Manchester United will be competing on three fronts across January as we welcome in the new year.
Closing the chapter on a difficult December for the Reds, the opening month of 2025 offers plenty of opportunities to return to winning ways for Ruben Amorim’s side.
Along with our Premier League outings, we’ll also have the chance to progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup, and towards the end of the month we’ll learn our European fate following the conclusion of the Europa League league phase.

Liverpool v United (Premier League)
Date: Sunday 5 January
Kick-off time: 16:30 GMT
There’s to be no easy start to the year for Amorim’s side, as first up we face an away trip to face our rivals from Merseyside, Liverpool, in the Premier League.
The league leaders are enjoying a strong season so far under Arne Slot, but we proved to be tough customers at Anfield last time out, holding them to a scoreless draw just over 12 months ago, in our final meeting with Jurgen Klopp at the venue.
It’s also sandwiched between the first weeks without a midweek game for the Reds since the arrival of Amorim in November, which will provide plenty of vital opportunities for the Portuguese head coach to spend some time with his players on the Carrington training pitch.
Arsenal v United (FA Cup)
Date: Sunday 12 January
Kick-off time: 15:00 GMT
Another tricky away clash awaits us after those seven days, this time heading southbound to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal in our first Emirates FA Cup meeting this season.
We’ve faced the Gunners just once at their current stadium in this competition before, a 2019 fixture we emerged with a 3-1 victory from, courtesy of goals from Alexis Sanchez, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial.
The Reds will hope to recreate that magic almost six years on in this Sunday afternoon clash, to make a successful start to our defence of the trophy that we won in London last term.
United v Southampton (Premier League)
Date: Thursday 16 January
Kick-off time: 20:00 GMT
Our third January meeting sees Southampton visit Old Trafford for a Thursday evening Premier League clash.
The Saints have struggled so far in this campaign since their promotion from the Championship at the end of last season and find themselves at the base of the league, but now under new stewardship after the recent appointment of former Roma boss Ivan Juric as their new manager.
You have to go back to 2016 for the last time the south-coast outfit beat the Reds in M16. That, along with our famous 9-0 win over the side in recent memory, can provide a source of confidence heading into the game.
United v Brighton & Hove Albion (Premier League)
Date: Sunday 19 January
Kick-off time: 14:00 GMT
A tight turnaround after the Saints clash sees Brighton & Hove Albion arrive just days later for another Premier League meeting but, thankfully, the fact that both are to be held at Old Trafford will reduce what would otherwise have been some intense travel arrangements.
At 39, it’s rare that Amorim will face a manager younger than himself in England’s top tier, but that’s exactly what the Seagulls present with 31-year-old Fabian Hurzeler in the hot seat.
With Brighton only a few points ahead of the Reds in the table, it could prove to be an important chance to gain on those teams above us.
United v Rangers (Europa League)
Date: Thursday 23 January
Kick-off time: 20:00 GMT
United are going well in the Europa League so far, in the first iteration of the competition’s new-look league phase, which pits all 36 teams against each other in one table to decide who advances to the knockout stages.
The top eight advance through automatically, meaning the Reds’ current seventh-place berth looks promising, but a crucial clash awaits against Scottish side Rangers, who sit just one place, and one point, below us.
We’ve faced the Gers just four times in our history, winning three and drawing once, so Amorim will want to throw everything behind maintaining that unbeaten record, hopefully avoiding the need for play-off games in the process.
Fulham v United (Premier League)
Date: Sunday 26 January
Kick-off time: 19:00 GMT
Fresh from three home games on the trot, concluding with that Europa meeting with Rangers, the Reds will hit the road down to London once more, this time heading to the west of the city to face Fulham at Craven Cottage.
United will be looking to complete the double over the Cottagers this season, adding to the 1-0 win we claimed in the reverse fixture in August which saw Joshua Zirkzee net the first goal of his Reds career in his debut appearance.
Marco Silva somewhat surprisingly has his charges pushing for a European spot as we head into the new year, so United will arrive knowing the opposition won’t make it an easy ride to the desired three points.

FCSB v United (Europa League)
Date: Thursday 30 January
Kick-off time: 20:00 GMT
Our final January game comes in the form of a trip to Romania to face FCSB at the Arena Nationala, also representing our final league-phase game in Europe for this season.
By the time the referee’s whistle sounds at the end of this one, we’ll know our fate with regards to our next steps in the Europa League — with a packed schedule already, Amorim will undoubtedly be hoping the outcome is automatic passage to knockout stage.
Depending how the Rangers game goes the week prior, we may have the chance to end this segment of the competition unbeaten, a record that would not only aid our bid for progression to the next stage, but would also build confidence for the remainder of the competition and the rest of the season.
