don’t necessarily see it as a bad thing that he is young. On the contrary, it might even give something extra.”

New system excites Rasmus

And his unique 3-4-3 system is also something the 21-year-old has not played in and he is excited to see what that can unlock in his game.

“From what I’ve seen so far, it’s a three-back chain, and it might be a little different from what I’ve been used to in the past. So it will be exciting to see how he will implement his ideas, and I am very much looking forward to working with a young and ambitious manager.”

The United No 9 cannot afford to get too ahead of himself with interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy in charge for the club’s next two games.

And the former United striker will hope to see more from the Denmark international and summer signing Joshua Zirkzee if United are to continue their unbeaten run under him.
