Darts sensation Luke Littler has questioned Thomas Tuchel’s bizarre handling of Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo at the World Cup, calling on the player to be afforded minutes. Puzzling treatment Mainoo enjoyed a superb latter half of the 2025/26 season, sparked by Ruben Amorim’s dismissal and the appointment of Michael Carrick as his replacement. One of Carrick’s first major decisions was to restore Mainoo to the team after he was constantly overlooked by Amorim. It’s a decision that paid dividends. Mainoo was crucial, helping United to finish in third place and secure Champions League football after a two-year absence. His impressive performances earned him a spot in the England World Cup squad. But Mainoo has yet to get a taste of the action in the tournament despite the nation’s struggles in midfield. The Three Lions have made steady progress at the World Cup, beating Croatia in their opening game before being held to a goalless draw by Ghana and then seeing off Panama to secure their place in the Round of 32. Mainoo starred for England in the Euros under Gareth Southgate. He started each of their last three games, including the heartbreaking loss in the final to Spain. Littler, a vocal United follower, is convinced that Mainoo’s existing experience on the grandest stages would make him a vital tool in Tuchel’s arsenal. Mainoo demand Littler said on The Rest is Football podcast, “I think even in the Euros a few months ago he proved himself there.” “I don’t get why he is not allowed to prove himself in the World Cup so far but hopefully he does get a chance.” Weighing in on Tuchel’s squad selection, Littler remarked, “I think [Harry] Maguire had to be in there.” Mainoo will be hoping to be involved later on Wednesday when England face DR Congo in the Round of 32. The meeting kicks off at 5 pm. If they overcome this test of resolve, England will then take on Mexico at the Estadio Azteca for a blockbuster last-16 tie.
