Manchester United will look to bolster their squad significantly this summer, in spite of a strong season in the league. Midfield links Despite all but securing third place in the league, Manchester United are expected to completely overhaul their midfield. They have been linked to the likes of Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, Carlos Baleba and Joao Gomes in the Premier League. Ederson at Atalanta has also been a name often connected to the club over recent years. Mateus Fernandes Manchester United have also been regularly linked to West Ham United’s Fernandes. It has been reported that Manchester United are ahead in the race for the Portugal star, and the chances of a deal being done would only increase were the Hammers to be relegated. Some reports have suggested that the Red Devils may need to pay a price of up to £60 million to land the 21-year-old. Fernandes has enjoyed a successful individual season despite his side’s plight, scoring five goals and providing three assists for the Hammers. Cristiano Ronaldo praise In an exciting twist for Manchester United fans, Fernandes has hinted that he has a special place in his heart for the club. When asked by the Premier League’s YouTube channel which era he would like to travel back to play, he answered, “Cristiano in Manchester. United were unbelievable at that time and Cristiano was amazing.” Cristiano Ronaldo spent his first spell at Old Trafford between 2003 and 2009, where the Red Devils won three Premier League trophies. Manchester United fans would certainly love to see Mateus Fernandes repeat the trick at Old Trafford in the coming season as the club impatiently waits for their 21st league title.
