Amorim considers surprising position change for United’s most exciting attacker – report

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is reportedly considering a tactical shift that could see Amad Diallo deployed as a right wing-back upon his return from injury.

The Portuguese manager is reassessing his plans after the club missed out on Sporting CP star Geovany Quenda, who is set to join Chelsea in 2026.

Amad, currently sidelined with an ankle ligament injury, was initially expected to feature in an attacking midfield role under Amorim.

However, GiveMeSport claim that the 21-year-old is now being seriously considered for the right wing-back position, which would allow him to take on greater defensive responsibilities while still utilizing his attacking flair.

The Ivory Coast international, who has been at Old Trafford since his £19 million move from Atalanta in 2021, signed a new five-and-a-half-year contract in January, securing a wage increase to £120,000 per week.

His long-term commitment to the club indicates a willingness to adapt to different roles if it means earning a regular starting spot.

The Red Devils had prioritized signing Quenda, viewing him as an ideal addition due to his attacking intelligence and technical ability.

However, Chelsea secured a pre-agreement worth around £42 million, leaving United to explore alternative solutions internally rather than immediately dipping back into the transfer market.

Amorim remains keen on strengthening United’s options in the final third, but rather than targeting a direct replacement for Quenda, he may instead look to maximise Amad’s versatility.

Diogo Dalot is competing for the right wing-back position, so Amad may face a new challenge as he adapts to an unfamiliar role.

The Portuguese tactician has expressed optimism about the Ivorian’s recovery and expects him to be available for selection before the end of the season.

With Amorim focused on squad optimization, Amad’s future could hinge on how well he adapts to this unexpected tactical shift.
