Manchester United were once again held to a disappointing draw for the second third successive game. While they’re unbeaten in four Premier League matches, the Red Devils have now dropped points to Wolverhampton Wanderers, Leeds United and Burnley, all of whom sit 16th or below in the table, in their last three outings.Last Sunday’s result (1-1) at Elland Road spelt the end of Ruben Amorim’s 14-month tenure, meaning Darren Fletcher occupied the hot seat in the dugout for tonight’s contest.Fletcher granted substantial fitness boost pre-Clarets clash(Photo by Carl Recine/Getty Images)His attack-minded team selection pleased fans, albeit he was boosted hugely by the return of Bruno Fernandes in the starting XI.The Portuguese skipper picked up where he left off in terms of being United’s most influential creator and assisted Benjamin Sesko for the side’s 50th-minute leveller. Not only that, but Fernandes won 100 per cent of his duels attempted, recorded an 88 per cent passing accuracy and made eight crosses. He also fired seven passes into the final third, created five chances and did his bit at the back with three defensive contributions.Alas, it came as no surprise that United’s performance levels dropped when their midfield maestro departed the field in the 61st minute.Fernandes’ departure killed United’s momentum(Photo by Carl Recine/Getty Images)Burnley’s equaliser to make it 2-2 came just five minutes after Fernandes’ withdrawal, and United were then unable to conjure up a response to restore their lead. Eventually, they had no choice but to settle for a point, leaving them seventh-placed in the table.Journalists have since deemed Fletcher’s decision to substitute Fernandes a ‘well-intentioned’ but ultimately ‘costly’ one. As well-intentioned as the Fernandes sub was, he had to be kept on. His influence on the team is so profound that maybe #mufc wouldn’t have slackened off as they have done. A goal from Burnley out of nothing. — Samuel Luckhurst (@samuelluckhurst) January 7, 2026 Such a frustrating night for #MUFC. Should have been a comfortable victory. Burnley with one shot on target + scoring twice. Fernandes removal, due to managed minutes, affected United’s momentum. Fletcher tried to win game with subs. Lacey sweet strikes. — Laurie Whitwell (@lauriewhitwell) January 7, 2026The interim manager had already confirmed in the build-up to the game that both Fernandes’ and Mason Mount’s minutes would have to be managed carefully, given it was their first game back from injury, so his hands were essentially tied when it came to the tactical tweak.
