(Photo by Matthew Lewis/Getty Images) Manchester United boss Michael Carrick is determined to keep Diogo Dalot at the club at all costs, as he considers him a key piece in his tactical jigsaw.Having joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2018, the Portuguese international is considered one of the most senior players at the club. He has thus far made 246 appearances for MUFC, contributing with 10 goals and 20 assists.DOWNLOAD THE OFFICIAL STRETTY NEWS APP FOR ALL THE LATEST UPDATES & BREAKING NEWS – STRAIGHT TO YOUR PHONE! ON APPLE & GOOGLE PLAYThe right-back initially struggled to carve out a place in the team, so he spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan at AC Milan, before returning to Old Trafford and becoming a staple at the club.Michael Carrick refuses to sanction Diogo Dalot’s departureIn recent days, Dalot emerged as a transfer target for Real Madrid. The 27-year-old is reportedly wanted by his compatriot and former Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho, who is about to finalise his return to the Spanish capital side. But according to the Manchester Evening News journalist Tyronne Marshall, the Premier League giants have no plans to deprive themselves of the player’s services this summer, especially with Carrick keen to retain him.The source notes that Dalot might not be every fan’s Cup of Tea, but he is ‘valued’ at the club for his personality and professionalism, and is considered a ‘real leader’ in the dressing room.Want more Stretty News coverage? However, his performances improved when Carrick restored him to his original right-back role. The head coach reportedly appreciates the full-back’s ‘underrated’ role in the short-passing range. Therefore, MEN expect Man Utd to head into the 2026/27 campaign with the same right-back options of Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui, while focusing on bolstering other departments.Carrington insider Sully also confirmed this news in his latest update on RoundTable. The journalist reveals that Carrick has already informed the club that Dalot ‘must remain’ at Old Trafford. Why Carrick is keen to keep Diogo DalotAlthough he isn’t the most explosive full-back, the Poto youth product has been a regular starter under successive Man Utd managers for a reason.Carrick’s insistence on maintaining Dalot is best justified by the team’s results since the 44-year-old took over from Amorim in January.Curiously, Carrick never lost a match with Dalot in his starting lineup. On the contrary, the United head coach never won a contest with the Portuguese omitted from the starting lineup. Carrick’s Man Utd stats Matches Win Draw Loss Dalot in Starting XI 13 11 (84%) 2 (16%) 0 (0%) Dalot out of Starting XI 3 0 (0%) 1 (33%) 2 (67%) Therefore, Dalot might just be Carrick’s lucky charm, so one could hardly fault the manager for his desire to keep him at Carrington.

(Photo by Justin Setterfield/Getty Images) Manchester United are reportedly pushing to secure the services of Atalanta midfielder Ederson, who has now emerged as the club’s top target. The Red Devils will part ways with Casemiro, who already bid the Old Trafford faithful farewell last weekend. With his contract expiring next year, La Dea is keen to sell him this summer, but insists on pocketing €45 million (or £39m).In his latest update on RoundTable, MUFC insider Sully denies an agreement between the two clubs as other sources claimed, but reveals that the Premier League giants have held talks with the Serie A side, and they were able to make important progress.United also need to find an accord with Ederson and his entourage on personal terms, but the journalist believes this shouldn’t be a stumbling block. Why Ederson is the perfect partner for Kobbie MainooThe Brazilian midfielder has been on Man Utd’s shortlist for quite some time now. United eclipsed champions Arsenal in three unexpected PL metrics since Carrick’s arrival – report

Manchester United’s tremendous run under Michael Carrick has secured them a third-place finish in the Premier League this season. It has also prompted INEOS to hand the English manager the full-time job. The Red Devils looked to be in dire straits around five months ago, with former head coach Ruben Amorim struggling to get results. The English giants had invested heavily in the Portuguese’s tactics last summer, spending over £200 million to upgrade the attack and goalkeeping departments. Yet United endured a mixed first half of the campaign under Amorim, during which they were also eliminated from the EFL Cup by League Two side Grimsby Town. The Red Devils eventually decided it was time for a change and removed the Portuguese from the hot seat at Old Trafford at the turn of the year. INEOS wanted someone to steady the ship and salvage the season before a more established manager took charge at the end of the campaign. They