United Women ease past Leicester 2-0 to seize control of race for CL places

Manchester United Women travelled to Leicester City seeking to strengthen their hold on second place in the Women’s Super League. First half The Red Devils started well, but it was the home side who created the first chance of the match. Former United star Rachel Williams had an effort from outside the box, but it was well stopped by Phallon Tullis-Joyce in the United goal. Julia Olme had waited some time for her first United goal, but after recently scoring against Aston Villa and Burnley, she once again found the net for her third strike of the calendar year. Her cross was almost turned in by Lea Schuller, but it evaded everyone and crept into the goal. The hero last time out against Liverpool, Lisa Naalsund, had an effort, but it was well blocked by the Foxes’ defence. On the cusp of half-time, the Swede Hanna Lundkvist almost opened her goalscoring account in the league, but her header from a corner drifted over. The half-time whistle blew with United in control of the game. Second half Leicester started better, and Williams’ header looped into the arms of Tullis-Joyce. The game ebbed and flowed, and United almost grabbed their second, but Elisabeth Terland’s header from a corner went over the bar when she probably should have done better. Olivia Clark in the home side’s goal had to be sharp just moments later, getting down well to block Simi Awujo’s half-volleyed effort. Leicester continued to stay in the game, but Marc Skinner’s side managed to keep them at bay. Finally, United managed to kill the game off after 88 minutes through Elisabeth Terland. She showed great footwork to beat a couple of defenders and found the bottom corner with an excellent finish. The Red Devils saw out the game and will now look forward to a huge match against Atletico Madrid on Thursday in the Champions League.
