United star ruled out until next season after surgery, World Cup dreams dealt devastating blow

Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt has undergone surgery in an effort to fix a serious back injury, the club have revealed. Long-Term Absentee De Ligt has not featured for the Red Devils since the 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in November, despite playing every minute in the Premier League prior to that. It marked the end of a superb run of form for the Netherlands international, which saw him scoop up the club’s Player of the Month award. Predictably, in the 26-year-old centre-back’s absence, the team suffered, with then-head coach Ruben Amorim struggling to find a replacement who understood the three-at-the-back system as well as he did. United managed only two wins from the following eight matches, a downturn in form which eventually cost Amorim his job in early January after an explosive fallout with sporting director Jason Wilcox. De Ligt is yet to feature under interim boss Michael Carrick, who took charge of the team and has impressed his bosses so much that he has been offered the job permanently. The 44-year-old Englishman has been coy on De Ligt’s recovery, stating last month that the club’s medical staff were taking a cautious approach given the complicated nature of back injuries. But there was fresh optimism after he returned to training on grass at Carrington a few weeks ago. Ruled out until next season However, there were murmurings that even if De Ligt returned to full fitness, United would elect against a return until next season, particularly as Champions League qualification is already secured. Now, there has been official confirmation from the club that the Dutchman will play no further part in this campaign after undergoing surgery for his back. “Matthijs de Ligt has undergone successful surgery to address a back injury. Having diligently worked throughout his rehabilitation process, the decision was made that a corrective procedure was the best course of action,” the statement reads. The former Bayern Munich star will “now begin a new phase of his recovery and is expected to return for United in the early stages of the 2026/27 season.” The release on the club’s website included De Ligt’s reaction: “Since November I have done everything, pushing myself in every session and exploring every option, to get back to doing what I love, playing football. “I am grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout a difficult period in my career. I remain as determined as ever to represent Manchester United and play in front of our incredible supporters as soon as possible.” “Everyone at Manchester United wishes Matthijs well for his recovery and will continue supporting him every step of the way.” It is a heart-breaking update for De Ligt as it rules out the prospect of representing his country at the World Cup this summer. A return date of the “early stages” of next season suggests the injury remains a complicated one to rehabilitate from, even after the brave step to go under the knife. “Best lessons are learned from losing”: United wonderkid star delivers classy response to cup final heartbreak vs City

Manchester United U18s suffered a devastating 2-1 loss against local rivals Manchester City in the FA Youth Cup Final on Thursday. However, despite the defeat, promising youngster JJ Gabriel demonstrated professionalism and maturity by showing his class in his post-match comments. The final was embroiled in controversy before a ball was even kicked, after City opted to host the final at the Joie Stadium instead of the Etihad Stadium, despite the fact that the Joie Stadium has a capacity of fewer than seven thousand. The manager of United’s U18 team, Darren Fletcher, was disappointed by the decision. The Red Devils offered to host the game at Old Trafford, which would have allowed more fans to attend the spectacle, but City rejected the proposal, leading to a crowd that was ten times smaller than the last time the final was hosted at United’s iconic stadium. A disappointing day Expectations were high for the final, with interim head coach Michael Carrick watching from the stands alongside United’s talismanic captain Bruno Fernandes, Premier League ever-present Luke Shaw, and the always energetic Mason Mount. United found themselves behind in the first half when Floyd Samba opened the scoring. The Red Devils responded brilliantly to the setback, though, equalising immediately when Godwill Kukonki scored following a fantastic assist from Jim Thwaites. The second half looked set for extra time and penalties when Reigan Heskey, son of Premier League legend Emile Heskey, scored an 87th-minute winner for the Sky Blues, breaking the hearts of all those in red. A wonderful season Despite the bruising defeat, the class of 26 have enjoyed a remarkably strong season so far, winning 18 of their 26 league games and scoring a staggering 65 goals across the entire season. Under the guidance of Fletcher, the team have become a lethal attacking force, perhaps best displayed by their 4-1 victory over fierce rivals Liverpool. United’s academy is renowned for producing wave after wave of talented, young footballers, and the class of 26 are certainly no exception. Louie Bradbury and Noah Ajayi have