opted for Carrick for the job, and the Englishman turned out to be just what the doctor ordered. Carrick has transformed United Carrick started his tenure with a blockbuster 2-0 win over Manchester City at home, following it up with a spectacular 3-2 win over Arsenal at the Emirates. The Englishman shifted United to a more conventional 4-2-3-1 system from Amorim’s controversial 3-4-3 system. Carrick also implemented two other major changes from the Portuguese manager’s tenure. The Englishman removed Bruno Fernandes from the pivot role and unleashed him in the No. 10 role, and also reintegrated Kobbie Mainoo into the starting XI. The young midfielder had been pushed to the fringes of the first-team squad by Amorim but turned out to be a revelation under Carrick. United registered 11 wins and three draws in 16 games under the Englishman, who has since been rewarded with the permanent job. The Red Devils have already secured the most points in the Premier League since Carrick’s arrival. A new set of stats now outline how United have been one of the league’s in-form teams under the Englishman. United have registered impressive stats under Carrick According to Opta, as outlined by United’s website, only Manchester City have scored more goals (31) than the Red Devils since Carrick’s first game in charge. United have managed one fewer than their bitter rivals, joint-second alongside Liverpool. The Red Devils have also registered the joint-most shots on target (90) during that period, a feat matched by Pep Guardiola’s team. United have registered the third-most shots in the league (234) since Carrick took over, behind City (273) and Liverpool (256). With Fernandes running the show in the No. 10 position, United have been the team to beat in the last few months. The Portuguese has already equalled Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne’s record of most Premier League assists in a season (20). He could create history against Brighton & Hove Albion on the final day of the season on Sunday. Final Thoughts Judging by the team’s performance since his arrival, Carrick certainly looks like the ideal candidate for the permanent managerial position at Old Trafford. INEOS now have to back him in the market, with a proper replacement for the outgoing Casemiro one of their priorities this summer. Michael Carrick’s 2.25 points per game this term (P16 W11 D3 L2) is the best by any Manchester United manager since Alex Ferguson’s final campaign in 2012/2013. “He’s evolved so much”: Carrick lavishes praise on United star who “can do so many things” – embargoed press conference

Newly-appointed permanent head coach of Manchester United, Michael Carrick, has been speaking to the media in the embargoed section of the pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s final Premier League game of the season against Brighton. The presser took place on Thursday, before the official announcement, so Carrick was speaking as interim manager at the time. A partner for Mainoo The first question of this section was “You’ve praised Kobbie Mainoo a lot since coming back to the football club. Just with a view to the summer, obviously Casemiro is set to leave. How important is it to find the right partner for Kobbie this summer in the transfer window?” Carrick replied: “I mean, there’s a balance. There’s a balance as a football club because you’re not necessarily, whenever it is, bringing a player in just to play with one player.” “I think it’s about fitting in with the squad, the balance of the squad. Being able to cope with playing here for different competitions for so many games. So it’s not necessarily— I’m talking quite broad here in general of any player – you’re not just bringing them just to play with one player. “But certainly there’s a dynamic and there’s a balance that needs to be had. And the beauty about Kobbie is that he can do so many things well, and I think he’s proven that and he’s evolved so much in the 4 or 5 months that I’ve seen his progress. And that’s him! I’m not taking the credit for that. He’s done that himself.” “But I think he’s shown that he can do so many things, so it makes bringing players in to play with a player like Kobbie a little bit easier when he can adapt himself. And I think he’s adapted over time playing a slightly different role for us already.” Danny Welbeck The second question was “You’ve known Danny Welbeck during his whole time at United. It feels like at Brighton he’s possibly played his best football. Are you surprised by how good he’s been at Brighton? How pleased are you for him?” The boss replied: “I’m delighted with him. He scored against us too many times. He’s obviously been here, knowing him from so young. He’s a fantastic— I still call him a lad. He’s an old man now, but he makes me feel old, the fact that he’s that age.” “But huge respect for him. I think he’s