Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has blamed his side’s loss to Tottenham Hotspur on being disconnected early in the second half and failing to be more clinical.

Spurs beat United 4-3 in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup to dump them out of the competition.

Goalkeepers Fraser Forster and Altay Bayandir made errors leading to four of the seven goals. Spurs had raced into a 3-0 lead inside an hour, but two Forster blunders in the space of three minutes gave United hope, as Joshua Zirkzee and Amad Diallo found the back of the net.

However, Son Heung-min scored directly from a corner kick before Jonny Evans reduced the deficit once again in the 94th minute of proceedings.

United had the lion’s share of possession and were mostly the dominant outfit but a combination of individual mistakes and lack of quality let them down at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

After the final whistle, Amorim spoke to Sky Sports and gave his verdict on the result and performance.

The Portuguese coach said, “We disconnected at the beginning of the second half, that was difficult. If you look at all of the game we were the best team but they were more clinical.”

“We lost but the fight from the lads was really important for me.”

When asked whether he feels United controlled the match, Amorim responded, “Yes you feel it in the stadium, we were comfortable, dominated possession. It was not the last pass but the last shot that was the problem.”

On what he has learned about his players, Amorim replied, “Tomorrow I think about tonight, tonight I don’t feel anything. There is nothing I can say to you about what is good.”

“Tomorrow I can say a lot of things. Tonight we lost and then we have to take a night to think and then tomorrow we will have a lot of good things from this game.”

“We cannot think in that way that winning silverware makes everything OK. It will be a long way, we are improving, our goal is to win the Premier League, how long it will take I don’t know.”

Marcus Rashford was on yet another occasion, excluded from the matchday squad. Amorim was questioned about whether it’s best for everyone that Rashford departs the club in January.

The United head coach remarked, “Tomorrow we have training, he will be there preparing for next game. He is a United player, everyone has a future at Man United.”

United return to Premier League action on Sunday when they host Bournemouth at Old Trafford.
