“I was expecting a lot”: player of the month Bryan Mbeumo opens up on his start to life at Old Trafford

Bryan Mbeumo is a lethal weapon on the football pitch, but off it, the new Manchester United No. 19 comes across as a quiet man.

The Cameroonian forward was outstanding for Brentford last season, finishing the campaign with 20 goals and nine assists from 42 games in all competitions.

His efforts earned him a dream move to Old Trafford over the summer. Ruben Amorim roped him in to revolutionize a faltering attack that had managed just 44 goals in 38 games in the league last season.

Mbeumo was outstanding against Arsenal, and decent against Fulham, before coming off the bench to score his first goal for United against Grimsby Town.

Unfortunately, the 26-year-old also missed his second penalty in the EFL Cup second round tie, and the Red Devils were subsequently knocked out of the tournament.

However, Mbeumo bounced back by scoring in the 3-2 win against Burnley just ahead of the international break.

Mbeumo delighted to arrive at the Theatre of Dreams

During his joining interview with United, Mbeumo had professed his love for chess and piano. The player recently sat down with the club’s media team for a round of the Royal Game, where he opened up on his start to life at Old Trafford.

“It’s been tough. I was expecting a lot from here because it’s a big club. It’s a big everything. I’m really happy with what happened to me here, the teammates, the staff, everyone in Carrington are lovely people,” said Mbeumo.

“You really want to come in and work here every day, which is really good. When I first arrive somewhere, I don’t really know, I don’t like to be loud or show myself a lot [be outgoing].”

Mbeumo won the United Player of the Month Award for August, and his goal against Burnley was also voted as the goal of the month.

Similarities between Amorim and Thomas Frank

Mbeumo found great success under Thomas Frank at the Gtech Community Stadium, registering 70 goals and 51 assists from 242 games.

The Cameroonian went on to outline the similarities between the approaches of the Danish manager and Amorim.

“I think I’ve found some similarities because he always tries to do it in a fun way, and I think this is really important because it makes your life more enjoyable,” said Mbeumo.

Frank took over at Tottenham Hotspur this summer, and reportedly wanted Mbeumo to join him in north London. However, the player had his heart set on joining United.