terrific coming through here through the academy and made a massive impact. And to have gone on and have the career he’s had and still be playing so well at that age just shows his mindset, his mentality, his attitude, all them things, and to enable you to play to 35. So he deserves a lot of credit for that, and I’m really delighted genuinely to see him doing so well.” The transfer window “You obviously had your last holiday rudely interrupted in January,” the next reporter observed. “Just wondering whether you’re going to be able to get away this summer, and if so, will it just be a case of it’s a fact of life now that the phone will have to be permanently switched on given the business that the club needs to do?” “It’s the kids’ exams that are getting in the way at the moment,” he laughed. “A-levels and GCSEs, to be honest, that’s stopping me from booking anything.” A reporter then asked “is there a danger that if United don’t have a good summer in the transfer market, that the positive work over the last 6 months is undone?” The Wallsend man answered: “I think the beauty of the next transfer window for everybody, it’s always the biggest thing in the world, so, and the most important transfer window of all time for every club, I think. That’s just the nature of how it’s been created, to be honest.” “And again, as a football club, you want to keep moving forward. We certainly do as a football club, want to keep moving forward. So I think it’s acknowledged we’re at this stage and the dynamics and the balance of the direction we’re at, where we’ve ended up getting to and finishing in the league. And there’s obviously work to do.” “I know it’s quite obvious there’s certain players leaving that there’s a bit of work to do, but it’s not any more important, this one, than the last one, or it’s what’s ahead of us to, as a football club, to try and make the most of.” Leaders to replace Casemiro “As well as losing Casemiro’s quality on the pitch, he brings a lot of leadership off it,” a journalist said. “I know you’ve got Harry and Bruno as leaders as well, but have you seen kind of sort of a development in maturity of the sort of the younger players in the squad that shows that they could become kind of leaders in this squad?” Carrick responded: “For sure I’ve seen development, a lot of development in different ways, and some of it you see on the pitch, some of it it’s obvious it’s there performance-wise, or it’s there’s a technical part of it, and the players are improving in that regard. But I think I’ve said it before again, sometimes it’s the feeling comfortable in the best way of being here and knowing what it feels like to play here and having an element of success, having an element of a few challenges and you come through it and you understand what it takes to get through it.” “I think that as much as anything, and then you can grow and you can your character and your personality comes out even more. I’ve seen that for some of the younger players, and actually not just the younger players, some you can see, everyone that little bit more and growing when you’re getting good results or good performances. So I think leadership’s different from everyone. I think there’s some leader examples, some show it a little bit more vocally, but you can definitely see each and every player grow when you’re moving in the right direction, for sure.” Holiday plans “I appreciate why you can’t book holiday, but do you feel this job is more intense than other managerial jobs?” Carrick was asked. “I appreciate you’ve been at Middlesbrough. And do you feel like you need a break after quite an intense period here?” “To be honest, no,” the manager replied. “I feel good, you know. You get in the rhythm of working, really, of different ways. I’m sure you have different hours to what I do. Some of you work more than others, I’m sure you do, but you get used to it, you get into the flow of it. I’ve loved it, I’ve loved every minute of it, so I certainly don’t feel that I need a break now.” Guardiola exit The final question was “I appreciate this is not Manchester United related, but there’s been a lot of speculation and storeys this week that Pep Guardiola is going to leave Manchester City after Sunday’s game. If that is the case, what would his legacy be in terms of his impact on English football, and how much of a loss will he be to the Premier League if indeed it is his last game?” Carrick replied: “I don’t know it’s his last game for sure, so I don’t know, it’s difficult to kind of elaborate too much on that because pure respect for Pep and his family and Manchester City as a football club.” “So he’s had a massive impact on football on these shores and throughout Europe in his time, you know, in terms of what he’s achieved is the standout. The way he’s done it and the teams and how he’s produced. Unfortunately, I’ve been on the other side of some of that and had some good results against him as well. So whether that is the end or not, if it’s going to carry on, I’m not getting involved in that one at the moment.” For details of the first part of the presser, click here. “The decisions we take will be in this direction”: Emery confirms Villa’s stance on permanent Sancho deal

