While most will point to Manchester United’s midfield as the area in most urgent need of reinforcements, an argument can also be made for the left wing needing further quality. Ruben Amorim has consistently picked Diogo Dalot to start on the left despite the right wingback position being a more natural fit for him. The Portugal international has started 12 out of 17 games in all competitions, with the head coach even calling out his tendency to cut inside instead of taking his man on. The 26-year-old is a fullback, converted to a wingback in Amorim’s formation, and such issues were always expected. Left wingback solution needed Amad was converted to a right wingback, a position he has made his own. The Red Devils subsequently splurged an initial £25.2 million to sign Patrick Dorgu from Lecce. The idea was the Dane’s natural attacking instincts would allow him to shine on the left, like Amad on the right. However, the Denmark international has struggled for consistency, blowing hot and cold in games, with Amorim lamenting his anxiousness on the ball. The fact that United did not address the issue last summer by bringing in a more experienced wingback has meant the 21-year-old has been forced to face the heat a lot more. Patrick Dorgu has struggled As per The Sun, sources within the club feel Patrick Dorgu is a squad player at best, but due to lack of resources, he has been thrown into the deep end at Old Trafford by Amorim. His debut campaign was a difficult one to digest, and those lingering memories have not exactly allowed the United No.13 to shine under the bright lights at the Theatre of Dreams. “Well-placed sources believe United have overexposed Dorgu as he should have been recruited as a squad player. “Another United source suggested Dorgu had been “ruined” by a chastening first-year experience at Old Trafford.” Semenyo as readymade replacement Other options in that position include Diego Leon, who has been earmarked for a loan exit in January, while Harry Amass is unlikely to return to Old Trafford and could seal another temporary exit. Which is why the Red Devils are targeting Antoine Semenyo for the role. He is versatile and has bags of attacking talent. Whether INEOS can close the deal in the winter will be interesting to see.
