Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee has revealed what about teammate Patrick Dorgu completely caught him off guard. Momentum halted Ruben Amorim’s dismissal saw Dorgu’s form pick up significantly, with the player embarking on a brilliant run, initially under Darren Fletcher and then current caretaker boss Michael Carrick. During Amorim’s tenure, Dorgu was primarily used in a wing-back role, where he struggled to have an impact on games. Fletcher trialled him in a left-wing role, and the results were immediate. He was particularly superb against Burnley. Carrick kept faith with Dorgu, who repaid that trust by playing a pivotal role in the victories over Manchester City and Arsenal, scoring in both matches. Unfortunately for Dorgu, he sustained a hamstring injury in the Arsenal game. A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that he will be sidelined for up to 10 weeks. Recent updates indicate his recovery is on track and intensifying, with the player now stepping up his workload as he targets a sensational comeback. Zirkzee spoke to club media alongside Bryan Mbeumo and revealed that the ease with which Dorgu transitioned into a new role completely took him by surprise. Zirkzee makes Dorgu admission The Dutchman said, “Before his injury… You know he’s good, but the way he popped off playing in a different role than he’d ever before…” “I think, not quite a surprise because everyone here knows they’re really good, you know what I mean?” “But it’s still like, wow, this kid is good…” Separately, Zirkzee also spoke about his kit number. He currently holds the number 11 but revealed he would prefer Luke Shaw’s 23 shirt. Asked which is favourite kit number, Zirkzee answered, “Yeah, but Luke has it.” On whether basketball icon Michael Jordan had any influence on his choice, Zirkzee remarked, “I think, I’m pretty sure there is.” “I just wore it when I was at Anderlect, and that kind of stuck with me. But ever since, there’s never been a team that had No. 23 [available].” United are next in action on Sunday when they host Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.