both enjoyed fine seasons, scoring eight and nine goals respectively, but the jewel in the squad’s crown is JJ Gabriel, a supremely skilled 15-year-old who has found the back of the net a whopping 26 times this season. Many believe JJ Gabriel will be ready for first-team football next season, and while we will have to wait and see whether Michael Carrick opts to integrate him into the squad next season, Gabriel certainly has the attitude required to represent the Red Devils at the highest level. A classy response Gabriel showed that he is mature beyond his years by posting a respectful and composed response to the game on social media. He wrote: “You win some you lose some. Best lessons are learned from losing. [I] Didn’t come this far to only go this far. On a personal note, delighted to win Premier League U18 Player of The Season as [an] U15.” “One last thing to do on Sunday at Old Trafford then can’t wait to have a break. See you next season [flexed bicep emoji].” He then went on to quote legendary basketball star Michael Jordan by saying: “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” With the combination of deadly finishing and a thoroughly professional outlook on the game, JJ Gabriel can surely follow in the footsteps of academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo and eventually become a mainstay in the first team. “Here we go!”: Carrick confirmed as permanent United manager – Fabrizio Romano

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Michael Carrick’s appointment as the next permanent head coach of Manchester United. Set to stay Carrick has done a fantastic job ever since his arrival as Ruben Amorim’s replacement in January. The legendary midfielder has taken charge of 15 games, winning 10, drawing three and losing two. He secured Champions League victory for United after masterminding the 3-2 victory over bitter rivals Liverpool. Carrick has also bagged victories over Arsenal, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. While he was consistently mentioned as the frontrunner for the position, United maintained that they would not make a knee-jerk decision and an appointment would only get over the line upon careful consideration of all available and suitable options. However, in recent days, it became painfully obvious that the job was Carrick’s to lose. Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic relayed that the football department was set to recommend to the executive committee that Carrick be kept on. It’s understood that Carrick is in line to sign an initial two-year deal with the option of an additional 12 months. Now, Romano has confirmed that everything is in place for Carrick to carry on, even revealing the news with his famous “here we go” catchphrase. Romano update Romano wrote on X, “Michael Carrick will stay at Manchester United as permanent manager, confirmed.” “Direction clear for weeks, plan also approved by Sir Jim Ratfliffe and new deal set to be signed soon.” “New deal for 2 years plus option to extend or directly 3 years, but no doubts: Carrick says yes and will sign the contract.” 🚨 Michael Carrick will stay at Manchester United as permanent manager, confirmed. Bruno Fernandes matches Cristiano Ronaldo after landing prestigious honour

Bruno Fernandes has already etched his name into Manchester United folklore since arriving at Old Trafford in January 2020. The Portuguese maestro has aged like fine wine and defied expectations this season. Fernandes’ impact at the Theatre of Dreams is evident by his winning the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year Award in 2020 despite playing only half a season. Since then, the former Sporting midfielder has been the Red Devils’ go-to man, the one-stop solution to all their creative woes. No player has created more chances in the Premier League than the 31 year old since his arrival. Fernandes was also a rare shining light for United in former head coach Ruben Amorim’s underwhelming 14-month spell. The Red Devils skipper adapted admirably to a deeper role earlier this season under the former Sporting manager. After Amorim lost his job and caretaker manager Michael Carrick was appointed in January, Fernandes was swiftly reinstated in a No. 10 role, and he has been on fire so far. Fernandes’ record-breaking season United struggled for consistency during the first half of the season under Amorim. Operating from a deeper role, Fernandes still managed to influence games, registering five goals and seven assists in 17 outings. After returning to his natural position under Carrick, the Portuguese has turned up the heat and has now registered eight goals and 20 assists in 35 outings across all competitions. Most importantly, he is on 19 assists in the Premier League, just one shy of the league record currently held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. The Portuguese has also created 124 chances in the Premier League this season – the highest ever recorded by a United player and the fourth-highest overall. Fernandes’ efforts have now been recognised by his club team-mates, who have voted him for a prestigious award. United Players’ Player of the Season Fernandes has won the United Players’ Player of the Season award for the second season running, the club have announced. The award was decided