Club boss lays down sky-high challenge for “highly-talented” United loanee after stunning loan debut

Bristol City head coach Gerhard Struber has set a sky-high challenge for Manchester United goalkeeper Radek Vitek after his impressive loan debut.

Vitek enjoys superb Bristol debut

Vitek produced a top-class performance for Bristol as they cruised to a comfortable opening day victory over Sheffield United.

He joined the Championship outfit last month in search of regular first-team minutes. The highly-rated shot-stopper spent last season with Austrian Bundesliga club FC Blau-Weiss Linz, helping them to their highest-ever league position.

Vitek also had a loan spell with Accrington Stanley in 2024.

He started in goal for Bristol as they beat the Blades 4-1, courtesy of a Scott Twine brace and strikes from Ross McCrorie and Anis Mehmeti. Sheffield United’s only goal was scored by Tyrese Campbell.

Vitek made five saves, three of which came from inside the box. He contributed two high claims and as many sweeper actions.

He stopped 1.42 expected goals, earning Bristol’s ‘Pick of the Match’ award, which is a fan-voted honour.

Struber spoke to Bristol Live and waxed lyrical about Vitek, but issued a demanding challenge to the player as he looks to embark on a run of form at Ashton Gate.

Struber remarks on Vitek

Struber said, “He did a really good job. We can see his profile; he’s a highly talented player with a high potential profile.”

“Of course, this is something special that he brings on the table, but it’s also important that we find the right consistency. He’s a young player; today he showed us a great performance, but now it’s the start.”

“And this counts for every single player, consistency is, in the end, the driver for more. In this direction, I think we have to train in a very good level, we have to grow with all the things, and the standard will go higher and higher.”

Struber added, “Games like this show us that we are, in more directions, ready, but of course, we have to learn and we have to grow and bring the standard to the highest level that we can bring with this group of players.”

Vitek and Bristol are back in action on Tuesday, when they welcome MK Dons for the first round of the EFL Cup. The game kicks off at 19:45 BST.
