“Worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United”: Amorim’s post-match words send shock waves across the football world

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has made an alarming admission, insisting the current team may be the worst in the history of the club, following Sunday’s 3-1 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Brighton needed only four minutes to break the deadlock as Carlos Baleba’s long ball over the top sent Kaoru Mitoma through on goal before the winger unselfishly squared for Yankuba Minteh to tap into an open goal.

Bruno Fernandes equalised for United from the spot-kick after Baleba ended up dragging Joshua Zirkzee down to the ground from inside the box.

Mitoma restored the visitors’ advantage after firing in from the back post, before a huge mistake from goalkeeper Andre Onana gifted Georginio Rutter a third in an eventful 3-1 win for the Seagulls.

After the match, Amorim spoke to MUTV and labelled his side’s performance in front of the home crowd as “not acceptable.”

In his press conference, Amorim went a step further, labelling the current United team as probably the worst in the club’s 147-year history.

The Portuguese coach told reporters, “In ten games in the Premier League, we won two. I know that. Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me. We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that.”

“I am not going to change, no matter what. I know we can succeed but we need to survive this moment. I am not naive. We need to survive now.”

“We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United. I know you want headlines but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that. Here you go: your headlines.”

“It’s hard to explain. We have to acknowledge the moment and not going around the problem. Everybody here is underperforming, no matter what the circumstances. We are underperforming and have to accept that.”

He added, “It’s unacceptable to lose so many games for any Premier League club, imagine Manchester United. So it’s a really hard moment but we have to continue, we have to continue, there is no other way. We need to suffer and continue. Our players are really nervous and anxious. When you go inside the last pitch you remember the last games here, if I feel it the players feel it a lot. The only way is to continue to do the same and to win games.”

Amorim expressed discontent with how his players changed positions during the loss to Brighton.

“I knew that was going to be hard to put a completely new idea in the moment. But when you lose games and don’t win three games in a row it becomes really hard.”

“So that’s why I’m telling we are going to suffer because I will continue to do the same. To help my players is to give them the tools to play in this way. But then without training is really hard, then without training and losing games [it’s harder].”

“You can feel it in the end of the game. Everybody was changing position and that is something I will not see again. We can lose but we have to maintain position.”

On fielding two strikers, Amorim pointed out, “If I want to show to the media or to the fans, I put two strikers. But I didn’t put two strikers because if I do it’s going to be more difficult for them to understand the way we play.”

“I am just here to help my players but we need to understand we are breaking all the bad records. It’s a proud thing we need to change.”

United are back in action on Thursday when they face Rangers in the Europa League.
