Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot is set to miss the Premier League clash against Southampton this Thursday night.
The Portuguese has once again been an ever-present in the United side this season.
He has already played 31 times in this campaign for the Red Devils, making two assists.
Dalot has struggled to live up to his fine performances of last season, when he won the Players’ Player of the Year award.
One of the contributing factors to Dalot’s drop in standards is that he has had to play in the unfamiliar role of left wing back in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system.
In the second half of the game against Arsenal yesterday he switched to a more familiar position on the right hand side but this hardly helped as he received two yellow cards in 16 minutes to get himself sent off.
The two cautions were as a result of two desperate lunges that he didn’t have to make.
While neither would go down as particularly dangerous tackles, it was a massive lapse in concentration that almost cost his side the win.
He will now serve a one-match suspension where he won’t be able to line up against bottom placed Southampton in the league on Thursday night.
Interestingly, Dalot was already suspended for the match as a result of the first yellow he picked up during the game, due to an accumulation of yellow cards.
Amorim now has a selection headache over who will replace the player and he will have to consider whether it is best to risk Tyrell Malacia or switch Noussair Mazraoui to the left and play Amad Diallo as a wingback.
In spite of his error, it has been reported thar Amoirm values Dalot and wants to keep him at the club moving forward.
The former Porto man has spoken about his desire to bring more leadership to the team but he will need to cut out moments of madness like yesterday’s if he is to make good on this promise.
