Euro side willing to accept £26m offer for “great player” wanted by United – report

Manchester United are plotting a midfield rebuild this summer. The need to replace Casemiro and move on exit-linked Manuel Ugarte, with quality central midfielders, sits at the heart of those plans. Consequently, with those transfer ambitions well established, it is little surprise the 20-time English champions find themselves linked with some of the finest midfielders in the game. Richard Rios One such midfielder is Benfica’s Richard Rios. Indeed, Rios has long been tracked by the Red Devils. Ever since his Palmeiras days, his name has been constantly linked with a move to Old Trafford, and it was always easy to see why. His unyielding work ethic, relentless stamina, and fierce competitive spirit have clearly caught the eye of Manchester United’s scouts. After all, Rios is a warrior on the pitch; he plays with enormous passion, constantly covering long distances, rarely giving up on 50/50s, and all the while pressing aggressively and winning the ball back from the opposition. Back then, in summer 2025, after a brilliant Club World Cup, many expected United to swoop and bring him to Europe themselves, but that never materialised. Instead, it was Benfica who ultimately won the race. He endured a slow start in Portugal, yet gradually found his feet and has since emerged as one of their more reliable performers, playing a key role in keeping Jose Mourinho’s side unbeaten in the league. Nevertheless, despite his contributions that has seen Mourinho even dub him a “great player”, the Primeira Liga side are now tempted to cash in as they look to fund their own rebuild. Rios up for sale Benfica need sales to finance reinforcements after heavy spending last summer, compounded by the blow of missing out on next season’s Champions League. As a result, they are considering sacrifices. As for who might be sold, A Bola reports: “The club admits the possibility of negotiating the sale of important players, even some they would like to keep in the squad. Among the most relevant names are Richard Ríos, Andreas Schjelderup, and Vangelis Pavlidis — three assets with market value and the potential for significant financial gain. “The midfield is one of the priorities for reinforcement, but it could also be the area for a significant departure. Richard Ríos emerges as the main candidate… The need to generate liquidity to reinvest in the squad could precipitate a transfer.” On what it would take to get him, the outlet adds: “Benfica will be open to considering offers above €30 million.” Up for Man United to act At €30 million (£26m), Rios represents a deal too good to ignore. Moreover, with United targeting multiple midfield signings, securing the Colombian at that figure could free up funds to push through at least two further additions in the engine room. Ultimately, a successful midfield overhaul would give this United side a genuine platform to compete on multiple fronts, exactly what Old Trafford has been crying out for. Return of former PL-winning Red Devil alongside these four stars will transform United into title contenders – opinion

Michael Carrick has transformed Manchester United’s fortunes after taking the reins from Ruben Amorim at the turn of the year. The Red Devils, who struggled to win back-to-back games under Amorim during his 14-month tenure, won four on the bounce in their first run with Carrick on the touchline. Carrick continued to deliver exceptional results, picking up wins against each of the traditional top six. In fact, at the time of writing, no Premier League rival has won more matches than Carrick’s Reds since his appointment in January. The Englishman guided United back into the Champions League for the first time since the 2023/24 season, and if reports are to be believed, INEOS want him to lead the side in Europe’s premier competition next season. Needless to say, the alleged decision has divided the opinion of fans and pundits (cough, cough, Roy Keane, cough). In their defence, INEOS may point to the lack of world-class options available to be part of the rebuild in the summer. However, what INEOS cannot say is that there is not enough quality in the transfer market to give Carrick a solid foundation to build on. The spotlight is well and truly on Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox to show their ambition, acumen, and ruthlessness before the first ball is kicked next campaign. On that note, let’s add another chapter to The Peoples Person’s “2026 Transfer Series”, with my thoughts following on from those of my prolific colleague Conner Botterill. Outgoings 1. Andre Onana Andre Onana has not been at Old Trafford since September after Manchester United agreed to loan him out to Trabzonspor, and yet memories of his time between the sticks are enough to haunt the most valiant of United fans, partly due to his numerous blunders and partly due to Senne Lammens showing what it is to have a no-nonsense shot-stopper. It is believed Onana is keen to return to United and prove his doubters wrong. However, it would be in the best interest of everyone if the Cameroon goalkeeper takes on this daring challenge somewhere else. 2. Lisandro Martinez Lisandro Martinez is seen much more favourably in Manchester than his former Ajax teammate, having been nicknamed ‘The Butcher’ for his aggressive style in defence. In recent seasons, however, the 28-year-old has turned into a reckless central defender, so much so that despite being one of the best ball-playing centre-backs around, he is a net negative for his side. This, combined with the Argentinian’s never-ending injury woes, should convince United to cash in on him, with his contract due to expire next year. 3. Manuel Ugarte Another combative South American on the list, Manuel Ugarte, unfortunately, does not even have Martinez’s technical ability to have any sort of impact on the game. Signing a Paris Saint-Germain outcast is arguably Wilcox’s worst transfer decision at the club to date, and this summer is the perfect opportunity for him to accept his mistake and cut United’s losses. Ugarte remains a man in demand in Turkey and Italy. 