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has confirmed the club’s current stance on Manchester United forward Jadon Sancho ahead of the summer window. Europa League triumph Sancho came on for the last nine minutes of Wednesday’s Europa League final, which Villa won against Freiburg. Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendia and Morgan Rogers found the back of the net to secure Villa their first European trophy in 44 years. Sancho hasn’t pulled up any trees at Villa, having joined them last summer from United on a season-long loan. He has failed to secure a regular starting berth under Emery and has had to be content with a bit-part role. The England international has contributed just one goal and three assists in the 39 appearances that he has made across all competitions. His contract at United expires at the end of the campaign. It was thought that United were prepared to let him walk away on a free but a recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that the club could trigger the one-year extension clause on his contract in an attempt to make some money from his sale. Sancho is believed to be prioritising a return to Borussia Dortmund, but the Bundesliga outfit have cooled their interest in him. Villa are said to be open to keeping him but that is dependent on the finances involved. When questioned regarding the futures of Sancho and fellow loanee Douglas Luiz, Emery remained noncommittal, offering only that the pair’s situations would be assessed in due course before any decision is made. Emery’s remarks The Spanish coach said, “Not yet. Now we are finishing the season. We will reflect and analyse each situation. We will decide it, but not yet.” “I am so, so proud of every player and how they have responded. Now is the moment after Sunday to take decisions how we will continue building and getting our development strongly.” He added, “We are ambitious and everything we did is important to how we can analyse how to get better next year.” “I only want to improve and get better next year. The decisions we take will be in this direction.” United are next in action on Sunday when they go away to Brighton & Hove Albion in their final game of the 2025/26 Premier League campaign. Special United wonderkid in line for minutes vs Brighton, fans will be salivating at the prospect – report

Manchester United sealed a third-place Premier League finish courtesy of their thrilling 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest last week. Their final game against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday is just a formality, with Casemiro not expected to take part, along with Benjamin Sesko. While newly-announced permanent head coach Michael Carrick would love to sign off the current campaign with a win, he is likely to turn to the club’s famed academy for the contest at the Amex Stadium. As previously relayed by The Peoples Person, two wonderkids – Jim Thwaites and Godwill Kukonki – are expected to make their first-team debut against the Seagulls. More academy representation vs Brighton Quite a few promising starlets have been knocking on the door, hoping for more minutes, none more so than Shea Lacey. The 19-year-old has proved to be a revelation for United’s Under-21 side, netting 12 times in all competitions while also registering five assists. He impressed one and all with his Premier League cameos under Ruben Amorim and Darren Fletcher, but he is yet to feature under Carrick. That could change on Sunday, with The Sun claiming the former United midfielder will finally turn to the dazzling winger for the game against Fabian Hürzeler’s side. Fans will be delighted to see Shea Lacey back in first-team action Along with Shea Lacey, both Fletcher twins, Jack and Tyler, are also expected to play some part on Sunday. “Carrick has suggested he will give an opportunity to some of the younger players for United’s final Premier League game of the season at Brighton on Sunday. “It seems as though the likes of Shea Lacey and Fletcher twins Tyler and Jack will have some involvement on the South Coast.” Tyler was crowned the U21 Player of the Year, and both the brothers have already made their United debuts earlier this season. Shea Lacey needs to impress to change United’s mind Whether the trio will feature from the start remains to be seen. Fans will be delighted to see Shea Lacey strutting his stuff for the first team again after his last outing turned sour right at the death. There have been murmurs of United being willing to send the winger out on loan in the summer. He must grab his chance with both hands against Brighton to change that narrative. United surge ahead of Man City in race for PL midfield maestro, Wilcox “close” to agreeing blockbuster deal – report

