Manchester United are serious about strengthening the midfield in the summer transfer window and the primary target is Carlos Baleba.
However, reports indicate that the if the Brighton play breaker does not arrive, then Man Utd will push to sign Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP.
News – Close – £30m player rejects Man United to sign for Liverpool
According to an exclusive story covered by The Sun, the Red Devils are preparing an offer worth £50million to sign the Danish international if they fail to lure Baleba.
The news outlet have mentioned that the midfield enforcer has a £68m clause but the Lions would be willing to accept £58m if necessary bonuses are met.
However, the stories coming from Portugal have a different view point.
As per today’s edition of O Jogo, Hjulmand has a contract until June 2028 but the release clause, which was worth 80 million euros, was only valid until June 15th this year.
The media outlet have mentioned that club president, Frederico Varandas, has closed the door on the departure of Sporting’s starting players, unless the interested parties meet the clauses.
However, in case of Hjulmand, now that the release clause has expired, ‘Sporting can ask for whatever amount they want’ for their skipper.
Former United manager, Erik ten Hag, signed majority of the players that he had managed earlier in his career, but things did not work out for him. Should Amorim go down that road as well?
The Portuguese boss, was one of the main drivers behind Hjulmand’s transfer to Sporting in 2023. Moreover, Amorim was the one to hand him the captain’s arm-band.
The 26-year-old has proved to be a rock solid defensive midfielder in the Liga Nos and is a key member of the senior international side.
In Baleba, Man Utd will get a proven Premier League player but he is going to cost more than Hjulmand at over £100m.
Have your say – Who should Amorim bring in to improve things in the center of the park?
