Academy Briefing: Amorim watches U21s victory

Tuesday 17 December 2024 09:12

Head coach Ruben Amorim joined Nick Cox (Director of Academy), Jason Wilcox (technical director) and Darren Fletcher (first-team coach) on the touchline at Carrington this weekend to watch our Under-21s complete a 5-1 victory over Southampton.

Here’s all you need to know from our world-famous youth set-up in our regular Academy Briefing…

RUBEN WATCHES U21s VICTORY

Two goals from Jack Moorhouse and one each from Tyler Fletcher, Dan Gore and Ethan Wheatley led United to a convincing home victory on Saturday lunchtime.

“I think it’d be fair to assume the lads were deserving of the end scoreline,” reviewed assistant coach Dave Hughes.

“[It was] a really positive performance, though we’re always thinking of some areas to work further on. The challenge in the second half was to replicate the performance from the first, to be on the front foot and be exciting on the ball.

“[Ruben being here] reinforces the importance of the Academy and youth. Hopefully he’s walking away looking at some of the boys to involve them in training sessions. It’s really, really good to see senior staff watching the players play and hopefully they walk away with the same excitement as us.”

FA YOUTH CUP CHALLENGE APPROACHES

United host Coventry City in the FA Youth Cup third round at Leigh Sports Village on Wednesday evening (19:00 GMT). The match will be shown live on MUTV.

We are the competition’s most successful club, with 11 victories, the most recent of which came in 2022 when Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho starred in front of a 67,000-strong Old Trafford crowd. Fans are encouraged to go along to cheer the lads on. Tickets are priced £3 for adults and £1 for concessions.

FOURTH ROUND DRAW MADE

The winner of United v Coventry will face Preston North End in the FA Youth Cup fourth round. North End defeated Liverpool 4-1 in the third round.

MERCEDES-BENZ JUNIOR CUP 2025 DRAW MADE

United are one of eight top teams competing at the 33rd edition of the Mercedes-Benz Junior Cup in Sindelfingen in January. The Reds regularly appear at the tournament, as well as the Rewe Junior Cup, a little further north in Germany.

United have been drawn in Group B alongside Bayern Munich, Borussia Monchengladbach and Rangers. The matches will be streamed live on mercedes‑benz‑juniorcup.de.
