Video: United Women overpower fierce rivals Liverpool 3-1 to soar to second place

Manchester United Women came out on top against old rivals Liverpool to rise to second in the Women’s Super League. First half The Red Devils started the game well and Elisabeth Terland had two efforts well stopped by the Liverpool goalkeeper. Terland had her third chance of the half when good pressing from Lisa Naalsund presented her compatriot with the ball, but her effort was deflected wide of the goal. Melvine Malard then had a chance when she thrashed a ball across goal, but it was well saved by the Liverpool goalkeeper. Jess Park was next to try her luck, but her curled effort just drifted wide. The first half ended nil-nil and both sides had work to do. Second half Park almost opened the scoring right after half-time, but Jennifer Falk made a great stop. Naalsund impressed last week at Aston Villa and was given the start. She repaid manager Marc Skinner and more with a wonderfully worked opener. Malard played a ball into the space in front of Park, who cut the ball back to an unmarked Naalsund in the middle of the box, who confidently slipped the ball into the net. 1-0 United. The Red Devils could not hold onto their lead for long, though, as Alice Bergstrom poked in after a mad goal-line scramble following a corner. In a crazy few minutes, Naalsund grabbed her second and restored the home side’s lead against their arch-rivals. Brilliant pressing from Julia Olme resulted in her winning the ball high and playing in the Norwegian. Naalsund took care of the rest with a smart shot across goal to wrong-foot Falk. United and Liverpool both searched for another goal, but it was the home side who would be happiest. The Red Devils’ third goal was certainly made in Sweden, with Ellen Wangerheim feeding Hanna Lundkvist on an underlapping run. The cross was then met by Rolfo in the six-yard box after getting in front of her marker. Another huge goal for the summer signing. The full-time whistle blew and United celebrated with the home crowd after their second victory of the season over Liverpool.
