Manchester United are already laying down plans for squad reinforcements in 2026, and a new midfielder is clearly their priority. The Red Devils are upgrading their first-team squad step by step. Having focused on the defence in the summer of 2024 and the attack this summer, the middle of the park is next up on INEOS’ agenda. Bruno Fernandes has been quite impressive in the pivot role this season, but his partner Casemiro is out of contract next summer. Both players are on the wrong side of 30, the club have to lay down succession plans soon. Recent reports have suggested that the Premier League giants are monitoring several candidates for the job, including Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton. One of the Premier League’s finest orchestrators Wharton rose through the ranks at Blackburn Rovers before joining Crystal Palace at the start of 2024. The Englishman has been a revelation at Selhurst Park since the move, and helped Oliver Glasner’s team win the FA Cup last campaign. This season, Wharton has registered 19 appearances in all competitions for the Eagles, all but three of which were starts. The 21 year old’s football intelligence, ability to dictate the tempo of the game, and outstanding passing ability make him a stellar option for United. Ruben Amorim’s side have struggled to control games this season, and Wharton’s presence could help them unlock even the most resolute of defences. The Red Devils are reportedly confident of securing the Englishman’s signature for around £70 million in 2026. The player’s agent, James Featherstone, has now provided an update on his plans for the future. Wharton ready for the next step in his career Speaking to talkSPORT, Featherstone said: “When he was at Blackburn we sat down and spoke about shooting for the stars and playing for England. So how do you get there?” “Personally I think to play for England you have to play Champions League, to play in the Champions League you have got to play for one of the top teams in one of the top leagues. That jump to a Champions League team, I think you can get lost. The plan below that was to play for a Premier League team.” “We have got a plan. He is 21. I have to check myself to remember that every now and then. It doesn’t have to be achieved yesterday, today or this moment.” “He has got his in-game, in-season targets and goals. He has got to do his bit and the rest will look after itself in a very structured, calm way to ultimately add value and maximise his ability.” Wharton is under contract until 2029, so United still have to convince Crystal Palace to let him go. Final Thoughts While Featherstone’s words will be a massive boost to United’s plans, it is looks like Amorim’s side may have to secure a top-four finish this season to convince Wharton’s camp to choose them ahead of his other suitors. Meanwhile, securing a move in January may not be easy either, especially since the Red Devils do not have European football to offer this season. As such, the Premier League giants’ squad reinforcement plans for 2026 could depend heavily on how they perform this season. ✅ “We have got a plan…” 🤷♂️ “It doesn’t have to be achieved this minute!” James Featherstone, agent of #CPFC’s Adam Wharton, discusses the future of the midfielder amid #MUFC interest! 👀 pic.twitter.com/VWAthbfBhj — talkSPORT (@talkSPORT) December 5, 2025 Featured image Matt McNulty via Getty Images The Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade.
