United in “advanced talks” over move that will secure them a major financial windfall – report

Manchester United are reportedly set to net £7.9m from taking part in the Premier League’s Summer Series event in the United States at the end of July.

A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United are set to headline the pre-season tournament.

United were not involved in the inaugural Summer Series on the US East Coast in 2023, preferring to make their own arrangements for pre-season instead.

It was stated that the Premier League’s acquisition of United is regarded as a major coup, considering the commercial appeal of the Red Devils and their popularity in the US.

Now, The Athletic reveal that United, Bournemouth, West Ham United and Everton are in “advanced talks” to participate in the Summer Series.

Games for the second edition of the competition are expected to take place in Atlanta, New Jersey and Chicago. The line-up has not been completely finalised because of a need to ensure all clubs maintain their Premier League status at the end of the ongoing season.

Ruben Amorim’s men are currently in 15th position and 12 points above the drop zone.

Adam Crafton and Dan Sheldon add, “Manchester United’s anticipated involvement in the Summer Series is in addition to their post-season trip to Malaysia and Hong Kong, which they hope will earn them $10million (£7.9m) in revenue at a time when further redundancies are expected to be made to their workforce.”

“The Old Trafford side may also play a game separate from the series on the west coast at the Snapdragon stadium in San Diego, as they have done the previous two years when visiting the U.S. on tour. The club’s front-of-shirt sponsor is Snapdragon, part of the Qualcomm group, but to travel to both coasts after a post-season tour would be particularly gruelling for the first team.”

It’s understood that the Premier League were keen on signing up another top club alongside United but these efforts failed, as Liverpool and Arsenal were not interested. Liverpool and Arsenal have opted to travel to Asia for pre-season.

Chelsea won the 2023 edition of the Summer Series. The Blues finished ahead of Aston Villa in second and Newcastle in third.

For United, the £7.9m windfall is a much-needed boost, during a time in which the club is struggling financially amidst the pressures brought about by PSR.

Meanwhile, the 20-time English champions are back in action on Saturday when they go away to Goodison Park to face David Moyes’ Everton.