Manchester United’s plan to revamp their midfield unit is already in full flight as INEOS look to strike early and fast this summer. Talks underway for top targets Talks have been held to gauge the viability of pursuits for the club’s top targets, which include Nottingham Forest talisman Elliot Anderson and Real Madrid superstar Aurelien Tchouameni. Neither looks likely, however, with Anderson close to agreeing to sign for Manchester City and Tchouameni happy in the Spanish capital. Alternative options have been explored, including Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, who agreed personal terms with United after advances were made last year, and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton. But it is Atalanta dynamo Ederson who the club have moved first for, with negotiations ongoing over a £46 million deal after a “verbal agreement” on a five-year contract was reached with the Brazil international. Similarly, United are ramping up efforts to sign West Ham and Portugal starlet Mateus Fernandes, fresh from a superb campaign at the London Stadium despite his side facing the prospect of relegation. Positive talks have been held with the 21-year-old’s camp, in which he has communicated a strong desire to complete a switch to Old Trafford ahead of other top European clubs, including Champions League finalists Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain. However, Tonali — Newcastle’s 26-year-old maestro — is understood to be Michael Carrick’s first choice to fix his stalling engine room, given Casemiro has already played his last game in a red shirt and Manuel Ugarte has proven incapable of deputising for the 34-year-old Brazilian. Closing in on a deal Despite a poor season at St James’ Park, Newcastle are intent on keeping hold of their prized assets this summer. However, Tonali has been pushing for an exit since January, with a host of top clubs expressing interest. A return to Serie A has been floated after Juventus expressed a desire to sign the former AC Milan star, while Arsenal were said to have held informal talks during the winter window. Chelsea and Manchester City are also admirers, with the Citizens willing to include players in a part-exchange to win the race. But it is United who look to be frontrunners for the Italy international as Tutto Mercato Web reveals the “Red Devils are close to reaching an agreement with Newcastle”. Initially, the Magpies had set a prohibitive asking price of £100m to deter suitors, but this resolute stance appears to have softened in recent weeks as reports claiming a bid in the region of £70-80m would be sufficient have emerged. If the Tyneside club are now ready to accept a cut-price deal for Tonali, it would explain INEOS’s decision, led by sporting director Jason Wilcox, to reignite their pursuit after previously cooling their interest and why a move suddenly looks close to completion. Final Thoughts INEOS are intent on rebuilding their midfield with the same approach they took for the forward line last summer: by targeting Premier League-proven players approaching their prime. At 26, having established himself as one of the best box-to-box operators in England after three years with Newcastle, Tonali ticks every box the United hierarchy — and their head coach — are looking for this summer. Manchester United have reportedly been working extensively behind the scenes to secure approval from their transfer targets ahead of the summer transfer window. It has been suggested that Ederson, Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes are all open to joining United. Now, another one of their targets could be set to open the door to a blockbuster summer move to Old Trafford. Lewis Hall opens door to Newcastle exit According to Givemesport, Newcastle United left-back and boyhood fan Lewis Hall is considering his future at St James’ Park. It is believed Hall is unhappy with how the latter stages of the season have unfolded under Eddie Howe, who has preferred Dan Burn ahead of the youngster for crucial fixtures. Burn has also been included in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad, with Hall missing out on a ticket to America. This has reportedly only added to the 21-year-old’s disappointment. Hall is understood to be “devastated” by the snub despite enjoying a promising season and establishing himself as one of the most technically gifted young full-backs in the game. Alan Shearer once described him as “absolutely outstanding”. Manchester United eyeing Lewis Hall In recent days, he has attracted interest from Bayern Munich. However, it is thought that Hall does not want to move abroad and would prefer to continue his career in the Premier League. United allegedly have a long-standing interest in the Newcastle defender, with INEOS keen to bring in a left-back this summer. “Very tough pill for him to swallow”: Kyle Walker shares reaction to controversial call involving United star

