Resurgent Manchester United U18s cruise to another win after magical moment from JJ Gabriel

Manchester United Under-18s hosted Wolverhampton Wanderers Under-18s at Carrington on Saturday morning. Darren Fletcher’s side are in a rich vein of form, winning the U18 Manchester derby and advancing to the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup recently. First half United enjoyed most of the possession during the opening exchanges of the match but found it tough to find space in behind a resolute Wolverhampton Wanderers backline. It was shaping up to be a match that would require a bit of magic to open the scoring, and JJ Gabriel did just that in the 24th minute. Gabriel jinked inside one defender before spinning back outside to create space on the left of the box. He then smashed the ball off the underside of the crossbar from an outrageously tight angle. The goal opened up the match and United doubled their lead just two minutes later. After forcing a turnover high up the pitch, Jariyah Shah spread the ball to Noah Ajayi, who shifted it onto his left foot and placed the ball low into the far-right corner. Dan Armer then looked to get in on the action when he went forward for Jacob Watson’s free-kick delivery and saw his headed attempt hit the crossbar. The woodwork saw a lot of action on the day, with Gabriel hitting it again moments later after another high turnover. Second half Gabriel hit the back of the net early in the second half after intercepting the ball from the goalkeeper, but the referee adjudged it to be a handball and disallowed the goal. Shah then came close to adding to the score with a long-range effort from 25 yards that was tipped round the post. The second half continued as the first did, with the majority of the game being one-way traffic, but Wolverhampton Wanderers looked to fight back late on. Mason Stevens pulled one back for the visitors in the 80th minute with a smart finish, sending Fred Heath the wrong way in the United goal. Then Cameroon-born Bassirou Nkoto returned from a lengthy injury layoff for his Under-18s debut and made an instant impact off the bench, winning a penalty in the 90th minute. Gabriel stepped up and confidently struck into the top right corner as the match ended 3-1. United are back in action on Wednesday when they host Derby County in the league.
