United “in pole position” to sign prolific striker but Ten Hag could ruin their plans with late swoop – report

Manchester United are in the driving seat to sign Christian Kofane from Albacete Balompié, as per reports.

On Friday, Chido Obi came to United’s rescue in their post-season outing against Hong Kong, scoring a second-half brace to seal a rare win for Ruben Amorim’s side.

While United’s big-money signing Rasmus Hojlund has endured a torrid campaign, Chido Obi has shown signs of promise in his limited minutes.

The 17-year-old arrived at United from Arsenal’s academy following the expiration of his contract in North London. It seems United are pushing to sign another young striker in a bargain deal.

Earlier this month, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming United are interested in Kofane, having made contact to sign him this summer.

Now, Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness) claim United are among the clubs “in pole position” to sign the 18-year-old centre-forward.

The Cameroonian prospects’ “explosion” in the Segunda División has sparked the interest of several clubs, including Atletico Madrid and United.

Kofane moved to Albacete in November of last year and instantly established himself as a first-team regular. He has scored eight goals and registered an assist in 19 La Liga 2 appearances.

Despite interest from Spanish clubs, the report suggests Kofane’s future lies away from Spain.

Apart from United, AS Monaco and Erik ten Hag’s Bayer Leverkusen have also shown concrete interest in signing the Cameroon U20 international.

Further, it is understood that Albacete hope to have Kofane back on loan next season if he leaves this summer in a permanent transfer. Another campaign in Spain’s second tier may greatly aid his development.

As far as United’s first-team plans are concerned, it is fair to assume INEOS want to sign a more experienced goalscorer. However, the pursuit has been derailed as their priority target Liam Delap has agreed to move to Chelsea.