Former Manchester City star Kyle Walker has given his verdict on Harry Maguire’s shock omission from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for this summer’s World Cup. Left out On Thursday, it emerged that Maguire was set to be excluded from the England squad by Tuchel ahead of the announcement on Friday. Maguire has enjoyed a brilliant season with United, playing a key role in the club’s third-place finish and qualification for the Champions League after a two-year absence. He has started each match for which he has been available under Michael Carrick, delivering consistently reliable performances irrespective of his defensive partner, whether Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martinez, or Ayden Heaven. Maguire’s excellent performances even saw him rewarded with a new deal to extend his stay at Old Trafford. But this was not enough in Tuchel’s eyes, whose decision to leave out Maguire has raised eyebrows. Following the news, Maguire released a statement voicing his disbelief and disappointment. Tuchel subsequently described the statement as unnecessary, revealing that he had addressed the matter directly with the former United captain. Speaking on talkSPORT, Maguire’s former England teammate Kyle Walker was also at a loss to explain Tuchel’s thinking. Walker’s verdict Walker said, “If you’d have told me six months ago he’d have been left out of the squad, I’d probably say, ‘OK, that’s fair enough.’ But I think for what he’s done this season, and especially where Manchester United are this season, you kind of thought that he’d have a good running to get into that squad.” “I think his experience being at all the tournaments that I’ve been at as well, you know, he’s been a vital part of that. So, I think he’s very unlucky not to get in that.” “He’s fantastic and you can see that with how he plays for England, you know, he always steps up, even in penalties. I think I have to look at that.” The Burnley man added, “And for a centre-half to step up in penalties in all the major tournaments that we’ve been to is a great credit to himself.” “I think he speaks very well of just how much playing for England means for him. So it’s going to have been, you know, very tough for him to… well, a very tough pill for him to swallow yesterday in that phone conversation.” “But it’s football and he has to deal with it, and he has to dust himself down and get on with it, really.” Walker appealed to the entire nation to support Tuchel and the squad, highlighting the level of backing they received during the 2018 World Cup in Russia as a model to follow. Bryan Mbeumo admits devastating regret over letting down his United teammate

Manchester United forward Bryan Mbeumo has opened up on the disappointment of letting down Bruno Fernandes during last weekend’s meeting with Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford. Missed chances United guaranteed themselves to finish in third place by beating Forest 3-2 in their final home game of the Premier League season. Mbeumo scored the winning strike in a thrilling encounter that also saw Fernandes equal Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry’s Premier League assist record (20). Fernandes assisted Mbeumo’s goal, but he could easily have had three or four more assists, with Mbeumo and Joshua Zirkzee wasting multiple clear-cut chances created for them by the Portuguese playmaker. On one occasion during the match, Fernandes released Mbeumo with a well-weighted ball that sent him clean through on goal, but the Cameroonian failed to hit the target, firing high over the crossbar. Fernandes fell to the floor in clear disbelief that his teammate had not found the back of the net. Mbeumo eventually made amends but in an interview with Sky Sports, he revealed that he still feels disappointed that he couldn’t help Fernandes rack up more assists. Mbeumo’s remarks The 26-year-old told Sky Sports, “Not that I was not disappointed with Matheus Cunha slid me in as well.” “I missed a lot of chances but the one he (Fernandes) gave me I was more disappointed for not giving him the assist to score.” “In the end I was very happy to score from his pass.” Mbeumo’s goals against Forest took his season tally to 10 Premier League goals. He has also contributed a further three assists. Mbeumo has endured a goal drought since his return from the Africa Cup of Nations, revealing that the competition may have taken a toll on his form. United are next in action on Sunday when they play Brighton & Hove Albion in their last game of the 2025/26 season.
