Manchester United’s new head coach Ruben Amorim has forged a reputation as one of Europe’s brightest coaches while still only in his 30s, having guided Sporting back to the top of the Portuguese game during an impressive four seasons in Lisbon.

Employing a dynamic, team-oriented system, he was fast tracked to Sporting and achieved great success with the Lisbon giants.

After a playing career spanning Belenenses, Benfica, Braga and Al-Wakrah, he was forced to retire at the age of 32. Nonetheless, he still played four times against United in the Champions League, including twice at Old Trafford, where he’ll now occupy the touchline. Amorim also represented Portugal at two World Cups, making 14 total appearances for his country.

Determined to make his mark in the world of coaching, he started out at lower division Casa Pia and even spent time at Carrington to pick the brains of then-United boss Jose Mourinho, one of his inspirations in the field. His grasp of English was also aided by completing some of his UEFA coaching qualifiers in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Amorim in action at Old Trafford in 2012, when United were 3-2 victors thanks to goals from Javier Hernandes (2) and Jonny Evans.

Amorim switched to Braga and, after replacing Ricardo Sa Pinto at the helm, set about a remarkable transformation of the team’s fortunes. In early 2020, he led them to Taca da Liga success with a 1-0 victory over FC Porto in the final.

The cup triumph obviously enhanced his growing reputation and, in the league, he won eight of nine games.

Sporting were convinced of his qualities after just 13 games and paid the significant release clause to bring him to Lisbon. The faith in Amorim paid off. After nearly two decades being pipped to the post by rivals Benfica and Porto, Amorim guided Sporting to a first Portuguese title in 19 years in 2020/21. His side suffered only one league defeat across the campaign, and that came after the historic title had already been wrapped up.

The Leões finished runners-up the following season and reached the UEFA Champions League last-16. Despite then losing some key players, he managed to oversee a Europa League victory over Arsenal in a penalty shootout in 2023. With a rebuilt side, Amorim secured his second league crown and Sporting’s 20th Primeira Liga title just last season, and with a 10-point margin ahead of second-placed Benfica.

To date, nine wins out of nine and a goal difference of 30-2 has ensured Sporting are favourites to retain the championship. That record only builds on the consistent levels Amorim has achieved in the Portuguese capital.

Since March 2020, when Amorim took charge, Sporting have the highest win percentage (77%) of any team across Europe’s top 10 leagues, as per Opta. Now, however, Amorim is heading to Old Trafford for a new challenge.

Here in Manchester, he’ll link up with Manuel Ugarte, one of many young talents across the European game who he helped to develop in Lisbon. Others include Matheus Nunes, now at Manchester City, Nuno Mendes, of PSG, and Joao Palhinha, who left Fulham for Bayern Munich last summer.

With a group of high-potential young players at United, fans can rightly be excited at what lies ahead for them under Amorim’s tutelage.

Key quotes: Skinner’s pre-Arsenal press conference

Friday 01 November 2024 11:36

Marc Skinner is feeling “proud” ahead of his 100th game in charge of Manchester United Women.

The Reds are facing Arsenal this weekend in the Barclays Women’s Super League, with our players now back together following a busy international break.

12 Reds represented their countries during the October window but Skinner confirmed in his pre-match press conference on Friday morning that there are no fresh injury concerns going into the game.

The boss also spoke to the press about his pride of being United’s head coach, the test of Arsenal and what to expect from the game on Sunday. You can read those quotes and more below…

Press conference: United Women v Arsenal

Press conference | Marc Skinner spoke to reporters on Friday morning, ahead of United Women’s WSL clash with Arsenal…

I AM REALLY PROUD

“It’s a strange one that my 100th game rolls around and it’s against Arsenal. I was told at the start of the week. I haven’t kept those metrics. I feel there’s a lot of growth happened in that time. There’s been lots of ups and downs, as you’d imagine, as a manager of 100 games. It’s the first club I’ve achieved 100 games for and I’m really proud of that. I’m really proud. I’m really proud to represent Manchester United.

“I‘m really proud to represent the fans, the players, obviously the club. It’s a big game and regardless it’s a great milestone. But I’ve got to try and win the game on Sunday. That’s what I’m here to do. I want to be successful. I want to be here for another 100 games and to do that we’ve got to win and we’ve got to win games of football and we’ve got to win, win trophies and and keep progressing this team. That’s what I’m here to do. So although it’s a fantastic milestone for me personally, it makes hungrier than I’ve ever been.”