4. Mason Mount Committing to coughing up a whopping £60m on an injury-prone player with less than 12 months remaining on his contract and then handing him the iconic no.7 shirt was only ever going to end in one way. Mason Mount has yet to justify his much-hyped transfer from Chelsea, and many supporters would be left at a loss to describe his role. 5. Joshua Zirkzee This one is on the club’s recruitment team again, as they overlooked all the red flags and green-lit the signing of a self-proclaimed “9.5” to play as their no. 9. Joshua Zirkzee is easy on the eye with the ball at his feet and likes to drop deep and help build attacks. However, United have Bruno Fernandes for that task. Zirkzee’s job is to make the most of the chances he is served in the box, but the Dutchman lacks the intensity, predatory instincts, and ball-striking to trouble Premier League defences. The pace of Serie A seems to be ideal for him. Incomings 1. Aurélien Tchouaméni A number of high-profile midfielders, including Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali, are on United’s list of potential replacements for the departing Casemiro’s void, but Aurélien Tchouaméni is the only name to have consistently and effectively played as a pure number six at the highest level. The Frenchman is a ball-winning machine who thrives in chaos, helping his side quickly turn defence into attack. The 6ft 2in defensive dynamo can cover ground, make strong tackles, intercept, and dominate duels. Most importantly, Tchouaméni has already shown he is capable of filling the shoes of Casemiro, having replaced the veteran at Real Madrid in 2022. The closest thing to a guarantee of success! 2. Mateus Fernandes While Tchouaméni is a destroyer, Mateus Fernandes is a distributor. The Portuguese midfield gem, who idolises Bruno Fernandes, is an all-phase number eight, who is a powerful carrier and excellent passer of the ball. With West Ham looking likely to go down, United would not have to pay an exorbitant figure to strike an agreement for the 21-year-old midfielder. The Red Devils may need some help from their captain to lure him to Old Trafford, though. 3. Carlos Baleba Carlos Baleba‘s stock may not be as high as last summer, but his profile remains as appealing as ever. The two-footed powerhouse has an imposing frame, raw athleticism, and the engine to run relentlessly. Baleba is not an elite passer, but he is efficient with the ball. Furthermore, the Cameroonian is difficult to stop when he gets into his stride. The all-action midfielder could complement Kobbie Mainoo, Tchouaméni, as well as Fernandes in a double pivot, depending on the tactical approach of the manager. 4. Lewis Hall More than a decade ago, United signed Luke Shaw from Southampton, making him the most expensive full-back in world football. Now it is time to go all out for the next Shaw, Lewis Hall, and set a new transfer record, if need be, to get him out of Newcastle United, who are bracing themselves for a mass exodus with European football out of sight. Hall is the archetype of a modern full-back, capable of making his presence felt in all phases of play. The Englishman likes to drive forward with the ball and dribble past defenders. The press-resistant talent is equally comfortable drifting into the middle of the park. Defensively, not many wingers have enjoyed facing Hall in one-v-one situations. 5. Danny Welbeck Now that we have more or less exhausted all of the club’s budget, it is time to consider a low-cost arrival. A Premier League winner with the Mancunians, Danny Welbeck has found his feet at Brighton, establishing himself as their most reliable goalscorer. This campaign, he has 13 Premier League goals to his name, two more than Benjamin Sesko, who certainly needs a secondary striker to share the burden of responsibility of spearheading United’s attack. It has been previously reported that Erik ten Hag wanted to sign Welbeck, as he felt the 35-year-old forward would add experience, technical quality, and heritage to the squad after spending 16 years at Old Trafford. The Sir Alex favourite could still yet offer all those things under Michael Carrick. Rashford hatches brilliant plan to give Barcelona and United exactly what they want – report

What a revelation Marcus Rashford has been at Barcelona. With a lot to prove heading out to Catalonia, the Manchester United winger has gone ahead and become a massive hit. Fourteen goals and 14 assists in 48 games: Rashford has been a force to be reckoned with in Spain. Based on his numbers and performances, Barcelona securing him for the £26 million option to buy they agreed upon when striking his loan deal now looks like an absolute bargain. But while some feel they are massively underpaying by striking that deal, their tricky financial situation has left them struggling to close it. Interestingly, the Spanish champions are insisting on a further discount, though INEOS are not willing to lower their demands. Another loan has been floated, but United are not entertaining that either; they simply want Barcelona to honour the terms already agreed. So there is, then, something of an impasse. But Rashford, who is desperate to stay at Barcelona, a desire reinforced by manager Hansi Flick publicly endorsing the transfer, has hatched a plan to give both clubs what they want. Marcus Rashford’s genius plan As per Mundo Deportivo: “Months ago, Rashford already agreed to a three-year personal contract with Barça in case he stayed, which included a significant pay cut. At the club’s offices, there’s reluctance to pay the €30 million because the amortisation of the transfer fee, including the salary, over those three years is very high. “The only option the player sees is for Barça to cover the entire transfer fee and, in turn, extend his contract to five seasons (2031-2032) at no additional cost. Rashford has already sacrificed 40% of his salary.” Ball is in Barcelona’s court It is a genius plan, and one that can certainly work. Now it may well be up to Barcelona to agree to a five-year deal, and to creatively commit to paying United exactly what they agreed to. 4-2-3-1: This experienced United side will crush tired Forest tomorrow in Sunday showdown