by the first-team squad by a confidential ballot held at Carrington. The Portuguese also won the award last year and is the fifth Red Devils player to have lifted it on more than one occasion. Cristiano Ronaldo (2007, 2008), Antonio Valencia (2012, 2017) and Luke Shaw (2019, 2020) have also won it twice since it was introduced in 2006. Former goalkeeper David De Gea remains the only player to have won it a record four times (2014, 2015, 2018 and 2022). Diogo Dalot was adjudged the winner in 2024 and is the only other member of the current squad to have lifted the prestigious award. Final Thoughts Fernandes has already won the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year award, and is the frontrunner for the Premier League Player of the Year as well. The United skipper’s contract expires in just over 12 months, but recent reports suggest that he is in line for a renewal. As the Red Devils prepare for a highly anticipated season, one can expect more fireworks from the Portuguese Magnifico. “Should never have been like that”: Fletcher blasts FA over farcical scenes in Youth Cup defeat

Manchester United under-18s fell to a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Youth Cup final last night. Season of seconds United’s youngsters were cheered on by an enthusiastic away end and senior figures such as manager Michael Carrick and club captain Bruno Fernandes. The young Red Devils fell behind to a Floyd Samba free kick before excellently equalising through Godwill Kukonki just seconds later. Nevertheless, United conceded in the 87th minute to Reigan Heskey and lost their second final of the year. Darren Fletcher’s side had already lost on penalties to Crystal Palace in the Premier League Cup and finished second in the league. Fletcher outrage United were already disappointed by City’s decision to play the match at the 7,000-capacity Joie Stadium after rejecting the Red Devils’ offer to play the match at Old Trafford. The United under-18s head coach was in an even worse mood after the game, according to The Athletic. Speaking after the match, Fletcher criticised City’s post-match ceremony of announcing Oliver Reiss’ coaching staff to collect their medals, followed by each individual player, as his United team were forced to watch on. The Scot angrily claimed, “not only to watch a team lift the trophy but also for it to be a Man City parade when it’s an FA Youth Cup Final, I’ve never heard individual coaches be shouted out, every individual player shouted out, that doesn’t happen in cup finals.” The former United midfielder expressed his disappointment with the Football Association for letting the events take place. He lamented, “so I’m disappointed in the FA for everything that has gone on around this game — for the location and then our players having to deal with that. It’s disappointing. We have to stand there, we have to respect the opposition, but not when Man City take over an FA Youth Cup. It’s an FA competition, it should never have been like that. That’s my one gripe tonight but the best team won; compliments to them.” Fletcher also felt that the FA need to take more responsibility in the organisation of the Youth Cup events as it is an “historic competition”. He also expressed his disappointment that it felt more like a Manchester City competition than an FA competition. Michael Carrick reveals whether Casemiro and Sesko will play for United in their last home game of the season

Interim Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has been speaking to the media ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford. With a third-place Premier League finish in the bag, most attention has now turned to Carrick’s own future, but first he was asked about that of Casemiro. Will Casemiro play against Nottingham Forest? The first question was “it’ll be an emotional day for Casemiro on Sunday. Is he going to be available and what can you say about him as he says goodbye to Old Trafford?” Carrick answered: “Yeah, yeah, Cas is available. I can speak for since I’ve been here and met him obviously and worked with him, I think he’s been fantastic for us, for me personally, for us as a group.” “I think what he’s given us, I’ve said it before, I think the clarity helps of knowing the situation and for him and for us to— for him to get his head in the place of where he gave absolutely everything for in every aspect, knowing that it was going to come to an end at the end of the season.” “I think, and like I’ve said before, it’s credit to him for the way he’s gone about that. And just because it’s coming to the end and there’s clarity with it, it’s easy to go the other way as well. But he’s fully invested, he’s fully supported us as the staff with the performances that he’s given. So he’s obviously had some ups and downs like we all have in football and over the years, but to finish so strongly and to see that connection that he’s got with the supporters is really good to see.” Will Carrick’s future be revealed soon? The next reporter asked “I know you’re sick of us asking about your future, but I kind of feel like we have to. Is the end in sight? Is there clarity coming?” “I can’t blame you for asking, to be honest,” Carrick replied. “Well, yeah, there’s two games to go, right? So we knew. Apart from that, there’s not