Harry Amass is primed to join Sheffield Wednesday on loan with the Manchester United youngster just waiting for approval from the English Football League to complete the switch.

Medical and contract complete

The BBC reveals Amass, 18, has “known since the start of pre-season” he would be leaving Old Trafford in search of more first-team opportunities after it was agreed with the club’s executive branch a loan move was the correct step for his continued development.

The left-back established himself as a part of Ruben Amorim’s squad in the second half of last season, playing in four of United’s final seven Premier League games and making the bench for the Europa League final.

Amass’ is still growing with the youngster often outmatched physically against older players, but his technical quality is unquestioned, drawing comparisons to teammate Luke Shaw such is his ability with the ball and excellent first touch.

The arrival of Patrick Dorgu from Lecce in January and Diego Leon from Cerro Porteno earlier this summer – two young left-sided defenders, but ones with outstanding physical attributes – further reduced the prospect of first-team opportunities for Amass this season.

A loan move to the Championship, a league with similar levels of physicality and intensity to the Premier League, is the ideal next step for a young defender.

Sheffield Wednesday have been carefully selected as Amass’ new home with Ruben Selles’ squad needing a new left-back.

The BBC reports “all the details” for Amass to join the Owls have been completed, including a medical, and there is only one hurdle left holding up a deal.

Trouble at Hillsborough

Due to Wednesday’s ongoing financial difficulties, the south Yorkshire side require the EFL’s approval on signing players.

This remains true even in cases where the club loaning the player agree to cover the entirety of the wages, as United have agreed for Amass.

Once the EFL have given their sign off to the move, Amass will officially become a Sheffield Wednesday player for the remainder of the 2025/26 campaign.

The Owls are currently second bottom in the Championship table but beat Leeds United in the second round of the Carabao Cup to set up a third round clash with Grimsby Town – the League Two side who knocked United out last week on penalties in humiliating fashion.
