Manchester United’s concerning form under new head coach Ruben Amorim continued this weekend as Brighton dismantled another nervy home performance at Old Trafford.
The 3-1 reverse was Brighton’s third win in a row at the Theatre of Dreams and left Amorim with much to ponder once more.
Having watched his side be second best for the majority of the 90 minutes, Amorim did not hold back in his assessment of where he believes United are currently at.
The former Sporting boss said “we are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United” after the game, in a statement which would have sent shockwaves through the dressing room.
As reported by the Metro, Liverpool legend – now pundit – Steve Nicol slammed Amorim for his outburst and feels the Portuguese coach should have held back in his reaction.
Speaking on ESPN, Nichol was shocked with the statement and feels it could have a negative impact on Amorim’s fragile players.
“You can’t say that. I’m shaking my head. You can’t say that. For him to come out and say that, you just can’t do it.
“I don’t know what he thinks the reaction from the players is going to be after that. You just can’t say it,” said Nicol.
The European Cup winner added “sometimes you just need to lie” when dealing with the media, or risk damaging morale even further.
United are clearly underperforming in all metrics since the arrival of the 39-year-old with the new system looking too much for majority of the squad to deal with.
The team have looked particularly uncomfortable at Old Trafford and have lost four of their last five games in front of home support.
Signs of life seemed to be appearing after solid showings at Anfield and the Emirates Stadium against Liverpool and Arsenal, respectively, but United now seem to be back to square one after two sub-par home performances.
Amorim doesn’t have to wait long to see how his players react to him damming assessment of their form, with Rangers travelling to Manchester in a crunch Europa League clash on Thursday.