much else I can say. It’s probably what you’d expect. I think the situation is pretty clear for us all. Same as in terms of preparing for the game, really planning for that. And it doesn’t change what I do this week.” MEN reporter Samuel Luckhurst then asked “Michael, again, I appreciate you can’t talk too much into the future, but what has it meant to you on a personal level to be leading this club and, you know, potentially to continue leading the players and this team? Because it feels like maybe something we’ve learned from you being in charge. It takes a unique individual to handle all the pressures inside and outside the club.” The interim boss answered: “It’s a unique football club, special, special football club, and I’m immensely proud to have come back and to be part of it, to help as a supporter. As an ex-player and an ex-employee is one thing, but as a pure supporter and caring about the club so much, to be in a position to come back and help and for us as a group to move forward, it was important to make the big step to get back into the Champions League is good and it’s obviously we’re happy with the work that we’ve done so far.” The following question was “the fans are obviously eager to know what’s happening as well. It’s kind of customary for the manager to speak to them from the pitch after the final game. Will you be doing that?” He responded: “I think that’s important regardless of the situation. I think it’s important because the supporters are my supporters, this club, and we thank them and I certainly thank them for the season and the support and certainly in the lastfour months for however long it’s been for me personally. So I know you’re getting that in terms of the future and what that brings, but I think regardless of that, for what we’ve gone through together so far and that connection I felt, that the players have felt that and seen it in talks and individual players have felt it but as a group we’ve felt it. “So I think it’s important that we have that anyway, and certainly for us to thank the fans and for me to thank the fans for that is important.” Sesko fitness Carrick was then asked if Benjamin Sesko will be fit to play and whether there are any other injury issues. “Ben’s not as straightforward as Casemiro,” he replied. “He’s still not 100% with the problem he had. So yeah, apart from that, we’re all right with it.” What can this team achieve? “Well, you’ve always got to aim upwards for sure, and it’s— that’s just the beauty of football and the beauty of competition, you know, to achieve something, to then back it up, to then improve on things. I think that’s always the challenge, and for the players, for the squad, for the whole group, for the football club. You know, we want to keep moving in a positive way and in the right direction. And the closer you get to the top, obviously, the less room for progress. But progress is certainly what needs to be aimed for.” Contracts Carrick was then asked “how much involvement do you have in what the future might look like when you’re talking to contract talks and things like that? Are you getting involved in that or is your focus on the football?” “Future for, as in the squad?,” he queried. “Yeah.” “I guess in the future for me it’s going to be decided pretty, pretty soon,”, he said. “We knew that was going to be towards the end of the season, if not the end of the season, so nothing’s changed. There’s no big swing on that. That is what it is, you know. And obviously whatever’s beyond that is pretty close round the corner anyway.” Steve Holland’s impact “I just wondered what sort of impact [Steve Holland’s] had;” the next reporter asked. “A lot of people have mentioned him because he’s quite high profile with his England background. What’s been his value to the project since you’ve been here?” The Wallsend man replied: “Yes, Steve’s been fantastic. He’s got an awful lot of experience, you know, and seen pretty much everything before and gone through it in some good times and in some more challenging times.” “So he’s a very wise man, Steve, and says things that really are important at the right time. And I think just general calmness and composure around and for everyone, for me and for my staff and for the players as well. I think all the stuff, the dynamics of bringing, like I’ve said it before, of bringing something a little bit different. Steve obviously is in that role where he’s got the experience for us and for us to lean on, and there’s absolutely no shame in that at all.” The embargoed section of the presser will be released at 10.30pm tomorrow and will be available in full immediately afterwards on theppeoplesperson.com. United on alert as PL club confirm exit of technically gifted star, Ineos have already held talks with his agents – report

