Tomorrow, Andre Onana will undergo his medical with Trabzonspor before putting pen to paper on a season-long deal.
The Manchester United goalkeeper has now found himself cast out of Ruben Amorim’s plans for the campaign ahead, with his dismal display away to Grimsby Town last month being deemed the ‘final straw’ for the key decision-makers, as per Mail Sport.
Onana conceded twice at Blundell Park, overseeing a torrid display in regular time before watching the League Two hosts convert 12 penalties past him, ending United’s Carabao Cup run in the second round.

Such a despondent showing prompted Amorim to push for a new shot-stopper in the final days of the window. On deadline day, the club confirmed the signing of 23-year-old Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.
The Grimsby defeat was just the latest fiasco in Onana’s turbulent United career. Earlier in the summer when players reported back to Carrington for pre-season training, the Cameroonian sustained a hamstring injury on just his second day back at the complex.
Amorim was said to be ‘unhappy’ at the situation, as video footage released from Onana’s trip back to Cameroon showed him playing ‘outfield on a muddy makeshift pitch’.
Still, he was heading into 2025/2026 with full belief that he would still be the first-choice between the sticks at Old Trafford – hence his ‘worry’ when he was omitted from the opening Premier League fixtures of the term against Arsenal and Fulham.
INEOS backed Amorim’s plea to offload Onana
After the League Cup debacle, the board advised Onana to consider alternative options, though these would be limited due to the European transfer window closing on September 1.
Turkish outfits, as well as those in Saudi Arabia, are able to do business until September 12 and September 10, respectively – hence his swift agreement with Trabzonspor.
Amorim’s decision to push for the £47 million signing’s departure was ratified by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Jason Wilcox, although they will be tasked with selling him next year, as there is no buy option or obligation included in the terms.
