Concerns over the fitness of Manchester United defender Noussair Mazraoui are mounting after he was seen leaving St James’ Park limping on Wednesday evening. United defeated United’s seven-game unbeaten streak under Michael Carrick came to an end as the club suffered a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle. Anthony Gordon gave the Magpies the lead in first-half stoppage time from the penalty spot, having won the spot-kick himself. But United didn’t stay behind for too long, drawing level just moments before the break through Casemiro. The Brazilian met a brilliant delivery from Bruno Fernandes to head home. United were handed a golden opportunity to go on and take control of proceedings when Jacob Ramsey was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence. However, the Red Devils failed to make their numerical advantage count, producing a tepid and uninspired display that ultimately failed to trouble Newcastle. Newcastle made the visitors pay in the 90th-minute through substitute William Osula, who got the beating of Tyrell Malacia to cut in and curl the ball into the back of the net, past a helpless Senne Lammens. United remain in third place in the Premier League table but failed to grab the chance to put some distance between themselves and their top-four rivals. After the final whistle, Michael Carrick could not hide his disappointment with the performance and result. Lammens echoed the manager’s sentiments. Carrick could be set for further frustration after a video emerged of Mazraoui limping out of St James’ Park. Mazraoui injury fears Mazraoui was named in the starting XI in place of Diogo Dalot, who dropped to the bench. He was solid defensively and reliable on the ball before he was taken off and replaced by Malacia. Malacia was partly at fault for Osula’s late goal. The Sun’s Katherine Walsh published a video of Mazraoui moving in visible discomfort while exiting St James’ Park. Fans will certainly be waiting with bated breath to find out the extent of the issue. Hopefully, it’s nothing serious and the Moroccan returns by the time United play their next game on March 15, against Aston Villa.