After Liverpool’s defeat to Aston Villa, only an absurd goal difference swing would see Manchester United not finish in third place. A point versus Nottingham Forest would 100% seal the job. Michael Carrick also seems to be on the verge of being appointed as the new manager permanently, so he will need to weigh up whether he wants to give some squad players a chance or try to finish the home season on a high. Defence Carrick will choose Senne Lammens in goal and Diogo Dalot will most likely return to right back. The centre-back pairing is up in the air as Lisandro Martinez is back from suspension, so he may take his place in the starting line-up ahead of the in-form Ayden Heaven. Harry Maguire will likely play in the other centre-back position, and Luke Shaw will continue to play at left back to inch closer to playing in every Premier League match this season. Midfield The midfield trio is likely to be the same as it has been for much of Carrick’s time at the club. Casemiro was rested last week, but he will certainly start in his Old Trafford send-off. He is likely to be paired with Kobbie Mainoo, who scored the winner last time out at the famous old stadium against Liverpool. Bruno Fernandes will also play, needing two assists to break the Premier League record. Attack Carrick confirmed that Benjamin Sesko is still not available for the Red Devils, so Joshua Zirkzee may be given another chance up front. Nonetheless, it is also possible that Carrick will play Bryan Mbeumo up front with Matheus Cunha on the left and Amad on the right, and this is the most likely scenario after Zirkzee’s struggles last week against Sunderland. Final thoughts Martinez and Maguire will continue at centre-back Casemiro will definitely start alongside Mainoo Mbeumo will play as a false nine Featured image by Michael Regan/Getty Images The Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. “They push us”: Fernandes pinpoints key reason behind his and team’s success this season

Manchester United fans once again rewarded their talisman, Bruno Fernandes. Stellar season After last season’s embarrassment of finishing 15th in the league, Manchester United needed to respond this year. They have done just that, especially since Michael Carrick became interim manager in January and now looks poised to seal the job permanently. There have been a number of strong performers this season, including Casemiro and new signings Senne Lammens and Matheus Cunha, but Bruno Fernandes’ performances outclass all of them. The Portuguese midfielder has 19 assists in the league, and with two matches left, could grab the two assists he needs to break the Premier League record of 20 in one season. Another award Fernandes was once again rewarded by the fans and voted the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year for the fifth time. This is incredible when you consider he only joined the club in January 2020. He has now moved clear of four-time winners David De Gea and Cristiano Ronaldo. Speaking to club media, Fernandes expressed his delight at taking home the award. Grateful He explained, “obviously I’m very grateful for that. We all know we all play for our fan base, for our club, and obviously getting this award from them, it’s always very special.” Fernandes continued to praise the role of the club’s fantastic supporters by stating, “I think the main thing that they give to us is the belief that we are capable to do big things and great things for the club. And I think when they have that belief in us, they push us to achieve big things every season.” He added, “obviously, we all know what’s the aim for this club and to play for this club. And we know how much they want to see all of us succeed. And I think the belief they have in the players is the main thing, and special for me. That’s the thing that stands out.” Champions League ambition Fernandes also expressed his relief that the club was able to follow through on its clear ambition to get back into the Champions League for next season. He explained, “of course, it’s been a long time that we’re not there, something that this club is not used to. And obviously, I think I talk for me, but for every player that is here, when you come to this club, you want to play in the biggest competitions. You want to compete for the high things. And obviously going into next season and having the opportunity of playing against the best teams in Europe is something great.” Fernandes was also quick to highlight the role of other players in the squad and stated, “I think the players created those moments individually for the team. And I think we had a lot of players this season that stood out and were brilliant for us.” The captain closed his interview by once again pinpointing the role of the fans and claimed, “they always showed their love and their support and belief in ourselves. So a big thanks for all that they have done, but let’s finish on a high note.” Bruno Fernandes Stats: 2025/26 Season