WE’RE LOOKING TO TEST OURSELVES

“Arsenal I know have had a kind of a turbulent time but I’ve watched their performances and there’s been somereally good stuff in there. They’re an excellent team and it will be a measuring stick of where we’re at as well. There is no more [pressure] than usual. We play under pressure almost every game that we play because we want to win games.

“I think Renee Slegers has done a fantastic job. She was there last year with Jonas [Eidevall] as well so she knows that squad inside out. She’s got experience herself as a manager. They’re in good hands and, until they find the manager that they want, they’re in fantastic hands with the coaching staff they’ve got. Our players will want to go and try and win the game as I’m sure Arsenal’s players will as well so hopefully it’s a good game. We’re looking to test ourselves.”

WINNING TROPHIES IS IMPORTANT

“It is hugely important – it’s part and parcel of our DNA and what our club expect of us is to win our first title. We also have to understand the competition we’re against. Every action you make, it has to seep in that you want to win, but also there’s a challenge. I’m sure Chelsea is saying the same. I’m sure Arsenal’s saying the same. I’m sure Manchester City equally. I’m sure Tottenham, Brighton, Villa, Liverpool are all chasing that. So for us I’ve just got to make sure I maintain on trying to stay focused on every single game and then see where we go.”

GOOD OR BAD TIME TO FACE ARSENAL?

“Do you know what? I honestly can only answer that after Sunday. There are things that they’re doing really well. I’m sure you’ve seen it. I think they’re playing well. I’ve seen them play well and they’ve got some fantastic players. It’s a challenge for us. It’s a challenge we’ve got to rise to. I don’t think I’m going to deviate from that conversation until after Sunday. We’re going to try and give it our best to try and win the game and I’m sure Arsenal do the same. So let’s see where we’re at after Sunday. But I think it’ll be a good measuring stick for where we’re at. We’ve started the season fantastically well but we’re going to face a team that could either be wounded and really want to show that or a team that we could hopefully try and take advantage of.”

INJURY UPDATE

“The players are back in today from international duty so we’ll see how they lie. I saw a couple of them this morning, andthey seem in good spirits and it was a good window for usin terms of injury wise as well. Both Melvine Malard and Geyse have been training. They’ve trained with us this week, so both have been cleared to be involved in the squad. They’re both available.”

Clinton retains Women’s Player of the Month award

Friday 01 November 2024 11:05

Manchester United midfielder Grace Clinton is the October winner of our Women’s Player of the Month award, presented by Estee Lauder.

The England international, who previously claimed September’s prize, has now won the supporters’ accolade in each of the first two months of the Reds’ campaign.

It is just reward for what has been an impressive start to life in Skinner’s side for Clinton, who made her United debut on the opening day of the season after returning from a successful loan spell at Tottenham.

Who is United Women’s Player of the Month?

Netting the opening goal in the third of our three October fixtures, a 1-1 draw at Brighton, was the highlight of Grace’s latest award-winning month.

The midfielder timed her run brilliantly to meet Celin Bizet’s cross from the right and finish past ex-Reds goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley, with a well-executed first-time attempt.

That goal was her third of the term for the club as the 2022 summer signing continues to make an impact following fruitful loan spells at Bristol City and Tottenham in the last two seasons.

Earlier in October, Clinton showed her quality in a solid substitute cameo against Liverpool and helped Marc Skinner’s side to defeat her former club Spurs.

Our no.8 earned 38 per cent of all supporters’ selections in our latest Women’s Player of the Month poll on ManUtd.com and the United app.

That was enough for Grace to finish ahead of fellow nominees Elisabeth Terland (28%), Phallon Tullis-Joyce (17%) and Celin Bizet (16%), after their own honourable October contributions.

Thank you to everyone who voted and congratulations to Grace.

Terland wins Women’s Goal of the Month

Friday 01 November 2024 11:00

Manchester United striker Elisabeth Terland has won our Women’s Goal of the Month award for October.

The Norway international, who signed for the club in the summer, opened her account with a brilliant brace against Tottenham Hotspur in our second game of the month.