Manchester United have been handed a major boost in their bid to strengthen their backline.  United want to invest a major chunk of their transfer budget in revamping their midfield. However, there remain other areas of concern as well. Previously, ESPN reported that the club’s recruitment staff are “closely studying this summer’s list of free agents as a way of potentially bolstering the squad” without burning too much of a hole in the budget. The free agent status of one of United’s targets has now been confirmed. Marcos Senesi to leave Bournemouth, talks held with Manchester United AFC Bournemouth have announced that Marcos Senesi will leave the club this summer upon the expiry of his contract. The Argentina international is leaving the Cherries four years after moving to the south coast from Feyenoord. During that time, Senesi has earned a reputation as one of the most reliable defenders in the Premier League. The six-foot-tall, left-footed centre-back is not only a commanding presence at the heart of Andoni Iraola’s defence, but he is also very composed with the ball at his feet and possesses exceptional ability to play between the lines. In April, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming the 28-year-old’s agents are in “close contact” with Manchester United, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs, however, are thought to be ahead of the pack, subject to their Premier League status. Manchester United linked with Micky van de Ven United, meanwhile, are also monitoring Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven. The Dutch defender, known was “speed machine”, has reportedly been identified as the “ideal candidate” to reinforce United’s backline. Van de Ven is expected to depart north London, irrespective of how Spurs end their campaign. However, the Red Devils would have to offer as much as £60 million to have any chance of signing the Netherlands international, making Senesi a more appealing target.  Featured image Eddie Keogh via Getty Image The Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. If Carrick does not achieve this goal next season, he won’t be around for the next one – opinion

While interim head coach Michael Carrick has undoubtedly achieved far more than anybody expected in his time at the helm this season, there is a growing feeling that the real challenge will begin next season should his appointment to the permanent role be confirmed as expected. Though his ten wins in fifteen games is an exceptional achievement, one which means he has the second-best win rate of any Manchester United manager in the club’s history, things will become much harder for the former England international next season. United’s return to the Champions League means the club will compete on four fronts next season, leading to many more games and a greater need for United’s former midfielder to rotate the squad. This is something he has been somewhat reluctant to do thus far. As reports recently revealed, United have opened talks with Carrick about him extending his time at the helm, so now seems like the perfect time to assess what would be considered a success next season. A phenomenal start Questions were asked by many pundits and rival fans when the club announced in January that Carrick would be replacing Ruben Amorim on a temporary contract, with many believing that both he and his backroom staff lacked experience and would struggle against the elite. The reality, however, has been a stark contrast to those lowly expectations. Carrick not only secured a return to the Champions League with three games to spare, but he has masterminded impressive victories against fierce rivals Manchester City and Liverpool. In fact, the Red Devils have been so transformed under Carrick’s guidance that the Englishman has been nominated for Premier League Manager of the Year despite only overseeing fifteen games. This is a testament to the magnificent job he has done so far. Tougher days ahead Sceptics would argue that Carrick has had a relatively pressure-free run in his time in charge of the Red Devils, with a light fixture load allowing him full weeks of preparation between each game and United’s disastrous fifteenth-placed finish in the Premier League last season meaning anything above that would be considered progress. While these may be harsh opinions, United’s former midfield maestro is going to have to win over the doubters quickly next season. And as every football fan knows, nothing shuts doubters up quicker than a trophy. A successful transfer window will be key in giving Carrick the tools required to get his hands on silverware next season, and with a number of exciting rumours swirling around the club, it seems certain the squad will be strengthened and ready for a title challenge next season. Prioritise domestic competitions United will compete in four competitions next season, but the club should prioritise the competitions they have a better chance of winning. By no means should they write off the Champions League and Premier League, as the team has the capability to go far in these competitions, but the domestic cups provide the most realistic chance of silverware. The EFL Cup also concludes mid-season and, as we have often seen in the past, victory in that competition often provides a real boost to the winning team. Lifting that trophy at Wembley would not only quieten the doubters, but it would also put an end to the comparisons between Carrick and former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær, as Solskjær did not win silverware while at the helm. Many believe the future of United will be bright under Carrick’s guidance, but getting his hands on a trophy next season will be key to allowing him the time to develop the squad into a force capable of challenging for the highest honours.