CompetitionAppearancesStartsGoalsAssistsYellow CardsRed CardsMinutes Played Premier League33338195-2,888′ FA Cup11-1–90′ EFL Cup10—-45′ Total35348205-3,023′ Featured image Stu Forster via Getty Images The Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. Manchester United Women’s season has been a rollercoaster. Highs and lows The Red Devils started the campaign in blistering fashion by qualifying for the Champions League proper. They also soared high in the table, reaching second for most of the campaign. United also impressively made it through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League before being knocked out by Bayern Munich. They also lost the League Cup final to Chelsea and fell to fourth in the Women’s Super League table, meaning there will be no European football on offer for the women’s team. New signings Head coach Marc Skinner has come under fire for his role in the decline this season, but he has defended himself and claimed that the squad needs more depth to compete and handle injuries. He recently stated that the club needs around five signings to bolster the squad for next season, and the Red Devils seem to be eyeing up a player. Andrea Medina Spanish journalist Irati Vidal, who works for DAZN, has posted on X that, “Manchester United have shown interest in Andrea Medina to bolster their left-back position.” She continued, “the footballer is out of contract this summer and Atlético de Madrid are already working on scouting new full-backs to cover a possible departure.” May 15, 2026 United have often used the free agent route, signing Swedish duo Hanna Lundkvist in the winter on a free and Fridolina Rolfo last summer. Former Manchester United attacker Jesse Lingard has had an interesting career since leaving Old Trafford. Post United career Lingard left the club in the summer of 2022 when his contract expired. He ended up playing 232 times for his boyhood club, scoring 35 goals, including the winner in extra time in the 2016 FA Cup final. After leaving United, he spent a rather unsuccessful season at Nottingham Forest before departing England in 2023. He went to South Korea to play for FC Seoul and spent two seasons in the Korean capital. Lingard opted for a change and signed for Brazilian side Corinthians earlier this year and has been playing in Brazil. The Carrington product scored his first goal just last month. He has scored two goals in 13 matches, including getting on the scoresheet in the Libertadores, the South American Champions League. Lingard guided his side to a 2-0 win over Peñarol. The goal also made more history as he became the first Englishman to score in the competition. Shirt change TalkSPORT report that Lingard has now made another big decision. The outlet reports that, “Jesse Lingard has been permitted to change the name on the back of his shirt midway through the 2026 Brasileirao season.” Lingard, “who previously sported his surname with the number 77, has since swapped his name on the back of his shirt to ‘J Lingz’.” The Englishman owned a fashion label called ‘JLINGZ’ but the company folded last year after accumulating £283,000 in debt. He launched the brand ahead of the 2018 World Cup, but the concept never really took off. Mourinho wants to reunite with United superstar at Real Madrid, Barcelona will be fuming – report

The future of one Manchester United superstar could be about to take a dramatic turn if the latest reports are anything to go by. Marcus Rashford was forced out by Ruben Amorim, and after a six-month spell with Aston Villa, the Mancunian is currently on loan with Barcelona. He has just won La Liga, scored 14 times and provided as many assists, and is yearning to stay at the Camp Nou for the foreseeable future. Given that the Catalan giants have the option to buy the Englishman for a mere £26 million, most fans would have thought there was only one conclusion to the saga. Barcelona dilly-dallying over Marcus Rashford However, the Camp Nou outfit have been dilly-dallying, initially suggesting paying the amount in instalments, then asking for a reduction, and now begging for the loan to be extended. INEOS are in no mood to play, and so far, have stood their ground. Clubs like Bayern Munich and Arsenal have been linked with a move should Barcelona continue to stall. What can get them to finally get their act together is the sudden entry of Real Madrid into the race. According to Miguel Delaney, writing for The Independent’s Inside Football Newsletter, soon-to-be-named Los Blancos boss, Jose Mourinho fancies a reunion with the England international. Jose Mourinho eyeing a reunion with Marcus Rashford The pair had worked together during Mourinho’s time in charge of United, and while it was far from plain sailing for Marcus Rashford, both the player and manager share a cordial relationship. And the former United boss feels he can get the best out of the 28-year-old, while disrupting Barca’s well-laid plans. “If there is significant change, though, some sources close to the situation say Mourinho may add even more intrigue by going for Marcus Rashford. “It was reported by the Independent on Thursday that Barcelona face protracted re-negotiation with Manchester United on the forward. Shock to the system for Barcelona, United will be loving it “Mourinho has an existing good relationship with Rashford and there is a feeling he would love to do it for two reasons: one to get a good player he knows; two to already cause disruption as well as a few problems for Barcelona.” United will not mind this latest development one bit, as they are hoping to get Marcus Rashford off the books, including his enormous wages. His sale will count as pure profit in terms of PSR, and INEOS can utilise this to secure a left winger for Michael Carrick in the summer.