Both of those goals – along with the rest of our October strikes – were shortlisted for the award, but it was Terland’s first v Spurs that was favoured by fans voting on ManUtd.com and in the United app.

The goal, which earned a majority 24 per cent of all selections, was quite the way for the childhood United fan to get off the mark for the Reds and came at an important time in the contest with the Londoners.

With the score 0-0 on the stroke of half-time at Leigh Sports Village, Maya Le Tissier sprayed the ball out to Celin Bizet on our right wing.

After taking a touch to lead it into her path, Celin fired over a perfectly flighted cross that was venomously volleyed in off the crossbar by Terland.

The first-time effort, from the centre of the penalty area, left goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer with little chance of saving it and was an emphatic way to break the deadlock.

It proved to be a turning point too, as Elisabeth scored again in first-half stoppage time, with the Reds going on to win the game 3-0.

Speaking to MUTV after the victory, ‘Teri’ highlighted the quality of the delivery from Bizet and made the finish sound simple – although, its impressive nature showed it was anything but!

“I’m a striker, I like to get crosses and get served in the box,” she said. “When you get crosses like that, it’s an easy job for me to finish. So, that was great.”

In the final vote standings, Melvine Malard’s opener against Liverpool – a hooked finish through a crowd of bodies – polled second (17%) behind Terland’s award-winner, while Rachel Williams’s composed effort later in that 2-0 win over the Merseysiders came third (11%).

Thank you to everyone who voted and congratulations to Elisabeth.

Academy Briefing: U18s in live action

Friday 01 November 2024 10:30

Manchester United’s table-topping Under-18s travel to Leeds United on Saturday aiming to extend our winning record, and fans can watch the game live on MUTV.

The young Reds have won all seven of our games so far this season in the U18 Premier League and are also looking ahead to the second leg of our UEFA Youth League second-round tie against Lithuanian youth champions FK Zalgiris. Adam Lawrence’s side won the first leg 5-2.

Travis Binnion’s Under-21s, meanwhile, are also in action this weekend after a busy recent schedule including a league victory on the road and an exciting challenge at home to Dutch opposition.

All the details are below in our regular briefing…

WATCH THE UNDER-18s LIVE

MUTV subscribers can watch our Under-18s’ away fixture with Leeds United on Saturday. Coverage will begin five minutes before the midday kick-off.

The U21s’ match at Sunderland cannot be broadcast live due to Premier League broadcasting restrictions. A report will be available later on Saturday, with highlights to follow.

U21s HELD BY PSV

A late Gabriele Biancheri penalty earned Binnion’s side a point against a tough PSV Eindhoven team in the Premier League International Cup on Wednesday night.

The U21s came into this second fixture in the competition having been held to a 1-1 draw by Hertha Berlin in our first, played at Salford City’s Peninsula Stadium at the start of October.

This time at Leigh Sports Village, the Reds started off well, dominating early possession and threatening first as Chido Obi-Martin and Ethan Ennis linked up.

PSV took the lead, however, when Isaac Babadi pounced on Dermot Mee’s clearance and finished clinically. While United pushed hard for a leveller, the Dutch visitors defended resolutely until Biancheri drew a foul inside the area and converted the subsequent spot-kick.

With two draws from the opening two games, United have laid down decent foundations on which to build. We currently sit fourth in the eight-team Group B, made up of four English sides and four continental sides. We host Sparta Prague on Saturday 7 December (13:00) and Nordsjaelland on Tuesday 21 January (19:00).

FITZGERALD’S LANDMARK MOMENT

Congratulations to Jayce Fitzgerald, who was part of a senior matchday squad for the first time in United’s 5-2 victory over Leicester City on Wednesday. Interim head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy said this to MUTV post-match:

“It was fantastic to have him today in the dressing room. I asked him what his feelings were and he was proud and [he said] it was a dream come true.

“He is a 17-year-old lad, doing really well in the academy like Jack Fletcher, Harry Amass and Ethan Wheatley as well. They are gaining experience in training sessions and are also close around the team for games like this.

“For them, it is fantastic; for their development, even more.”

Jayce’s inclusion, alongside another seven Academy graduates, marked 87 years with an Academy graduate in every United matchday squad. It’s a remarkable record that stretches across more than 4,250 games.
