United’s former fan favourite’s fall highlighted as damning number of supporters want him axed – The Athletic

According to a survey by The Athletic, Manchester United fans want to sell Marcus Rashford more than any other player at the club.

After a horrible season which saw United finish 15th in the league and go trophyless, it is safe to say many fans are not too enamoured with the current group of players.

Resultingly, Ruben Amorim is keen to bring in his own reinforcements this summer with Matheus Cunha already being announced and a deal for Bryan Mbeumo edging forward.

To continue Amorim’s squad rebuild, United will need to sell to raise funds and also trim a bloated squad with no European football on the menu next season.

In a survey of “self-described Manchester United fans from June 2-3, 2025”, the American outlet sought to find out which player the Red Devils would prefer to sell this summer.

In the clear lead, 38.5% of fans stated that they want to get rid of former fan favourite, Marcus Rashford.

His story at the club is one of regret as he is a local lad who came from the academy and sparkled as recently as the 2022/2023 season, scoring 30 goals in all competitions.

He struggled to replicate such form in 2023/2024 and quickly fell out with Ruben Amorim before being loaned out to Aston Villa in January.

The forward has been strongly linked to a switch to FC Barcelona and it seems a significant number of United fans would be happy with that outcome.

The results also highlighted that 21.4% of supporters would be pushing for the exit of luckless striker Rasmus Hojlund.

The Dane only found the net four times in the Premier League and many fans are keen to bolster the squad with a significantly more prolific striker like Viktor Gyokeres. The Red Devils may be in luck as Inter Milan have recently expressed interest in doing a deal for the striker.

The next player on the list is Alejandro Garnacho, who 18.1% of fans would be open to selling. Garnacho has been an integral part of the team over the last two seasons. Nonetheless, he struggled for long periods last season, regularly missing huge chances in matches that would later prove pivotal.

What’s more, the forward has been placed on the chopping block after making disparaging comments about Amorim and the team after the Europa League final defeat last month.

The Argentine looks a guaranteed exit this summer with SSC Napoli being the club most frequently linked to a move, having had interest in January.

More results show that 13.6% of fans would favour Casemiro’s departure and a surprising 3.4% of supporters would have been happy with a sale of Bruno Fernandes. Nonetheless, the Portuguese captain has since rejected a big money move to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

Fans were also asked about which loan player they would like to see return to the United first team and a huge 64% stated they do not want to see any of Rashford, Antony or Jadon Sancho back in the famous red shirt.

24% stated they would like to see Rashford with only 9% stating the same for Antony, who had a highly successful loan spell with Real Betis. Not surprisingly, only 3% of surveyed supporters claimed that they would be satisfied with Sancho returning to the fold.

Alex is a huge Manchester United fan, inspired by greats of his homeland such as George Best, Harry Gregg and Norman Whiteside. Proud owner of such niche shirts such as Kleberson, Eric Djemba-Djemba and Gary Neville. Grew up pretending to be Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the back garden, with little success.
