Manchester United Women’s dream Champions League campaign continued against Paris Saint-Germain at Old Trafford. First half The Red Devils were fortunate not to go behind when Jennifer Echegini spun and fired an effort from distance that clipped the outside of the post. Many teams would have been shocked by such a start from illustrious opponents like PSG but not this United side. Jayde Riviere threaded a lovely pass down the right hand side where Melvine Malard beat her marker for pace. She then snuck inside and unleashed an unstoppable left footed drive to give United the lead in front of the Stretford End. Former United keeper, Mary Earps, could do little but just watch the ball glide into the net. Nonetheless, nobody said the Champions League would be easy and the Parisians showed their class just before half-time. Olga Carmona unleashed a beautiful curling effort from distance that landed in the top corner of the goal to pull her side level. Safia Middleton-Patel, who was deputising for the injured Phallon Tullis-Joyce could do very little to stop the fine strike. Second half United could have gone back into their shells but once again they responded with courage. Roared on by the crowd, two of United’s summer signings combined with quality. Jess Park glided through the midfield with technical brilliance and she rolled the ball over to the much-improved Anna Sandberg. The Swede put a delightful ball into the box and found her compatriot Fridolina Rolfö who headed home to restore United’s lead. Rolfo was signed up for exactly these type of big European moments and it is safe to say that she is so far delivering. The Red Devils really had their tails up now and the unplayable Malard marauded down the right hand side and unleashed a strong effort that was well tipped away by Earps. United held on for a valuable three points and they now sit third in the Champions League table behind European powerhouses FC Barcelona and Lyon only on goal difference. Marc Skinner’s side will face another massive week as they face Manchester City on Saturday afternoon and they will then come up against German giants Wolfsburg next Wednesday.
