“When I heard…”: Benjamin Sesko reveals why he turned down other suitors to sign for United

Manchester United secured the services of Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig this summer in a bid to solve their striker problems. The Slovenian is highly rated across Europe and was also wanted by Newcastle United. Meanwhile, Arsenal were heavily linked with the player in 2024, although a move failed to materialise last summer. He was reportedly on the Gunners’ agenda this year as well. The Red Devils, however, managed to win the race this summer, reportedly paying €76.5 million up front for the 22 year old, with a further €8.5 million in add-ons and bonuses. Sesko has now revealed that he moved to Old Trafford to fulfil a lifelong dream. Always wanted to play at Old Trafford Speaking to Sky Sports, Sesko said that he was over the moon when he heard that United wanted him this summer. “It’s not just mine, but probably for loads of football players, it’s just a dream. Something that you want to achieve in your career, especially to play for a club like that,” said Sesko. “When I heard that I can move here and there are big possibilities that I can change clubs, especially to United, I was burning. It’s something that I always wanted to have. It happened and I’m really happy.” Interviewer Adam Smith asked Sesko whether there were no other clubs on his mind when the Red Devils came calling and the Slovenian responded: “Yeah. For me, this was a dream to play for a club like this and a stadium like this. It’s something that I always wanted.” Sesko has registered two goals in nine appearances in all competitions for the Premier League giants, five of which were starts. Not a regular starter yet While Sesko is not yet a guaranteed starter for United, there’s no denying that they have a generational talent on their hands. The Slovenian scored 21 goals and set up six more from 45 games in all competitions for RB Leipzig last season. It is only to be expected that a young player entering a new league will take time to settle. However, Sesko has already shown glimpses of talent that could sort out United’s No. 9 position for the next decade. The youngster scored two goals in his last two starts for the Premier League giants before dropping to the bench against Liverpool. The Slovenian could return to the starting XI as United face Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday, 25 October. Sesko’s arrival at the Theatre of Dreams also saw Rasmus Hojlund leave on a season-long loan to Napoli. The Serie A champions have an obligation to sign the Dane permanently for £38 million, and Fabrizio Romano recently stated that the clause could be triggered this month.
