REPORT: Man United Are ‘In The Running’ To Sign £26M ‘Bargain’ U20 World Cup Star

BACK David Tully Oct 30th 2025 Man United are “in the running” to sign River Plate winger Ian Subiabre, according to reports. The 18-year-old was part of Argentina’s squad that reached the Under-20 World Cup final earlier this month, and United In Focus claim that the Red Devils had scouts watching his progress. Subiabre scored in the opening 2 group games against Cuba and Australia, but he was mostly deployed as a substitute during the tournament. The forward came on for the last 30 minutes in the final but was not able to prevent Argentina from losing 2-0 to Morocco. Subiabre’s release clause is attracting attention The teenager’s contract at River Plate expires at the end of next year, and it includes a buyout clause worth €30m (£26m). United In Focus has described it as a “bargain”, considering Subiabre’s potential, but the Red Devils will not be the only team interested in securing his signature. Media sources in Argentina have heavily linked Manchester City and Chelsea with the player in recent months, and there are said to be plenty of other top European clubs keeping an eye on his situation. Man United could do with some cover for Mbeumo While Subiabre can be deployed as a centre-forward or on the left wing, his natural position is on the right-hand side, cutting in onto his stronger foot. If he were to make the switch to Old Trafford, the Argentinian youth international would be seen as a backup for Bryan Mbeumo. Amad Diallo is also an option, but with the Ivorian having dual responsibilities as a wingback, it wouldn’t be a bad thing to have more depth in that area of the pitch. We shall have to wait and see whether United step up their interest in Subiabre in the New Year.
