Tonight will see Manchester United host Wolverhampton Wanderers in a clash that Ruben Amorim will hope to walk away from with a full three points. Having already defeated Wolves 4-1 in the reverse fixture earlier this month, Man United will be aiming to repeat this feat, particularly as they chase European football. Currently in sixth place, anything but a win will be a disappointment for United, especially since their opponents have only scored two points in the Premier League all season, almost half of the campaign already over. While this should be a straightforward job for Amorim’s men, there are some important considerations they will need to pay attention to in order to avoid any unwelcome surprises. Remain open-minded As mentioned in the previous tactical analysis ahead of the Newcastle game, versatility was going to be key for United, given that they were severely understaffed. With AFCON in full swing and several players unavailable through injury, United needed to ensure that they made use of versatile players who are able to play in a variety of positions. Clearly, Amorim did this against Newcastle, given how he shifted his team to a back four as they held on for a 1-0 victory. Given that Mason Mount is a doubt for tonight’s match and Bruno Fernandes remains unavailable, some further versatility may be needed when United take to the pitch against Wolves. No matter what the final lineup looks like, Amorim must remain open-minded and receptive to change. Should his initial team selection or formation prove ineffective, then he should look to change things up in search of the desired result. Test Wolves from all directions Conceding 11 goals in their last five matches, Wolves are leaking at the back. What is important to note is that Wolves have been conceding goals from all angles and distances. In their 2-1 loss to Liverpool, both goals that they let in were from inside the box. When playing against Brentford, they conceded from slightly further out, albeit within the box. Against Arsenal, Wolves scored two own goals to seal a 2-1 loss. Ultimately, the one area where Wolves have been consistent is that they haven’t conceded goals from outside the box in December. Still, the goals they have conceded have come from all angles, and so United should show their usual attacking creativity to test the Wolves’ defence in different ways in search of a breakthrough. Conceding 39 goals in just 18 matches, Wolves are ripe for the plucking. If United produce a convincing performance as they’ve done over the past few weeks, they should make quick work of the relegation-bound visitors.
