Video: “I didn’t know…”: United hero shares hilarious reaction after scoring stunner vs Newcastle

Despite missing multiple key personnel, Manchester United overcame Newcastle 1-0 on Boxing Day at Old Trafford. The Magpies had won five out of the last six encounters between the two sides, and with the hosts missing Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, Amad, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matthijs de Ligt, just to name a few, it was expected to be an uphill battle for the Red Devils. That did not prove to be the case, as the visitors hardly threatened and the home side picked up their second clean sheet of the campaign. Ruben Amorim sprang multiple surprises on the night, and they caught out the away side. The head coach also had to rely on stars he had criticised recently, and they proved their doubters wrong in stunning fashion. Patrick Dorgu given the license to go and attack Manuel Ugarte, who started in the middle of the park, buzzed around the Newcastle players and hardly allowed them time on the ball. And the winning goal came from the unlikeliest of sources. Patrick Dorgu was criticised by the head coach for his anxiousness when on the ball. But on Friday, the Dane was given the license to bomb forward at will as he was played as a right-winger instead of a wingback. That meant he did not have as much defensive responsibility, and that seemed to free his mind and as a result, the ex-Lecce ace expressed him more freely. Amorim explained as much after the game. “He played in a different position today and played where he can make more mistakes and it is not so dangerous for the team and he can take more risks and that helped Patrick play well.” And the matchwinner told Sky Sports that he was delighted with his first goal in United colours and that he took on board his head coach’s advice. I didn’t know I could do that, but I was very happy to score my first goal in this stadium as well. It was amazing. “I just took what he [Ruben Amorim] told me to work on my confidence and stuff and I think I did well today. I just looked at the ball, saw it drop, and I just hit it. “I’ve been practicing in training, so I think that’s what helped me.” Patrick Dorgu is likely to see more gametime in this new attacking position. Amorim will be hoping he can continue to deliver in the same way in the weeks to come.
