Manchester United have struggled in the Premier League during recent weeks, but head coach Ruben Amorim cut a quietly optimistic figure when he spoke to club media ahead of this afternoon’s match with Everton.
The Reds take on David Moyes’s Toffees at 12:30 GMT on Saturday, in what will be the club’s last-ever visit to Goodison Park – the site of some of our most famous victories in the post-war era.
We head into the fixture sore from two consecutive defeats in the league, to Crystal Palace and Tottenham, but Amorim revealed he has been cheered by the positive work undertaken at Carrington in the days following the 1-0 loss at Spurs.
Now, it’s a case of putting that work into action on Merseyside.
“It was a really good week,” Amorim told interviewer Mark Sullivan, highlighting the recoveries of recent absentees Christian Eriksen, Manuel Ugarte and Leny Yoro.
“We just want to win. I know that this is massive [the fact it’s our last game at Goodison], that it’s a great stadium with a lot of history. But our focus is just to win the game and to win three points.
“The important thing is to use what we did this week, and I see some things in training that it’s hard to see in our games. We want to bring that to the game.
“That is the most important thing: that we can use what we did during the week in the game to try to win the game.”
When we last met the blue half of Merseyside, in December, United delivered one of our most accomplished performances so far under our new Portuguese head coach, in a 4-0 win.
But the 40-year-old accepted that the opponents we will face at Goodison today are in a much healthier position, due to the impressive impact of David Moyes, who returned to his former club last month.
“I think he’s doing an amazing job,” praised Ruben. “He knows the club, he knows the league, he’s really intelligent. A really good coach. It’s going to be a really hard match.”
